The reason I thought you might not be serious is because it sounds like a neoliberal democrat's campaign speech, defending the current wealth transfer system because someone you don't like is taking a sledgehammer to it.

I'm all aboard with the Trump bashing, not so much the Free World free trade rah rah. You make it sound like free trade is all good all the time and not something that in its current incarnation encourages a race to the bottom where profit rules supreme.

A small part of me is cheering inside because Trump is helping accelerate the decline of the American empire, forcing Europe to grow a spine and stop being a US lapdog, while another part is worried because Trump is helping accelerate the rise of the Chinese empire.

I think the current free trade system is flawed and in need of reform, but I also think what Trump is doing is stupid. It's not a black and white situation.

I also have a thing about the term "Free World", as it is a bullshit propaganda construct from the cold war, and pretty damn condescending to anyone who happen to not be part of it. It's American exceptionalism writ large. Capitalizing it just makes it even more grating.

Thanks for clarifying your objections and your opinion, DrEvil.

I’m actually not a fan of the current wealth transfer system as it leaves too many desperate countries and their populations out of the most beneficial exchanges. Profit ruthlessly overpowers human need in global resource sharing systems. It has to be balanced with humanitarianism.

Trump is accelerating the decline of the American empire, much like a fiddling Nero fixated on his mirror and his own egocentric muse and music accompanying the collapse his orchestrations also caused.

Trump is boosting the rise of the Chinese empire as his former economic allies will seek to fill the US trade voids with other world powers offering offsetting scale.

Trump is essentially too stupid to understand the economic consequence of his incompetent grandstanding. You don’t betray allies without retaliation and ongoing distrust of any future “deals” with you. Such “protectionism” results in greater isolation in more than just economic terms. Even friends don’t suffer fools for long.

The Canadian Prime Minister has already announced retaliation measures in concert with similar actions by Mexico, the European Union and even Japan. The spine has international support – and will instigate internal US opposition as well.

Don’t sweat the “Free World” term’s reactivation as American exceptionalism is also quickly becoming a thing of the past under “The Art of the Deal” Trump.

Thanks for the more nuanced reply. Looks like we pretty much agree, especially on Trump. The way he is wasting what little goodwill and trust the US had left is depressing. No one will ever trust the US to keep its word again. Even if they elect a saner president after him there's always the possibility that the one after that is another crazy-person.

I don't think the US will recover unless they somehow manage to marginalize the republican party and the religious right, reform their electoral system into something more pluralistic and get money out of elections.

Minds like your own should prevail if acumen counts in civilized progress.

Fortunately, the relentless growth of multicultural ethnicities in the voting population of the US will inevitably outnumber privileged Caucasians, bigots and religious fundamentalists at the polls and thus diminish the clout of most of Trump’s less educated and more gullible red neck base. By reducing excessive campaign donations by the wealthier corporations and capitalists the distorting propaganda pitches will also be less pervasive and the Republican voice will decrease in strength and impact. Maybe then some sanity will return to presidential selection.

But don’t count on it.

The entertainment industry has conditioned the American population to seek out folk heroes and rebels who appeal to the common man as saviors from the Enemy Establishment, so that accomplished actors and con artists and grifters can still rise to the peak power positions with artificially contrived public performances and publicity. Much like the tyrants of history, riding a wave of patriotic prejudice into power still works, especially amongst the uninformed and vulnerable voting masses. Entertainment fiction has become election reality in the USA.

OMG!!

Unfortunately, I kinda concur with your concise description of our radical pres’dent’s administration, and it seems to me that the USA’s ridiculous record of waging war everywhere is wearing real thin around the world; but rather than focusing on the “Little Fuhrer’s” remarkable marketing campaign strategy to “Make America Great Again”, I see our turmoil more in terms of mostly purposeful propaganda from the financial system that strategically stuck the sh!tass in office, and it seems to me these ’disastrous blunders’ were specifically designed and advertised to psychologically wreck our society, while the world is already asymmetrically whacking our ass in a twenty-first century World War Won...e!

Trump: A Mafia Don with a Pompadour
    by F. WILLIAM ENGDAHL

Every four years Americans get to vote for a President. The last President who might have made a positive difference to the country and the world was John F. Kennedy. Just before his assassination, JFK was moving to disengage from Vietnam. He was in a back-channel dialogue with Soviet head Nikita Khrushchev to insure a repeat of the 1962 Cuba Missile Crisis, a near-nuclear war by miscalculation, would never happen (bad for US military-industrial complex and the Rockefellers among others). In short, he was starting to deviate from The Program.

JFK as we all know was assassinated on November 22, 1963 at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. His assassins included networks of Allen Dulles’ CIA, including a then-young CIA agent named G.H.W. Bush; elements of the Mafia around New Orleans mafia boss Carlos Marcello; elements of the Dallas Police; mafia-CIA-linked gangster night club owner, Jack Ruby; Texan political boss, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson; networks of the Pentagon. The only one who was innocent was the one Ruby rubbed out to silence him: Lee Harvey Oswald.

That was fifty three years ago. I was in Dallas the day Kennedy was shot. The TV scenes are burned in my memory as national trauma like with most Americans back then.

Since then the United States of America, the land of the free and home of the brave, has gradually become a nation of confused, angry, lost souls who no longer know why we should exist as a nation. We’ve lost sight of what happened to our moral purpose so beautifully described in the documents of our founding fathers at the end of the 18th Century. All we do with our rage, frustration and growing feeling of impotence as a people is to project that rage on the world in the form of making wars, wars, wars everywhere–Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, wars on our border to Mexico, wars in our cities, and on and on. We don’t even bother to know for what moral purpose the war anymore. We long ago dispensed with the moral open protests that were so prevalent during the 1960’s and 1970’s during the Vietnam War.

JFK was followed as President by LBJ, a war criminal and far worse. LBJ was followed by “Tricky Dick” Nixon, a Republican with a dirty past who was Watergated by Henry Kissinger and the Rockefeller clan. Then came Nixon’s Vice President, Gerald Ford. One of the few things I could agree on with LBJ was his comment that Ford, whom Johnson knew from his Senate days, “couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time.” That was quite OK for those who put him in power. Brains and independent thinking like JFK were not desired in “their” Presidents. Nelson Rockefeller was Ford’s Vice President was was there to do the walking and gum-chewing for Ford.

When the nation got sick of Republican Ford they voted in a Democrat, Georgia born-again peanut farmer governor named Jimmy Carter. What Americans didn’t know was that every major cabinet post of Carter, including Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, was given to Carter by a very secretive private club set up by David Rockefeller and Brzezinski in 1973 to control globalization policies in North America, Europe and Japan. It was accordingly named the Trilateral Commission.

Carter Administration members of the select Rockefeller Trilateral Commission included, in addition to Carter and Brzezinski, Walter F. Mondale (Vice President); Cyrus Vance (Secretary of State, nephew of John W. Davis, of the J. P. Morgan bank who was first President of the CFR); W. Michael Blumenthal (Secretary of Treasury); Harold Brown (Secretary of Defense); Andrew Young (Ambassador to the United Nations); Paul A. Volcker, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

David Rockefeller’s Carter Presidency was followed by Republican Ronald Reagan, a B-grade Hollywood actor, with George H.W. Bush as Vice President in every sense of the word “vice,” running Reagan’s misnamed War on Drugs as well as the criminal enterprise later known as Iran-Contra. Bush, ex-CIA chief, ran most of Reagan’s Presidency until he stepped in 1988 for his long-sought goal to run and ruin the country.

Then came “Bubba,” Bill Clinton, aptly described by Mafia boss, John Gotti, as “that Arkansas white trailer-park trash,” a President who apparently believed that rape was a prerogative of political office. Clinton, who was intimate family friends with the Bushes before their 1992 election, was a former Arkansas Governor who as State Attorney General, willingly turned a blind eye to CIA cocaine aircraft via Mena Arkansas airport in exchange for desk-loads of $100 bill payoffs according to witnesses. Bill Clinton’s Presidency witnessed the most cabinet officials to come under criminal investigation of any US President. Clinton “baby sat” the Oval Office until the Bush clan could manipulate the 2000 election via an unconstitutional decision by the US Supreme Court enabling George W. Bush to become President with Vice President Dick Cheney running most of the show.

When the 2007-2008 financial crisis exploded Americans’ real estate bubble dreams, and the Afghan and Iraq wars proved utter fiasco, most Americans became desperate for “change.” What they got was a Hollywood fiction, in form of a protégé of the CIA, the first black President of the United States, Barack Obama. Behind the curtains, the very same circles of Wall Street banks, military-industry and agribusiness firms like Monsanto ran Obama, another war-making disaster for America.

Now again Americans are being asked to vote for a new President. As it stands in mid-March 2016, it will be a race between Clinton’s putative wife, Hillary Clinton, on the Democrat side running against Donald Trump, a circus clown worthy as some have suggested, of a remake of the hilarious 1967 Mel Brooks comedy, The Producers, with Trump, with his signal Pompadour hairdo, playing the role of scheming, manipulative failed Broadway producer, Zero Mostel as Max Bialystock.

Mafia Don’s Murky Past

Presidential candidate Trump prefers the grandiose titular name, The Donald. In reality, to be honest to his background, it should be The Mafia Don as in Don Coreleone in the movie The Godfather. Trump’s past is so intertwined with organized crime it’s incredible that the hand-wringing GOP anti-Trump establishment or Hillary Clinton have not smeared it across every newspaper in America.

Trump was born just after the end of World War II in Jamaica Queens, New York some seventy years ago. He was son of Fred Trump, a major New York real estate and construction developer. It was well known to every taxi driver or bar owner that for anyone to be a success in New York construction he had to be on friendly terms with the mob, then and today. Just like those who run the garbage disposal businesses, or control the harbors. Fred Trump’s son Don left business school to join daddy Fred’s construction and real estate business in New York City.

Trump’s early mentor in the ways of doing slick, shady construction business in New York was one of the sleaziest characters in New York, a lawyer named Roy Cohn.

Cohn, once lawyer for the sleazy US Senator Joe McCarthy, reportedly shaped McCarthy’s insane paranoid campaign against unnamed communists in the State Department in the early 1950s. Cohn’s biographer, Nicholas von Hoffman, noted that Cohn “lived in a matrix of crime and unethical conduct…derived a significant part of his income from illegal or unethical schemes and conspiracies.” His ties to the mob were so close that he allowed top Mafia bosses like Frank Costello to hold their meetings in his law office so they could claim lawyer-client immunity privilege.

Cohn, who was pronounced dead of AIDS in 1986 and was described by Hoffman as, “the best-known non-show-business homosexual in the country,” was the attorney for a notorious cocaine-snorting Manhattan nightclub in the late 1970’s called Studio 54.

Hoffman wrote of the orgies at Studio 54 held by Cohn, “For special celebrities, the wildest parties were held in the basement…with high society’s homosexuals, transsexuals and transvestites…” Cohn held some of his biggest birthday bangs, attended on at least one occasion by, “the important officials of the Democratic, Republican, and Conservative parties, most of the city’s major elected officials, a number of Congressmen, the Chief Judge of the United States District Court and Roy’s usuals…Donald Trump.”

Donald Trump, organized crime lawyer, Roy Cohn, and cocaine orgies in the basement of Studio 54 attended by judges and politicians of every party? In an interview Trump even described one such Studio 54 orgy he attended: “I would watch supermodels getting screwed, well-known supermodels getting screwed, on a bench in the middle of the room. There were seven of them and each one was getting screwed by a different guy. This was in the middle of the room.” He omitted to say whether he was among that seven.

In the 1970’s when Trump was in his 20’s he hired Roy Cohn as his attorney and “fixer” as he took over his father’s New York real estate and construction business. Trump and Cohn were regular companions at Studio 54 where Cohn was the lawyer. Trump reportedly even kept a photo of Cohn in his office.

In 1979, Cohn introduced Trump to a political dirty-tricks specialist named Roger Stone. Trump and Stone remain close to the present day. Stone, who has worked with Trump on campaigns since 1987, including the present Presidential bid, was charged and fined along with Trump for illegally breaking campaign rules as they fought the development of Indian casinos, competition for Trump’s Atlantic City casinos. Stone’s advice to Trump and other clients was, “Admit nothing, deny everything, launch counterattack….When somebody screws you, screw ‘em back—but a lot harder.” Trump learned Stone’s method well. In 2015 Trump again hired Stone for managing his GOP Presidential bid, but reportedly fired him in August, 2015 for taking too much credit for Trump’s growing success. The Don likes to take all credit. He is, after all, grandiose.

The Don’s mob pals

Mentored since his 20’s by New York mob attorney, Roy Cohn, The Don ever since has been involved with mob or mafia figures. Characteristically, as befits a protegé of Roy Cohn, Trump always denies knowing they were mob figures.

Don Trump entered the world of casino gambling in 1987. Casinos have invariably been associated with laundering money, criminal money of the mob, of the CIA for covert operations like Iran-Contra—taking dirty money and making it “clean,” untraceable. Las Vegas was created by Meyer Lansky, the late head of what was called during Prohibition “Murder Inc.” Lansky ran the casinos of pre-Castro Cuba until the Cuban Revolution in 1959 kicked him and his casinos out. In 1987, a year after his mentor and close friend Roy Cohn died of AIDS, Trump bought 93% control of a dubious casino company in the Bahamas called Resorts International.

Resorts International evolved from a CIA money-laundering front company set up by CIA chief Allen Dulles in the 1950’s. It was called the harmless-sounding name Mary Carter Paint Company. It later merged with help of CIA funds, with Jim Crosby’s Crosby-Miller Corporation. The name was changed to Resorts International in 1968 and it ran casinos in the Caribbean. In 1963, Alvin I. Malnik, a top henchman of crime boss Meyer Lansky, was deeply involved with Mary Carter/Resorts. Resorts International financed a New Jersey referendum that made casino gambling legal in one city in the state-Atlantic City.

Jim Crosby, an alleged CIA front man who later founded a private security company called Intertel whose clients numbered the late Shah of Iran and late Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza, then died. His family sold the 93% control of Resorts International to…The Don, Donald Trump, in March 1987. Casinos in Atlantic City were the result of a decision years earlier at a mob meeting in Acapulco of the Meyer Lansky Syndicate to expand operations outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Resorts International, then one of the most successful casino operations, was used to do it. Trump entered that charmed world in 1987.

In 1991 Trump and his Atlantic City Trump Plaza casino came into trouble with the New Jersey Casino Control Commission about his dealings with Robert LiButti, a high-rolling gambler and horse breeder who was later banned from Atlantic City for his ties to mob boss, John Gotti. When asked about the LiButti tie, Trump retorted, as he always does, that he “couldn’t recall” the name. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer when questioned about his relation to LiButti, “I have heard he is a high roller, but if he was standing here in front of me, I wouldn’t know what he looked like.” The only problem is that LiButti’s daughter, Edith Creamer, LiButti’s daughter, told Yahoo News that Trump’s account was false. “He’s a liar,” said Creamer. “Of course he knew him. I flew in the [Trump] helicopter with [Trump’s then wife] Ivana and the kids. My dad flew it up and down [to Atlantic City]. My 35th birthday party was at the Plaza and Donald was there. After the party, we went on his boat, his big yacht. I like Trump, but it pisses me off that he denies knowing my father.

In 2010, The Don appointed Felix H. Sater aka Satter, an executive at Bayrock Group LLC, to be Trump’s “senior business adviser,” with an office next to Trump’s and Trump business cards. Sater’s Bayrock had partnered with Trump on the Trump Soho high-rise hotel in Manhattan and other branded luxury real estate deals. Sater had pleaded guilty in 1998 to racketeering for his role in a $40 million stock fraud scheme involving the Genovese and Bonanno crime families. When an AP reporter questioned Trump about Sater in December, 2015, The Don replied his usual, “Felix Sater, boy, I have to even think about it. I’m not that familiar with him.” A spokesman for the Trump Organization acknowledged publicly that Sater worked for Trump after the disclosures of Sater’s criminal background. Sater is a Russian émigré who emigrated to Brooklyn in 1974.

American success story?

Trump has become a political phenomenon and popular among frustrated Americans fed up with lying Washington politicians. He wins traditional Democratic labor union support for attacking Obama’s Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal for robbing more American jobs. He wins support from confused angry unemployed or underemployed voters when he pledges to build a wall on the Mexican border to keep illegal refugees out, calling them drug dealers and criminals. Similarly, he garners support from the so-called “silent majority” when he proposes, quite against the US Constitution, to ban any and all Muslims from entering the United States.

The Don has someone behind the scenes, perhaps old crony Roger Stone, giving him very savvy advice on the “hot button” issues on voters’ minds and panders to that, as any skilled demagogue would. He does it in sound bytes. He spells out no coherent program to rebuild America or to deal with a nation in existential crisis other than to proclaim he could “sit down with Putin” and work a deal. About what, he never says.

Trump’s campaign website proclaims the now familiar mantra, “Trump is the very definition of the American success story, continually setting the standards of excellence in business, real estate and entertainment.”

What he chooses not to play up is that he has repeatedly declared bankruptcy on his casinos then, suspiciously, coming out of bankruptcy smelling like the proverbial rose. Trump’s hotel and casino businesses have declared bankruptcy five times between 1991 and 2014. Because the businesses used Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they were allowed to operate while the owners attempted to settle accounts with investors through asset sales and debt cancellation.

According to a report by Forbes in 2011, the first four bankruptcies were the result of over-leveraged hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City: Trump’s Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza Hotel, Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, and Trump Entertainment Resorts. Boasting, Trump said “I’ve used the laws of this country to pare debt. … We’ll have the company. We’ll throw it into a chapter. We’ll negotiate with the banks. We’ll make a fantastic deal. You know, it’s like on The Apprentice. It’s not personal. It’s just business.”

There are two possible conclusions to draw from the above documents of a fifty some year history of businessman Don Trump and a myriad gaggle of business associates who are tied to the mob. Either it is true, as he says again and again, that he was unaware of their mob ties and worked with them for superior their business skills. In that case, with fifty years of such abysmal lack of elementary due diligence in checking backgrounds of those he works with in the most sensitive positions, Don Trump is demonstrably not qualified, on national security grounds, to even be White House gardener.

On the other hand, if the ties are with knowledge and clear intent, from Roy Cohn to those of the last several years, Don Trump then is a narcissistic pathetic real estate and casino gangster who ought never to step near the most powerful office on Earth.

JUN 19, 2018
Trump’s Military Drops a Bomb Every 12 Minutes, and No One Is Talking About It

You’re thinking of a rational world. We do not live there.

Instead, we live in a world where the Pentagon is completely and utterly out of control. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the $21 trillion (that’s not a typo) that has gone unaccounted for at the Pentagon. But I didn’t get into the number of bombs that ridiculous amount of money buys us. President George W. Bush’s military dropped 70,000 bombs on five countries. But of that outrageous number, only 57 of those bombs really upset the international community.

Because there were 57 strikes in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen—countries the U.S. was neither at war with nor had ongoing conflicts with. And the world was kind of horrified. There was a lot of talk that went something like, “Wait a second. We’re bombing in countries outside of war zones? Is it possible that’s a slippery slope ending in us just bombing all the goddamn time? (Awkward pause.) … Nah. Whichever president follows Bush will be a normal adult person (with a functional brain stem of some sort) and will therefore stop this madness.”

We were so cute and naive back then, like a kitten when it’s first waking up in the morning.

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported that under President Barack Obama there were “563 strikes, largely by drones, that targeted Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. …”

It’s not just the fact that bombing outside of a war zone is a horrific violation of international law and global norms. It’s also the morally reprehensible targeting of people for pre-crime, which is what we’re doing and what the Tom Cruise movie “Minority Report” warned us about. (Humans are very bad at taking the advice of sci-fi dystopias. If we’d listened to “1984,” we wouldn’t have allowed the existence of the National Security Agency. If we listened to “The Terminator,” we wouldn’t have allowed the existence of drone warfare. And if we’d listened to “The Matrix,” we wouldn’t have allowed the vast majority of humans to get lost in a virtual reality of spectacle and vapid nonsense while the oceans die in a swamp of plastic waste. … But you know, who’s counting?)

There was basically a media blackout while Obama was president. You could count on one hand the number of mainstream media reports on the Pentagon’s daily bombing campaigns under Obama. And even when the media did mention it, the underlying sentiment was, “Yeah, but look at how suave Obama is while he’s OK’ing endless destruction. He’s like the Steve McQueen of aerial death.”

And let’s take a moment to wipe away the idea that our “advanced weaponry” hits only the bad guys. As David DeGraw put it, “According to the C.I.A.’s own documents, the people on the ‘kill list,’ who were targeted for ‘death-by-drone,’ accounted for only 2% of the deaths caused by the drone strikes.”

Two percent. Really, Pentagon? You got a two on the test? You get five points just for spelling your name right.

But those 70,000 bombs dropped by Bush—it was child’s play. DeGraw again: “[Obama] dropped 100,000 bombs in seven countries. He out-bombed Bush by 30,000 bombs and 2 countries.”

You have to admit that’s impressively horrific. That puts Obama in a very elite group of Nobel Peace Prize winners who have killed that many innocent civilians. The reunions are mainly just him and Henry Kissinger wearing little hand-drawn name tags and munching on deviled eggs.

However, we now know that Donald Trump’s administration puts all previous presidents to shame. The Pentagon’s numbers show that during George W. Bush’s eight years he averaged 24 bombs dropped per day, which is 8,750 per year. Over the course of Obama’s time in office, his military dropped 34 bombs per day, 12,500 per year. And in Trump’s first year in office, he averaged 121 bombs dropped per day, for an annual total of 44,096.

Trump’s military dropped 44,000 bombs in his first year in office.

He has basically taken the gloves off the Pentagon, taken the leash off an already rabid dog. So the end result is a military that’s behaving like Lil Wayne crossed with Conor McGregor. You look away for one minute, look back, and are like, “What the fuck did you just do? I was gone for like, a second!”

Under Trump, five bombs are dropped per hour—every hour of every day. That averages out to a bomb every 12 minutes.

And which is more outrageous—the crazy amount of death and destruction we are creating around the world, or the fact that your mainstream corporate media basically NEVER investigates it? They talk about Trump’s flaws. They say he’s a racist, bulbous-headed, self-centered idiot (which is totally accurate)—but they don’t criticize the perpetual Amityville massacre our military perpetrates by dropping a bomb every 12 minutes, most of them killing 98 percent non-targets.

When you have a Department of War with a completely unaccountable budget—as we saw with the $21 trillion—and you have a president with no interest in overseeing how much death the Department of War is responsible for, then you end up dropping so many bombs that the Pentagon has reported we are running out of bombs.

Oh, dear God. If we run out of our bombs, then how will we stop all those innocent civilians from … farming? Think of all the goats that will be allowed to go about their days.

And, as with the $21 trillion, the theme seems to be “unaccountable.”

Journalist Witney Webb wrote in February, “Shockingly, more than 80 percent of those killed have never even been identified and the C.I.A.’s own documents have shown that they are not even aware of who they are killing—avoiding the issue of reporting civilian deaths simply by naming all those in the strike zone as enemy combatants.”

That’s right. We kill only enemy combatants. How do we know they’re enemy combatants? Because they were in our strike zone. How did we know it was a strike zone? Because there were enemy combatants there. How did we find out they were enemy combatants? Because they were in the strike zone. … Want me to keep going, or do you get the point? I have all day.

This is not about Trump, even though he’s a maniac. It’s not about Obama, even though he’s a war criminal. It’s not about Bush, even though he has the intelligence of boiled cabbage. (I haven’t told a Bush joke in about eight years. Felt kind of good. Maybe I’ll get back into that.)

This is about a runaway military-industrial complex that our ruling elite are more than happy to let loose. Almost no one in Congress or the presidency tries to restrain our 121 bombs a day. Almost no one in a mainstream outlet tries to get people to care about this.

We live in a state of perpetual war, and we never feel it. While you get your gelato at the hip place where they put those cute little mint leaves on the side, someone is being bombed in your name. While you argue with the 17-year-old at the movie theater who gave you a small popcorn when you paid for a large, someone is being obliterated in your name. While we sleep and eat and make love and shield our eyes on a sunny day, someone’s home, family, life and body are being blown into a thousand pieces in our names.

Once every 12 minutes.

The United States military drops an explosive with a strength you can hardly comprehend once every 12 minutes. And that’s odd, because we’re technically at war with—let me think—zero countries. So that should mean zero bombs are being dropped, right?

Hell no! You’ve made the common mistake of confusing our world with some sort of rational, cogent world in which our military-industrial complex is under control, the music industry is based on merit and talent, Legos have gently rounded edges (so when you step on them barefoot, it doesn’t feel like an armor-piercing bullet just shot straight up your sphincter), and humans are dealing with climate change like adults rather than burying our heads in the sand while trying to convince ourselves that the sand around our heads isn’t getting really, really hot.

Today is trump's 666th day in office.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Before Christian Bale became the character of Patrick Bateman in the movie American Psycho (2000, director Mary Harron), there existed the fictional Patrick Bateman in Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 book American Psycho. The Bateman in the novel is obsessed with the businessman and celebrity Donald Trump.

In [the book] American Psycho, [Donald Trump] is the person Patrick Bateman idolizes above all others. Bateman talks about him constantly, citing incredibly specific details of his life of luxury, and is often distracted by the thought of seeing Trump or his wife Ivana out in New York City. Bateman’s obsession often irks Evelyn, who wishes her boyfriend would talk about something other than Trump. Ellis’s inclusion of Trump as an idol in the novel (he never actually appears) grounds the book in a reality of late 1980s Wall Street New York and also shows the obsessive nature of Bateman’s mind. His love for Trump clearly indicates to the reader the things that Bateman values most in another person: wealth, success, extravagance, and beautiful women. Source.

Celebrity Donald Trump has incredibly moved his personality-driven fantasy story tale to the reality of the conspiracy movie that is his present political life.

So I have to ask the question again: What would the late Carl Oglesby (July 30, 1935 – September 13, 2011), the author of The Yankee and Cowboy War, say as which side Donald Trump is on? One thoughtful answer came to me recently.

Despite being from New York, I think Oglesby would rate Trump as pretty firmly on the Cowboys side. Trump is 100% in favor of the oil and gas industry, favoring almost no environmental or other business regulations on that industry and supporting unlimited use of fossil fuels as opposed to alternative energies. Like the oil companies he opposes the climate change treaty.

Oglesby also noted that while the Yankees supported defense, they also favored international alliances and arms treaties. Cowboys favored huge spending on defense and distrusted international alliances. So on that perspective Trump would also fit in more with the Cowboys, as he has increased defense spending a record amount, got us out of international treaties like climate change treaty and Iran nuclear treaty, the TPP, intermediate nuclear arms treaty and has been weary and negative about international agencies and alliances like the UN and NATO.

Trump's announcement of the sudden withdrawal of all US troops that are in Syria would not fit with the Cowboys so much. But that's because I think Trump has his own prior deals and understandings with Turkey and Russia that he gave them the huge gift of abandoning the Kurds to be slaughtered and Russia to claim total victory in Syria and keep their troops there forever.

But overall I think he fits on the Cowboys side. He has continued the JFK cover up, following the request of the CIAA and other intelligence agencies to keep the files suppressed even when the law keeping them secret expired. Source: Andrew Wilkins. December 23, 2018.
Caleb Oglesby wrote (on December 23, 2018) to my Facebook page, and stated: "Andrew Wilkins, I think my dad would concur."

This discussion made me feel comfortable with what I earlier wrote on June 17, 2017: “There seems little doubt we are seeing a Yankees (Yates, Comey, Rosenstein?, Mueller) vs Cowboys (Flynn, Sessions, Trump) battle occurring right before our eyes.”

Funny how the Cowboy allies of Trump seem to have "resigned" or been fired, of late. But others have been recruited.

The Senate Judiciary Committee public hearings, regarding Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination, merely played out this melodrama for the media lights and television cameras.

Michael Carlson writes, in part for The Times Literary Supplement, of  his thoughts on the matter in "Cowboys and Yankees: The forces that led to Trump" (October 31, 2016):

Positioning Trump as a political outlier ignores reality. His candidacy is crashing on a late questioning of his “character”, but character is a bullfighter’s cape, distracting attention from more systemic issues. Trump is far from being an exception, even if you believe exceptions that prove rules. Only eight years ago, for example, John McCain chose Sarah “Going Rogue” Palin as his choice to stand a heartbeat away from the Presidency. The roots of Trump’s success can be traced to America’s post-war transition from the grey flannel 1950s to the 60s.

Politically, Trump is the reductio ad absurdum of half a century’s decline in America’s relative balance. Yes, parts of Trump’s personal history and quirks of his performance are unusual for a candidate for the nation’s highest office. But his candidacy represents the ultimate convergence of two realignments in American politics which have taken fifty years to resolve. The Republican Party has been devolving, and the resolution of this process is Trump.

The internal conflict among Republicans lay between what the American writer Carl Oglesby described as the “Yankees” and the “Cowboys”. Yankees represented old Eastern aristocracy and money, the Wall Street lawyers and investment bankers. They founded the party before the Civil War, partly through a noblesse oblige desire to end slavery. Their ranks were joined by nineteenth-century robber barons who gained respectability through wealth and the adoption of that noblesse oblige. They tended to be internationalists. Cowboys represented new money: independent Texas oilmen, aerospace and defence contractors, gigantic retailers, the rising power of the Far West. They offered little noblesse and no oblige, and advocated American exceptionalism which bordered on isolationism, unless America’s dominant interest dictated otherwise. They included groups such as the John Birch Society, funded by the Coors brewing fortune – right-wingers who considered Dwight Eisenhower a communist.

In 1964, their standard-bearer, Barry Goldwater of Arizona (“extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice”) won the Republican presidential nomination. He was trounced in the election by Lyndon Johnson, and the Yankee-backed Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford regained power within the Party. But by 1980, the Cowboys found a more presentable spokesman. Former television host Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter by running against the Washington establishment, with George H. W. Bush, the son of a Yankee investment banker turned Texas oilman Cowboy, as his vice-president. Since then, opposition to “government” has become the Republicans’ default position. Career politicians run against “Washington insiders”, in pantomime rebellion against the very interests who bankroll them into office and whose needs they service.

The second realignment came from a schism in the Democratic Party, which, at the time Johnson beat Goldwater, was an uneasy alliance of northern working class and “liberals” alongside the so-called Dixiecrats. Dixiecrats represented the “solid South” that for a century had refused to vote Republican, for the simple reason that Abraham Lincoln had won the Civil War and freed the slaves. They were conservatives committed to segregation in the guise of “states’ rights”; many were also born-again Christians.

It was also in 1964 that Johnson enacted the landmark Civil Rights Act. In 1965 he pushed the Voting Rights Act through Congress and as he signed that bill, he remarked presciently “there goes the South”. Four years later Richard Nixon introduced a “southern strategy” to the Republicans, and by 1980, when Reagan defeated Carter, the only southern state Carter captured was his own Georgia.

When the Right and Left were mixed between two parties, the art of compromise was the essence of politics. But now all the hard Right was in one party, and these radical, religious and overwhelmingly white Republicans shared a commitment to ideological purity, exerting extreme pressure on “moderates” to tack firmly to the right or face challenges, funded by unlimited money from backers like the Koch brothers, in the primaries. Co-operation with the Democratic Party became anathema.

Into this maelstrom, Trump’s advantage over his sixteen opponents in the primary was his very lack of a political “paper trail”; he replaced positions with personality. Polls before the first primaries showed that although he commanded less than 30 per cent support, none of the other candidates ran ahead of him one to one. A party united only in its opposition to government failed to offer an attractive leader from within, leaving a vacuum for a would-be demagogue to fill. Once he won the nomination, his campaign attacked blacks and Latinos, and a thrice-married and self-confessed Lothario somehow convinced religious leaders such as Pat Robertson to channel messages of support from God.

Trump benefitted from one other evolution of politics since the 1960s. In 1960 a televised debate helped propel John Kennedy to victory over Richard Nixon. In 1964, a commercial broadcast only once, showing a little girl picking flowers before being obliterated by an atom bomb, killed the Goldwater campaign. Fifty years later Trump realised shrewdly that modern American electioneering is exactly the kind of “reality” television he has been starring in for the past decade. In a system dependent on hundreds of millions of dollars to fund television adverts, Trump’s celebrity and outlandish behaviour guaranteed him a fortune’s worth of free exposure. As one network chief said, “he’s horrible for America, but he’s great for us”. This proved a boon until the focus narrowed into a head to head battle, and the spotlight began to show Nixonian sweat beneath the makeup.

We already known that the personality of Donald Trump has been seeded into our culture for decades. Trump has inspired several movie characters.

Gordon Gekko from the Wall Street films.

Yet it is amazing there has not been more analysis of where Trump cryptopolitically resides in the Yankees vs Cowboys landscape.

Let us not worry about 2020 yet. We have 2019 to live through first, in a script that seems to have unfolded at the movies.

Trump promotes model's fringe 'Jexodus' campaign encouraging Jews to leave Democratic Party
Dale Stableford, Yahoo News - March 12, 2019

President Trump on Tuesday kept up his campaign to turn Jewish voters away from the Democratic Party, tweeting support for an organization founded only a week ago called “Jexodus.”

Trump’s tweet quoted its spokesperson, Elizabeth Pipko, a 23-year-old model turned activist and former Trump campaign staffer.

Pipko appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday morning.

“‘Jewish people are leaving the Democratic Party,’” Trump tweeted, quoting Pipko. “‘We saw a lot of anti Israel policies start under the Obama Administration, and it got worsts & worse. There is anti-Semitism in the Democratic Party. They don’t care about Israel or the Jewish people.’”

Trump’s sister quietly retired in February, and it’s actually a really big deal

A key hint in the question of whether the president evaded taxes.

By Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesiasmatt@vox.com Apr 11, 2019, 3:00pm EDT

The retirement of a federal appeals court judge is normally not a huge national news story, and while the fact that Maryanne Trump Barry is the sister of the president of the United States makes her decision a bit more noteworthy, on its face, you can still see why it’s been treated as relatively minor news.

But peer a little bit deeper and the reason Barry is stepping down makes it clear that the story is a very big deal indeed.

The key is that last fall, the New York Times published a bombshell investigation of Donald and Maryanne Trump’s father Fred Trump’s finances that appeared to reveal, among other things, that he illegally evaded taxes in transferring much of his wealth to his children — including both Donald and Maryanne.

All this happened a long time ago, and the statute of limitations would have expired on any possible crimes. But some shrewd people noted that there is no statute of limitations on judicial ethics investigations and filed a complaint against not Donald Trump but Maryanne. This would have launched an investigation of her that would, were she found guilty of wrongdoing, have implicated the president as well.

Now, according to Russ Buettner and Susan Craig of the New York Times, Barry has retired, which renders the investigation moot. Their reporting indicates that this all actually happened in February. The complaint was filed in October, and then on February 1, a court official notified the people who filed the complaint that it was “receiving the full attention” of investigators. Ten days later, Barry filed her paperwork to resign.

And it certainly raises questions of whether she and her brother might have something to hide.

The Trump family’s shady schemes

A lot of what the Trump family did to pass on wealth tax-free to the next generations falls pretty clearly under the heading of “the real scandal is what’s legal.” But some of the Trump family shenanigans uncovered by the Times have a look of actual criminality to them.

RELATED
Did the Trump family’s tax practices break the law? An expert explains.

The most striking of these, to my eye, began in 1992. The Trump kids, including Donald and Maryanne, were set up as the owners of a company called All County Building Supply & Maintenance. All County then sold boilers, refrigerators, cleaning supplies, and other equipment at unusually high prices to buildings owned by Fred Trump. On its face, this looks a lot like an illegal effort to evade gift and estate tax by masking it as a business transaction. What’s more, Fred Trump then compounded the offense because the buildings in question were rent-regulated and he cited the high prices paid as legal justification for rent increases.

This is one of several schemes the court ethics panel was in a position to look at, but now the investigation is off.

There’s a big political fight over Trump’s tax returns

This all makes for extremely relevant context as the Trump administration continues to defy legally valid requests from congressional Democrats to see his tax returns.

There has been, for years, considerable speculation around what Trump might be hiding in those returns. Guesses range from fairly wild conspiracy theories that link the tax questions to the Russia investigation and other dark plots to the apparent GOP consensus that Trump is just being touchy about something basically innocuous, like he’s maybe not as rich as he says or that, thanks to loopholes, he pays a very low effective rate.

But a possibility raised by the Times’s examination of Fred Trump’s returns is that examining his son’s returns would, likewise, reveal tax evasion.

Fred Trump evidently managed to slip these shenanigans past the investigators at the IRS, and in more recent years, the IRS enforcement budget has been cut to the bone. It makes a lot of sense for a wealthy and unscrupulous person to take a calculated risk and just break the rules. But if those returns were to be disclosed today, they would obviously attract a ton of attention from the media and various outside experts, and Maryanne Trump wouldn’t be able to avoid accountability by quietly retiring.
