He Was an FBI Informant—and Inspired a Generation of Violent Extremists
Joshua Caleb Sutter infiltrated far-right extremist organizations as a confidential FBI informant, all while promoting hateful ideologies that influenced some of the internet's most violent groups.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a long and checkered history of letting confidential informants run wild. Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger famously used his protected status to knock off New England underworld rivals. COINTELPRO-era provocateur Gary Thomas Rowe Jr. was involved in multiple civil rights atrocities. To catch criminals and extremists, you have to play dirty.
Joshua Caleb Sutter firmly fits into this framework. A longtime occultist and neo-Nazi, Sutter became an FBI informant roughly 20 years ago after being sent to prison for trying to buy a silencer and a defaced Glock .40 pistol from an undercover fed in Philadelphia. At the time of his arrest, Sutter was living on an Aryan Nations compound in Pennsylvania. Since then, he’s earned at least $140,000 infiltrating a range of far-right organizations, most notoriously the Atomwaffen Division (AWD) starting in 2017. Details of Sutter’s involvement—which the government has yet to officially confirm—emerged in 2021 during the federal trial of AWD leader Kaleb Cole, information first revealed that August.
Being outed as a federal informant did not force Sutter into the shadows. Sutter kept publishing extremist books through his Martinet Press imprint, which helped fuel the ascent of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A), a murderous blend of Satanism and neo-fascism that is now pervasive in the global far right and has inspired violence in Russia, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and

This July turned out similar to last July in that temperatures were noticeably warmer than usual, especially the low temperatures which were 4 degrees F higher than usual while the highs were “only” 1.9 degrees F higher than usual. But humidity levels were also much higher than last year and that was reflected in the much higher total precipitation which was 4.9 inches more than the 30 Year climatological average for the month! The main reason for the much warmer and more humid conditions had to do with a huge blocking high pressure system over the western Atlantic that remained stuck between Bermuda and Newfoundland all month. Its minor shifts from day to day and week to week allowed a little variability in the weather conditions which occurred over Maine. But the general pattern and position of the high pressure system kept a persistent S to SW flow of humid tropical air coming up the east coast for most of the month. The big high pressure system also blocked most low pressure systems and their accompanying fronts that came across the continent from time to time and usually forced them up into Quebec where they usually fizzled out or continued moving toward Greenland and the North Atlantic. But before they fizzled out, they were usually able to dump some rain over New England, usually as hit or miss showers and thunderstorms. In a more typical summer, such random showers would tend to spread the rain out and not lead to too much by the end of the month (and so the climatological average of “only” 4.16 inches). However, the chances for showers and thunderstorms with that stuck pattern became so frequent that they generally added up to almost 5 inches more than usual! In addition, we also had the remains of Hurricane Beryl which came by around mid-month with a lot of excess tropical moisture to drop about 4 inches or more across the region in a 24 hour period even though the remains had fizzled out to a very weak disturbance as it went by across southern Quebec. I should also add that the abundant clouds that usually accompanied the high humidity made for very mild nights as reflected in the average min temperatures at my house that only dropped below 60 twice and never got below 57. But the frequent cloudiness also kept the daytime max temps from rising very much and we never got to 90 degrees F the entire month despite the very warm pattern that persisted all month. The total cooling degrees came to 245 compared to only 153 for an average July. This compares with 249 for last year which was a similar month, though not as wet.
