I saw them the other night, on Anzac day, in Brisbane.

They were great.

What the hey? Nobody's gonna come clean and join you Joe? The Paranoid album was mother's milk for about 20% of the planet growing up in the 70's, I thought. I guess that means the Sabbath generation is finally gonna take power. Soon.

Tommy Iommi plays pretty well in that clip for a guy with lymphoma. Fucking Ozzy don't give up.

I saw 'em at Winterland Ballroom, in 1976 or seven. They were great then, too. It was dark and they were loud as hell. But Ozzy was in great voice.

....only saw them with Ronny James Dio as frontman some time - 1980 ish - which was a disappointment to me & my school-age Wayne & Garth type buddies who idolised Ozzy , Lemmy & other rock debauchees - prob as we were all various shades of virgin who could hardly manage a cigarette without throwing up...

Ozzy seems one fairly disturbed fucker in retrospect - there was a tv prog on Sabbath with Tommy Lee describing OO off his face in a hotel room smearing his s**t all over the walls, & an old interview I read years back in a music paper about him kiling some cat or something as a kid...

...Sharon Osbourne & her gangster type "manager" father Don Arden pretty dodgy aswell....

Funny how things evolve. When they first started getting airplay I rejected them and their message, er, music, believing it to dark for me to absorb into my consciousness. Those were pretty dark times, but thank god for analgesics. Hence, their appearance was commanded. The bat thing was a bit more than performance art for my taste. I found it horrific! So if they came on the radio I'd quickly switch the channel. (somehow I didn't feel that way about Zappa) I never really listened to them until maybe '89. Now I appreciate them, their music, the well constructed lyric. They are one of the truly greatest bands to date. I rejected jazz, metal, punk & Hip hop at first and am naive to artists of their subcategories of today. My favorite rapper is Pigmeat Martin, but I doubt most have heard him. He's from more half a century ago, well more. Sorry! Got lost in memories!

I think my favorite song of Black Sabbath's is The Wizard, though my knowledge of their entire portfolio is quite limited. Interestingly enough, had I been more open-minded I would have learned the song carried my nickname at the time. Still is to some. Wasp is great too. There are more, of as you know, but I cannot place most music with its title, just a few. Those two a memorable enough to make the list.

One should never forget the old adage when it comes to unwarranted and ignorant prejudicial discounting, " Try it, you"ll like it." You can spit it out or find you want to swallow it whole.

Music has always been entertainment for me. I never really learned to play. I cannot recall many songs by name, never could, nor most lyric, but I know what I like when I hear it and today there's hardly anything I don't like. Angry metal and rap I don't take time to listen to. I spend lots of time listening to classical, having ignored it too and there's so much freat classical to list to!

Sorry for drifting!

Thanks Joe! Great Band, Great songs.

Thanks for the memories, Joe.

Yeah, definitely loves me some Sabbath. Though I'm probably of a slightly different vint-age than ufolk. I was high-school aged, cleaning out a rental property previously occupied by some lesbian hard-core "punk" chics and they'd left behind a copy of We Sold Our Soul For Rock n Roll - one side (b-side) of the record was completely melted but the other played fine so I started listening and was amazed. Before then I'd had this image of BS as "satanic" like all the fundamentalists had said. But I fuckin loved it! Ozzy's always had such a great freakin voice.

SAN ANTONIO — Ozzy Osborne is back in the Alamo City.

He's not here in person, but on a Fiesta medal.

Artpace, a local non-profit dedicated to the advancement of contemporary art, featured the rocker on its first ever Fiesta medal.

"We sold out in 48 hours online," said Artpace executive director Amanda Cruz.

The medal was designed by artist Jim Mendiola and Ruben Ortiz-Torres, reflecting a project from 2001. It pictures Ozzy as a bat, with an upside down Alamo serving as each wing.

Ozzy has a well-known history in San Antonio -- particularly at the Alamo. He was supposedly banned from ever performing in San Antonio after he was arrested in 1982 for urinating on the Alamo. It's a sore subject to some proud Texans, but also a quirky mishap that earned San Antonio another mention in rock and roll history.

"It's all in good fun," Cruz said.

"It would be a fun conversation starter," said Michael Helms, who was shown the medal at the NIOSA celebration on Thursday afternoon.

Not everyone agreed. One Fiesta-goer said, "Hell no, I would not wear it."

Sarah Reveley described Ozzy as "a rock singer who is still a drug addict."

1970-'71, age 14, I listened to the "Black Sabbath" album every day after school. A buddy and I learned the songs on our fuzzed-out guitars. We were giddy when "Paranoid" came out, more daily spins on the record player, more power-chord variations to learn.... In 1972 we saw them at the Seattle Center Arena. Tony Iommi's amplifier caught on fire. That was awesome.

I didn't follow them after the fourth album, but recently I've tried to get my bandmates to do a BS cover---say, "Iron Man"---but, for widely various reasons, they scoff (elitist bastards!).

BS trivia: Guitar Club folks might know that Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler tuned their guitars down a half-step, getting a fatter, juicier sound. The real reason was that Tony Iommi's fingertips had been sliced off in an accident and the looser strings were easier to fret with sore fingers. But it sounded good, too, and I guess a lot of metal guitarists have since adopted that (Robin Trower tunes down a whole step...juice squirting from every note).

One time a few years ago me and a girlfriend were waiting for her car outside of her rich ass parent's apartment building that also had a hotel in it downtown. When we came out there was a huge tour bus out front where the valet service comes and goes. Then I noticed a long line of guys holding like albums in their hands and other assorted things. I went up to them and asked what they were in line for. They treated me like a dickhead for not knowing and I didn't even get an answer until before I know it Ozzy comes out of the building. I was all "Holy shit. That's fucking Ozzy Osbourne!" He walks right past me along with his bodyguards to get on the bus to take him to show he was to play at Key Arena that night.

Here's the funny part.

He was clearly dazed and just looked spent as hell. Well, he breaks off from his entourage and starts heading the wrong way down the street. His guards/handlers start yelling to him "Ozzy, this way! This way, Ozzy." They had to go grab him by the arm and redirect him in the direction of the bus. The bus was right in front of him! It's like he didn't even see it. All the dudes in line to get something autographed by him swarmed him -- he didn't sign shit BTW. He just got on the bus and then the bus left.

I talked to the bellhops and valet people about the general sensation of seeing Ozzy in the wild and totally randomly (at least for me). Everyone was laughing about how confused he was. They said that when he showed up to the hotel like the day before or something he was holding two bags full of DVDs and the very first thing he did upon entering his hotel room was put the bags down, get on the bed, turn on the TV and ask where all the movie channels were. Guy was a befuddled shitshow, just like you'd imagine and in real life.

Re: Anyone into black sabbath?

Well its a bit over a week and I've finally come down properly.

I never thought I'd see black sabbath live. So anyway - tickets were 165 bucks each - wtf!!!

But it was worth it.

Played all the songs I wanted to hear - and i knew they were gonna play Fairies Wear Boots the song before they played it yeah you gotta believe me. In the middle of the previous song I had an incredibly strong premonition that it would be next - for no reason at all - and it was.

In the middle of the afternoon on Anzac day we left. We drove for 3 hours to get there, stopped in Brisbane at a friends art gallery (licensed art gallery) and watched the full moon rise over the city. A few fat yaks and scoobs later we piled into the car and went off to find the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Traffic jams to get in. People everywhere. Of all ages. Teenagers. People in their 50s and 60s. Everyone in between. The merchandise was ridiculously overpriced but we bought some anyway, and reflected on the fact that it was a good thing we didn't bring our daughter, who was 19 months old. Tho she loves black Sabbath and jumps up and down to them when we play them. She would have loved the gig, but hated the drive and the crush to get in and the lifetime of deafness that would have inevitably followed.

Saw friends at the gig - quite a few people had driven for hours to get out of the hills to get there.

...

Sorry just spent half an hour on youtube reliving the night.

Yeah anyway, for an Old Bastard Ozzy did OK. He held ti together most of the night, but it was obviously a struggle. Sabbath signed their first recording contract a few weeks after I was born so really he did well. Still sung great, struggled with the new songs and needed a teleprompter, but is that any surprise. i defy anyone to live his life and come out in their mid sixties and jump around and scream the way he did (or even be still alive). By the end of the gig he was fucked - physically exhausted - but he was still screaming at the crowd to go crazy. You've got to appreciate when someone can barely walk off stage cos they gave the gig everything they had. I hope I never forget the look of wonder and joy on Ozzy's face - that people are out there screaming at him for more. Its like inside he still thinks he's a hopeless little fuckup from Birmingham and can't believe people appreciate what he does so much.

Tommy Iommi and Geezer Butler were all class and masters of their craft. And Tom Clufelos gave us a seizure inducing drum solo that went on and on while the band ducked offstage for a cuppa and a nanna nap. The only person onstage who wasn't in the original band, born 10 years after the formed but still played seamlessly and fitted in perfectly.

After we finally got out of the carpark we headed home. Halfway there - it was midnight and we hadn't eaten for 10 hours - we stopped at the only thing open, a roadside petrol station/service centre with a MacDonalds and other franchise bullshit. There were about 15 people in there half of them had been at the gig. All of them walking around with a particular look on their face. One that said "Wow - did we really just see that? Wow!" We looked like a school of happily stunned mullets.

It was 12 hours later and nearly 500km there and back when our mate who was driving finally pulled over and let us out. Walking thru the paddock to the house under the stars with the faint glow of Brisbane behind the mountains over 100km away it was a little surreal. The only 2 people in an area 10 or 20 times the size of the arena we'd just shared with 25000 + other screaming maniacs, and the quiet...

What a night.

The first LP I ever brought with my own money was dirty deeds done dirt cheap. I was in primary school.

I don't like any acca dacca records after bon scott - Back in black is ok i spose, but they didn't need to make it 30 times.

I got to meet Brian Johnson, open mike night at our little bar restaurant in Watkins Glen NY. I believe he was in town for a Vintage car weekend as WG is a racing town, Used to have the Grand Prix now the big one is NASCAR- anyways- my buddies band finished playing and this familiar looking guy started talking to them, next thing you know he's belting out Back in Black with my best bud on drums!!
At the time I was not a big AC/DC fan, but it was an amazing experience. especially for my drummer friend.
I love them now, and consider B in B their best post Bon album and top 5 overall.
By the way, how doe you pronounce Crowley, HoL?
