What it's really like in CANADA

Postby annie aronburg » Tue Mar 11, 2008 3:01 pm

As a repatriated expatriate, I struggle daily with the culture shock of returning to my home and native land.

Spend too much time Vancouver, and one could easily assume the entire country is populated with dope-smoking multi-racial bisexual snowboarders. It's not though, it's mostly filled with Fred and Sharons.

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

And Ricky, Julian and Bubbles.

Give Fred and Sharon their own series on Showcase!

BC was in the grips of Trailer Park Fever when I came back in 05, but I guess it's something I'm saving for an enforced social situation or a snowstorm.

Not set up to watch movies or TV at my house, just the interwebs, but I've seen photos of the Trailer Park Boys and they remind me of these fine fellows.

It's the inevitable Who Needs a Movie? parody (actually very good)

And holy crap, another enigmatic Fred and Sharon production! (though the opening credits read "Ferd")

I have to visit Canada more often.

I would like to officially thank the local Canadians for their hospitality [and their regulations for cooking meat] and also to apologize for all of the minor disruptions of their culture that my [bimonthly] weekend tourism has caused.

See you in April.

What, do you mean Canada isn't Posum Lake and male Canadians aren't all Red Greens, Harolds, Daltons, Mikes and Haps?

Don't use the G word

Postby annie aronburg » Thu May 13, 2010 7:52 pm

The worst thing you can say.

Victoria, B.C. - One man who participated in a brawl at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in December pleaded guilty in Victoria provincial court today.

Samuel Gregory McGrath, 19, was sentenced by Judge Wayne Smith to four months in jail for the assault causing bodily harm but got 32 days credit for time served.

McGrath was with another inmate on Dec. 6, 2009 watching a basketball game at the institution’s gymnasium when they set upon another inmate, court heard.

The victim was punched in the face and then kicked while he was on the ground. He suffered a broken nose and cheekbone and bruises to his lower back.

What started the fight was one inmate calling another a “goof,” court heard.

“That’s the worst thing you can say in an institution,” said McGrath’s lawyer Mike Munro.

The jail administration punished McGrath by putting him in segregation for 20 days.

Smith advised McGrath he took part in a very serious assault. The inmates at VIRCC need to know the courts will not tolerate such violent behavior, he added.

McGrath has been ordered to stay away from both the victim and his co-accused.

I don't get that. My daughter's pop said the same thing. "oh, you never call someone a goof. That's a huge insult." What's the big deal about beeing called a goof? I can't help but think of this character:

I've heard that since the 70's. It's the word that means 'we're going to fight' in Canadian prisons. I've also noticed it rings the bell for bar and street fights... although most of the participants are likely just out of prison and heading straight back.

And yes, we're all having sex doggy-style this month so both partners can watch the playoffs.
