I'd heard that Rauschenberg had died, but not Elder.

I knew his stuff without knowing it was his stuff by reading MAD paperbacks as a kid, which repackaged MAD's very early days. A lot of the references were lost on me, but the art made that irrelevant. And he made me feel like I was reading something I shouldn't be, which is often a good feeling.

Hee hee, the "seal of disapproval" reminds me of the RI/Bush/eye of Horus seal in your upper left corner. I had those same paperbacks, then went through a stage of trying to aquire all the first 24 full color MADs from the late fifties. I had about fifteen of them before I kinda got priced out. Check out Starchie and Bottleneck smokin' butts, the chests on the chicks. Between Elder and Wally Wood, I learned early on what to look for in cartoon women and graphical subversiveness.

I met Rauschenberg once at a Chicago gallery opening of his printworks. I was nobody, and he was Rauschenberg, but still he talked to me affably for a while, in his southern gentlemanly fashion.

Yeah. It was strangely familiar. Mad.

Awesome.

I read old Mad Magazines from the 50s and 60s not too much later.
Sometimes I only knew what was being satired from the satire, not the original.
But it still worked.
CIA runs mainstream media since WWII:
news rooms, movies/TV, publishing
...
Disney is CIA for kidz!
