Discovery (by non-Native Americans)
The first sighting by non-natives is often credited to members of the Pike expedition, led by Zebulon Pike. After a failed attempt to climb to the top in November 1806, Pike wrote in his journal:
"...here we found the snow middle deep; no sign of beast or bird inhabiting this region. The thermometer which stood at 9° above 0 at the foot of the mountain, here fell to 4° below 0. The summit of the Grand Peak, which was entirely bare of vegetation and covered with snow, now appeared at the distance of 15 or 16 miles (26 km) [24–26 km] from us, and as high again as what we had ascended, and would have taken a whole day's march to have arrived at its base, when I believed no human being could have ascended to its pinical [sic]. This with the condition of my soldiers who had only light overalls on, and no stockings, and every way ill provided to endure the inclemency of the region; the bad prospect of killing any thing to subsist on, with the further detention of two or three days, which it must occasion, determined us to return."[3]
Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse were hired by LL Nunn to come to Telluride and build the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant to supply AC power to the Gold King Mine. This was the 1st time commercial-grade AC power was transmitted for any distance (3.5 miles). With General Electric (headed by JP Morgan and Thomas Edison) promoting DC power transmission, this successful Westinghouse Electric demonstration sparked the "War of the Currents." The 1893 Chicago World's Fair had exhibits to promote both AC and DC current but, following the fair, Westinghouse was awarded the contract to build an AC generation plant at Niagara Falls. Before long, Westinghouse Electric was building power plants in Idaho, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Mexico and on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
... The interaction between the cats went on for about 5 minutes.
Zeus typically stands tall, hisses and acts fairly aggressive when he sees other animals - mostly squirrels, other house cats or even dogs - through the glass door. But Zeus remained calm as he appraised the big cat.
"I think he thought 'Hmmm! This is different,' " Loveman said.
When the lion left the porch, Loveman went to an upstairs balcony and spotted a second lion, which Loveman thought was likely the mother of the first lion.
She watched and took photos as the cats wandered off, jumped a fence and disappeared...
