Texas legislator drops marijuana cigarette while speaking on floor

While speaking during the Texas legislative session, representative Tom Alvin (R) Altruria, dropped something unexpected on the House floor. Upon picking up the item, cameras caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette.

He quickly put it back in his pocket as legislators looked on and then continued to speak. Several DPS officers were on hand but did not seem concerned about Rep. Alvin’s possession of an illegal substance.

Ironically, the bill being discussed pertained to decreasing penalties for the possession of small amounts of cannabis. If passed, the bill would change state law and no longer jail those with small amounts and would instead only require a fine.

Rep. Alvin spoke in opposition to the bill stating “marijuana is a deadly and dangerous drug. It ruins people’s lives and is so addictive that people can become hooked on it just by touching it. We have to keep in mind that allowing any steps towards its legalization will ensure that children have access to this drug. Only by keeping it illegal and imposing tough sentences can we continue to ensure that this plant is no longer consumed by people who should not have it.”

After the session adjourned Rep. Alvin was questioned about the joint he had in his pocket and his remarks made in opposition to the bill.

“Well obviously state legislators enjoy special privileges that other people do not” he stated. As for his stance towards the penalty reduction bill he remarked “times are tough, budgets are tight and we have to make the best use of the state’s money. Having our police focus their time and effort on keeping these dangerous criminals away from society is a major priority, not to mention the jobs we are able to create in the prison and judicial system in general. Without jailing these people, we could be looking at creating more unemployment. It just isn’t economically sound to let these people go with just a ticket. We must have zero tolerance.”

As legislators struggle to tackle budget issues this session, funding to schools has been cut back. Over 800,000 people per year are jailed over possession of cannabis.

This story is satire, of course. There is no Tom Alvin in the Texas house... Or an Altruria, TX. (Near as I can tell)

Child smokes K2, eats dolls face
Politics May 18, 2013 Comments: 7

ALTRURIA, Texas — A six-year-old child accused of biting a dolls head off in a kindergarten classroom allegedly smoked K2, also known as “Spice,” before the incident.

Although school officials remain silent on the event, authorities from the Altruria police department were called to Altruria Elementary School on Friday afternoon, May 17, after a pipe and small bag of K2 were found in the child’s possession following an incident where the child allegedly bit the head off of a doll in a kindergarten classroom.

The child told authorities he obtained the substance from his uncle, who smokes the incense due to random drug testing from his probation officer stemming from a marijuana charge in June of 2012.

Altruria police confiscated the pipe and incense before calling the parents of the child.

“This is just another reason the war on drugs must continue,” a lead investigator, who asked to remain anonymous due to an ongoing investigation, told the Tribune Herald. “This substance is legal, and is safer than marijuana.

“Everyone wants to laugh and celebrate 4:20, but this is a serious issue. Drugs like marijuana lead to children eating dolls heads off and thinking that is normal.”

Kevin Sabet, founder of Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana), also weighed in on the issue.

“K2 and marijuana are one and the same,” Sabet said. “It’s like comparing margarine to butter. We all know marijuana kills; this is further proof. Do we really want a society filled with children eating people’s faces?”

The child is currently being suspended from the school while police investigate Friday’s events.

“There is an ongoing investigation into the incident involving a six-year-old smoking K2 incense at Altruria Elementary School on Friday, May 17,” the police department said in a press release sent to the media on Saturday morning.

“Due to this ongoing investigation, authorities will not comment further at this time.”

Stay tuned for further details as this case continues to unravel.

Something about the wording of that headline just makes me crack up.

Oh, he dropped his marijuana cigarette, did he? Poor fellow. Whatever next?

Will he be spilling his laudanum on the antimacassar? Fainting in the drawing room, maybe, due to the strictures of his whalebone corset?

Marijuana cigarette. :rofl2
