That I was unable to solicit members last year to match my offer of meeting half the price for professional forum software tells me it's far more conveniant to complain about such things than do something worthwhile to affect a solution.
Three ideas:
1. Open an account for Google Adsense and run text ads on the blog and forums. Monetize the site a little to help Jeff run server costs and working towards upgrading the forum software or buying a CMS/blog software that has more bells and whistles.
If running ads isn't what Jeff wants to do...
2. Put a friendly call out for site donation. I haven't thought about it until I read this thread but I'll gladly send $20 in. Wad up a twenty and throw it at Jeff's door. Financial mudballs for good, anyone?
And if that still doesn't fly...
3. Buy a "Rigouous Intuition" book personally signed by Jeff. Factor in the cost of the book, shipping costs and add an extra $5 on for the autograph.
I don't consider any one of these three options bad ideas. It costs money to run RigInt because the people that host and operate these websites need to eat too, you know. There's nothing wrong with Jeff making some cash to put toward this site, expanding it or even working towards the goal that one day - SHOCK! - he can make some money writing online. We all benefit from this place and if we can help Jeff a little, why not?
Personally I go for #1. Make money from Google and maybe one or two other ad agencies. #3 is kind of cool though and I bet a bunch of people would like to have a book autographed by Jeff of their very own.
If you think the ad idea has some merit and you want any help figuring some of this stuff out, I can help. I've been educating myself about the Adsense and online advertising system for a while. It's fairly straightforward to do.
