monster's asked that his account be closed. I've done that.

The flashpoint was this thread, I suppose:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=26822

But I'm sure it wasn't that alone.

Part of what alarmed me about the "RI chat" vulnerability was how Dream's End was innocently schmoozing members, and he seemed to be cultivating monster. I saw this morning, after monster was reprimanded for his language in that thread, that there was a comment posted to the "Kid Kemona" blog:

Bloody well right?

Fucking House of Trolls. All of them.

The link was to monster's thread, and I was almost certain it was him.

Sad, I'm grateful at least for the clean break.

Oh boy. Jeff, one way to look at it is having haterz is a sign of your success because it's certainly not a reflection of any meanness or unfairness on your part.

Glad I stayed clear of the chats.

Thanks sunny. It does make me feel sick, though. monster had been here a long time.

Still, if that's the way he wants it, I'd rather have him sniping from the outside than from within.

I was off the board when that exchange happened. I'm sorry we couldn't have kept monster around. I pm'ed him about his comment to alwyn yesterday after I saw Peregrine's flag - tried to keep it light while reminding him of board rules, because I've always thought he was a valuable poster. However, I know of late he'd been having pretty severe conflicts within the climate change debates. I guess I should have spoken up on the thread, but by the time I'd reconsidered, Jeff had already gotten there.

This moderator stuff has it's ups and downs, huh.

I think I'll reach out to him in an email. He has been a valuable poster, and it's worth making an effort to at least mitigate whatever ill will or grudge he bears right now.

(Though it'll have to wait until after my afternoon wisdom tooth extraction. :ambulance: )

Okay, I think I neeed to hear about the tooth-pulling, 'cause my dentist has been trying to talk me into it, but I'm not fucking doing it. My mom is eighty and still has hers, and her dentist does the same thing.

Oops, that was pretty off topic, huh.

First time taking the gas, which was sweet, but the freezing was very weak which killed my buzz. And that was some painful shit. I don't think it was normal, though. He had to dig down to the bottom of my jaw and scrape away infection that had surrounded the nerve. He said if I'd had the tooth out at 18 - like I was supposed to have - it wouldn't have been this bad, because it's been migrating all this time. Also, my odds of loss of feeling in my jaw rose 500%. (Still only 5% chance, but he said that was very high.)

Feel better post-op than I'd expected. Now it's no worse than 10 days ago when I knew my mouth was fucked up, and now that it's in the process of being unfucked it's easier to endure.

FWIW, I sent monster this email.

Hey,

I was very sad to see your request to close your account. You've been posting at RI since 2005 and your contributions have been substantial, and you're going to be missed very much by myself and many others.

I want to invite you to tell me, if you care to, what prompted your decision. I expect reaction to your thread on objects near the sun was the flashpoint, but I expect that wasn't it entirely. If there's anything to talk about, I'd like to talk about it. I'd hate to think you're leaving with ill will. And I'd like to think that perhaps you may rethink your choice.

anyway, cheers, and all the best,

Jeff

FWIW, I got a nice reply from monster.

In part:

I quit drinking cold turkey, I quit smoking cold turkey, and it's time to quit RI cold turkey. (And yes, it's a compliment to you that the site is like a drug.)

I do regret the abruptness. I also regret my treatment of Alwyn. There were, shall we say, biochemical reasons for my bad mood that day (nothing so crude as alcohol or street drugs, but nevertheless.)

I don't anticipate returning. If I ever do return, I will register with this same email address (if the software allows it) and/or find some way to tell you that it's me.

In one way, it was an immature storm-out on my part, but in another way, it was the only way I could really quit RI - totally and completely. If I left my account open and just tried to stop posting, that would never work. I don't have the willpower. So I had to remove the option.
