An RI Book Club

Postby Occult Means Hidden » Fri Jul 29, 2011 5:14 pm

Hi all,

Thought this might be a good idea. Maybe we can vote on a book to read an discuss. I thought the book "God's Debris" from Scott Adams would have been a good suggestion because how easy it was to ingest. But previously reading a book is no fun...

Any interest or ideas?

Some suggestions:
The Tao Teh King, Legge
Something by Eckhart Tolle
The Golden Dawn, Regardie
Political books are good but they're depressing for Book Clubs
Rage against the ever vicious downward spiral.

This sounds like a great idea!

I'm in for sure...don't really have any great suggestions for titles, just let me know what we're readin'.

On edit: I thought that Tolle was familiar...I've read The Power of Now, and found it pretty darn good. I was afraid it was going to be too 'self-help-y', but it wasn't. I'd like to read another by him, perhaps Milton's Secret or A New Earth?

I wanted to read The Power of Now but again, it's no fun if someone else has read it. Let's get an arbitrary number like 6 people interested at least with six suggestions.

Great idea OMH!

Definitely hard to pin down a specific book to suggest. I'd love to see suggestions that combine many of the topics that RI covers but those are likely few and far between.

I've not read any of the suggestions nor anything by those authors. Color me ignorant ... but which Teh King / Ching (?) are you suggesting: Lao-Tze, Crowley?

Some overly generalized topical suggestions:

- Dreams / Consciousness
- Synchronicity / Divination
- Trickster Mythology

I read it several years ago, and could probably stand a refresher course....

Been doing a little online research....found a guy named Robert Moss who has a few interesting looking titles on dreaming. I can get this title at my library, which I like, cuz I'm too broke to buy books right now.

I'm interested. Feeling the urge to get back to reading. Malcolm X's autobiography is at the top of my list, but I can set it aside and go for that dream book that's been recommended. Count me in! :thumbsup

I'm interested! And I like the look of the dream book as well.
Happy to make recommendations for other books, too.

Awesome. That's four. I went ahead and put a hold on the Moss book at the library. Probably won't have it in my hot little hands for a day or two...I can wait to start reading if you all want to get more peeps on board and/or until everyone has the book.

I count 5 interested:

Elfi
Lao
Mary
BKS
and myself

Hopefully we can get six people.

Looks like it'll likely by Moss' book on Active Dreaming. I haven't ran a Book Club before but I suppose it's important to remember that it's not a race. A structured time of a week per chapter to discuss may be the way to go. Other ideas and members still wanted. Gotta figure out how long it will take me to procure a copy.

If we don't have a quorum by Thursday, I'll try to muscle one of the other Philly RI guys into the club [kidding on the muscling]. I think it'll be a good thing to get going.

If your library doesn't have it, then anyone looking to buy it can follow my Amazon link posted earlier.

Yeah! At least one more would be great...c'mon bookworms!

And I like the structured time idea, so we'll all be on the same page (pun intended!).

I suppose some people just can't do without structure.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible. -- Lawrence of Arabia
