Kelly is supossed to debut his second feature film, Southland Tales at the Cannes Film Festival in France in late May. As it turns out, Kelly's passport has been "under review" for several days in Washington DC because there's a "James Kelly" on the terrorist watch list.

Kelly says that the situation is "getting out of control." Really.
Posted May 4th 2006 9:31AM by Kim Voynar

Apparently the State Department isn't convinced that director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) isn't a terrorist. According to Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, Kelly's passport has been held "under review" in good old Washington, D.C., bastion of freedom, because some guy named James Kelly is on their terrorist watch list, and Kelly's full name is James Richard Kelly.

All this means that Kelly, whose film Southland Tales premieres at Cannes, which opens May 17 -- and is in competition for the top prize at the fest -- may not be able to be there to enjoy his moment in the spotlight. Now, I'm all for keeping terrorists from blowing up planes and committing other dastardly deeds, but really, doesn't it seem there ought to be some easier way for the State Department to differentiate between a (relatively) well-known film director and a potential terrorist than making his mom dig up his junior high yearbook?

In what is surely an unintentional case of irony -- if only because it's hard to imagine government bureaucrats being that clever -- Southland Tales is about the government (what -- our government?!?) imposing a police state in the wake of a second major terrorist attack. It all kinda makes me wonder how many other people with common names get caught in this kind of snafu -- and makes me ever so thankful I chose to stick with my uncommon maiden surname rather than changing to my husband's very common one.

Fortunately, I doubt there are a whole lot of James Rocchi's out there, at least on terrorist watch lists, so hopefully our esteemed Editor-in-Chief won't experience a similar hold-up getting himself to Cannes to give you all the French film festival coverage you can stomach.

The Donnie Darko director's full name is James Richard Kelly, hence the confusion. But c'mon...one guy may have done something criminal and the other's a friggin' cult director, for Chrissake. It's only a couple of weeks before the festival begins and the situation, says Kelly, has not only failed to improve but is "getting out of control ." So he's now seeking help from Senator Diane Feinstein's staff, who are in contact with State Department logjammers. To prove he's not a terrorist, Kelly's mother "is having to submit my Junior High School Yearbook, among other things," he said today. I suspect he's only half-joking when he says, "I might not make it to Cannes after all, and I might be stuck watching it on E!" Southland Tales is partly about police-state measures that the U.S. government imposes after a second 9/11-type disaster, and given this, says Kelly, "The paranoid conspiracy freak inside me is starting to think this has something to do with the film."

on female characters.

Postby OpLan » Sun May 07, 2006 11:25 am

I just watched this again.I wanted to push my anti female point, but my opinion broadened to include the men.
I cant see a worthy female character at all.
Darkos sister engages in a filthy dinner table conversation in front of her parents and kid sister.I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've sworn like that in front of family.I'd wake up next day with a black eye.
His kid sister is dressed like a paedophiles fantasy..she embodies the notion that youth is obsessed with fame. She's too young to be anything but a puppet to all the influences around her.
His mother succumbs to emotional blackmail from the teacher when she needs to fight the paedo charges. All the other mothers (not shown in the movie) turn her down.
The Paedo supporter..horrible woman.
His shrink brings him out of his hypnosis session with his hand on his hard on.How embarrasing do you think that would be for you?She is a psychologist. Her embarrassment does not fit with her profession.Neither does her humiliating reaction.
Barrymores character..humiliates the newcomer..settles for a primal scream instead for fighting for her job.
Gretchen plays along with the cutest boy game.
The girl with a crush on Donnie..hmm..her willingness to prance about like a ballerina in the talent show is incongruous with her shy character..she is also quite overweight.Or as the brownshirts put it so sweetly..the fat chinese chick..
The only redeeming female is the old lady scientist, but age and senility has reduced her to a traffic hazard. Her presence as a strong female is her book..her physical presence is a target for ridicule, neglect and abuse.

I then realised that I'm not sympathetic to anyone but the old lady in this film..they all suck.Including Darko.I think the first couple of times I saw this movie I was left grappling with the time travel aspects..getting it all to tie up.
All the males are reprehensible too.
How much effort would it take ANYONE to move the post box from across the road to oh maybe her garden?so she doesn't have to cross the road to pick up her mail?
The teenagers break into her basement.
The father allows obscene language in front of the little one.My father still doesn't like it..and we don't do it.
The ER teacher puts his job before the truth, even though the teacher he's humping has lost her job for just doing her job.I wouldn't want to teach there..or I would try to change things.
Cunningham,the principal,all authority..all dubious.
Darko..vandalises the school;meaningless vandalism, not constructive protest. He burns Cunninghams house not giving a thought about possible loss of life..then again,I suppose he was in a trance. However,he doesn't think twice about shooting frank in the face..why did frank have to die there?
When he goes off on a tirade,he might have a point to make but his method leaves a lot to be desired. He doesn't actively join in the ridicule of chinese chick or old lady, but he doesnt go out of his way to defend them.
If I was his dad he wouldn't treat his family so bad.No matter whatever the hell is wrong with his vicious little mind.Darko is no angel.None of them are.

OpLan, it sounds like you went looking for a reason not to like any of the women in the movie. All of these women were flawed, true, but I still found them sympathetic.

The planet of perfect people must be a lonely place.

Postby OpLan » Mon May 08, 2006 8:25 am

ouch ouch ouch !! I take it all on board..I really didn't mean to come across as a sexist nazi pig there..by brownshirts & fat chinese chick I was referring to the st*rmfr*nt crowds description of her.
When she is on stage, her dance is intercut with people in the audience giggling at her.At the bus stop she is ridiculed. When Barrymore is sacked, she is sat on her own away from the other kids, eating. She withdraws from Darkos friendship telling him to shut up.Her weight is not healthy. She is another weak character. She is an object of derision.I still maintain that the obscene dinner table conversation at the beginning of the movie is not normal behaviour.I dont live in a perfect world either.I don't think it bodes well for your society when the 6 year old kid you've just told to stop throwing bricks tells you to go f*ck off and die,c*nt.(and the father adds that 6 yr olds are supposed to throw bricks so yeh go F*ck off and die)
I'm just pointing out that all the people in this film are portrayed as flawed in some way.Knowing me its probably irrelevant anyway..so I'll shut the hell up.
