Thanks for this! I never saw the movie although we used to own a copy (sold it on eBay)! Now I'll have to go and rent it

Intel mention on DD Website

Postby JD » Thu Mar 30, 2006 3:54 pm

The intel mention on the website is that Donnie's physics teacher works for an intel agency. He's the one that gives Donnie the book on Time Travel.

The website has all kinds of details that might strike bells with people. I caught the obvious stuff only. See the movie and work through it; it's kinda iritating as its uses puzzles to work through. You have to watch and maybe rewatch the movie to get the answers. I'm not sure if I got to the end or not. I got as far as the bit about the serial numbers on the jet engines. I suspect there is more but couldn't figure out how to drill further into it.

that teacher also tells donnie he can't continue a conversation about time travel "because [he] could lose [his] job".

there's also a random scene where the physics teacher and drew barrymore's english teacher are sitting together and the physics teacher says with a smile "donnie darko" and they both kind of nod in agreement. scene always struck me as odd because it doesn't seem necessary.

the name Roberta Sparrow always struck me as a name that means or signifies something, but I don't know what.

This is refreshing, because all of the discussions I've seen about this movie since it was released get stuck on its perceived lack of philosophical sophistication and questionable artistic merits, leaving the manifold symbolism by the wayside.

Pay attention to Donnie's doctor, and note her change in tone when she says:

Quote:
If the sky were to open up, there would be no law, there would be no rule.
"The intel mention on the website is that Donnie's physics teacher works for an intel agency. He's the one that gives Donnie the book on Time Travel."
wow!...that's actually really bizarre...I hadn't seen that. So he's an intel operative moonlighting as a teacher?

"hat teacher also tells donnie he can't continue a conversation about time travel "because [he] could lose [his] job".
I always took it to mean he was nervous because the conversation had headed into a religious area...but now that you mention it, wasn't the entire movie taking place in a christian or catholic private school? all the kids wore uniforms, so I assumed so. if the discussion did head into that area, there wouldn't be a problem for the teacher if the school was Christian or Catholic. I suppose he might have been someone that was just teaching at a christian school and personally didn't hold those beliefs...so maybe he didn't want to get fired for pushing an agnostic/atheist/whatever viewpoint.

"there's also a random scene where the physics teacher and drew barrymore's english teacher are sitting together and the physics teacher says with a smile "donnie darko" and they both kind of nod in agreement. scene always struck me as odd because it doesn't seem necessary."

yeah...what was that about? was that implying that they both felt he was a good student or that they knew something was different about him? I never understood that.

Your good will comes through loud and clear. I guess my point was that diverting the discussion to focus on negative influence only serves to assist said influence in overshadowing everything that works against it.
"A crooked stick will cast a crooked shadow."

The Marquis + Richard Kelly

Postby JD » Thu Mar 30, 2006 5:44 pm

Interesting the Marquis was pointed out out.

The Night of the Living Dead - is this an analogy of Donnie after the engine crashed through his bedroom? Living, yet dead?

The Last Temptation of Christ - is this a reference to the "sacrifice" of his own life that he makes in the end so others may live?

The "end of the world" bit - does this strike anyone as apocolyptic in the manner of FundaMENTAList Christian theology? Considering the Donnie/Christ connection there may be some meat on that bone.

I find fascinating that the writer/director Richard Kelly was on 24 years old when the film was shot. He recieved only $9K to write and direct the film. www.imdb.com/name/nm0446819/bio How does someone so young, from a small town in Virginia, have enough insight into parapolitics to pull this off? Donnie Darko was a great movie.

Jake Gyllenhal really reminds me of my friend Matty Balls, in that one. For years now, he's been obsessed with time, time travel, and calendrics, among other things.
Conversations with him are always interesting and enlightening. He pulls ecclectic knowledge out of nowhere and everything that I have had the doubt to look up, checked out.

My take on this movie is one of occultic knowledge coming to us from all directions. The time travel themes actually remind me a little of Jeff's most recent post on zero-point. Donnie's mentor has actually just taught him how to tap into it.

Re: Child Porn Motivation speaker, linked to Clinton and Bus

Postby Gouda » Fri Mar 31, 2006 7:00 am

Just came across this tidbit on Tim Boucher's blog when I was actually looking for something else - regarding the arrest of Michael Fortino, a high-profile motivational speaker, on child-porn charges. Coincidentally, Boucher notes that he found this info in the comments to a thread somewhere here at RI, sometime ago...

www.timboucher.com/journa...n-charges/

Quote:
I’m about a month late on catching this news item, but it seems that art does in fact imitate life - or the other way around.
