AP) A former priest at Boys Town, the fabled home for wayward youths, on Monday denied accusations that he sexually abused boys.

Former Boys Town pupil James Duffy alleged in a lawsuit last month that the Rev. James Kelly and a counselor, the late Michael Wolf, repeatedly molested him in the late 1970s.

The suit named neither Kelly nor Wolf as defendants, instead naming Boys Town and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha.

On Sunday, the Omaha World-Herald reported that four other men have made sex abuse allegations against Kelly and Wolf. None has sued.

Addressing the lawsuit and the other allegations, Kelly said: "I definitely deny it."

"The stuff that is coming out now, they are coming out of the woodwork," Kelly said in a telephone interview from his home in Carson City, Nev.

He said he's considering a defamation of character lawsuit: "Somebody said I should be proactive, and I'm thinking about it."

James Martin Davis, the attorney hired by Boys Town to lead an investigation into Duffy's allegations, said the home will probe the new allegations as well.

"I'm concerned with the validity of all these allegations," he said.

One of the men who lodged the new complaints, 35-year-old Wayne Garsky of Oakland, Calif., told The Associated Press on Monday night that he was at Boys Town in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

"I was 12 years old, dude, and I was put in a place I thought was safe and it wasn't safe," Garsky said.

Kelly was accused of sexual misconduct in 1983 and 1984 in New York, but two investigations by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany found the allegations not credible.

Both Wolf and Kelly left Boys Town in 1983. The school's name was changed to Girls and Boys Town in 2000.

The home was made famous by the Oscar-winning 1938 Spencer Tracy movie "Boys Town."

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha Catholic Archdiocese admitted Thursday that it was negligent in the way it handled the case of former priest Daniel Herek.

Church Admits Negligence

A former altar boy and his mother are suing the archdiocese. They say the church failed to protect them from Herek (pictured, left).

Herek himself has been dropped from the lawsuit because of his mental condition. He's now undergoing psychiatric treatment at a state facility.

In 1998, the former priest was convicted of sexually assaulting a boy, and manufacturing child pornography while he was pastor at St. Richard Catholic Church.

Attorneys for the archdiocese said the church was negligent in the supervision of Herek.

In the courtroom, the church's attorney, Ed Hotz, said, "We admit that Father Herek did something wrong to this young man ... We're not contesting that the archdiocese was responsible for the supervision of Father Herek."

Omaha chancellor the Rev. Michael Gutgsell concurred. "Negligence in the supervision of Father Herek in regard to the two plaintiffs," Gutgsell said.

Jury selection began Thursday morning in the civil trial, brought by the former alter boy and his mother.

The judge excused several jurors from the pool because they said they would have trouble making the church pay a large dollar amount.

Marsha Coffeen, a Catholic herself, was one who was excused after she heard the million-dollar figure. "Is the archdiocese going to have to go through this every time a case comes up, and can they afford to do that?" Coffeen said.

The church has settled two other suits from former altar boys. Four others are scheduled for trial later this year. Gutgsell said the church tried to settle this case, but the family has not accepted the offer.

Diocese location Bishop's name Allegation
Omaha, Neb. ARCHBISHOP ELDEN CURTISS
He has come under criminal investigation in connection with a pending child-pornography possession case against one of his priests and recently admitted negligent supervision of another, the Rev. Daniel Herek, who's been convicted of manufacturing pornography and abusing an altar boy. Archbishop Curtiss has said he took immediate action against Father Herek when pornographic evidence first surfaced in 1997, but documents now emerging in civil court show several prior warnings of inappropriate behavior with children. The archbishop also suspended a third man this spring, the Rev. Thomas Sellentin, after the priest admitted molesting boys in parishes years ago. A spokesman said the archbishop learned of that abuse only recently, though another priest and a former state Supreme Court judge said it was documented decades ago. In mid-May, the chief prosecutor in Madison County, Neb., said Archbishop Curtiss could face witness-tampering charges because he sought the resignation of a Catholic schoolteacher who'd told police that the Rev. Robert Allgaier viewed child pornography at work. The district attorney has since said he would not charge the archbishop. Teacher Linda Hammond said the archbishop told her, in the presence of others, "You shouldn't have done this. We had it handled. You ruined a man's life." Archbishop Curtiss has said he wasn't trying to sway testimony. He has said that the priest was not accused of abusing children and was deemed by experts not to be attracted to them. Earlier, Madison County prosecutor Joe Smith criticized the archbishop for not coming to authorities when Father Allgaier admitted, in early 2001, that he had been viewing child pornography. Instead, the archbishop sent the priest to counseling and removed him from a high school teaching job - then let him teach at a middle school until his arrest in February In the late 1970s, as leader of the Diocese of Helena, Mont., Bishop Curtiss reassigned the Rev. Wilson Smart despite pedophilia allegations that had first emerged in 1959; the bishop later said he had failed to examine the priest's personnel file. In 1993, Bishop Curtiss admitted that he later removed letters documenting abuse from the file, acknowledged "shortsightedness and misjudgment" and added: "There has been a climate of silence on the part of priests and people, but there can be no more."

boys town

Postby sw » Tue Oct 06, 2009 8:37 pm

I'll never know the full reason behind a lot of my life or the people in it.

I think my Dad might have been recruited when he was at Creighton.

After graduating, he went to Boys Town for years as a seminarian.

He later left Boys Town and headed to the West Coast. Our family later moved back to Omaha where my Dad continued ties to Boys Town plus he worked at the Omaha World Herald.

Omaha years were the worst of my life and that is saying alot.

angry

Perhaps the angriest my father has ever been at me with all of my "come out" to my family about abuse....was when I went forward about Fr.Richard.

I have not been able to rule out that my father may have testified in richard's defense that I was crazy and in mental hospitals. He joined the FMS and still has the FMS literature on his bookshelf.

He yelled at me during a family memorial service that "what would happen to the church if every time a person was INSULTED by a priest, they complained?" I said, Geez Dad, I was sexually assaulted by this priest, he didn't just insult me. In keeping with family tradition, the rest of the family just sat in stunned silence and then promptly forgot the incident happened.

Wiki on Creighton:

Creighton University is a university located in Omaha, Nebraska. The university was founded as Creighton College in 1878 through a gift from Mary Lucretia Creighton, who stipulated in her will that a school be established in memory of her husband, prominent Omaha businessman Edward Creighton. Edward's brother, John Creighton, is credited with fostering and sustaining the university's early growth and endowment.

Sitting on a 130-acre (0.53 km2) campus just outside Omaha's downtown business district, the university currently enrolls about 6,992 students. Creighton is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

yea

Yes, he joined soon after I told my family I was abused by him and had DID.

He would send me the FMS stuff and books like Confabulations.

The crazy thing is that they say I am making it up even though my sister says the abuse is true. My mom said I brainwashed my older sister.

Our family had a big meltdown when I came out I think around 1993. I didn't talk to any of them mostly until 1995. No one has discussed the topic ever since.

But, my parents are really old now, they didn't have us until later in life. And, my dad is actually very nice now and loving for the most part. His memory is shot totally and he does not remember most things from day to day. He repeats the same stuff in the same conversation just like he didn't just say anything. Kind of a blessing because it has given me peace because the "war" is over because he has no memory left barely what if had for breakfast.

He never talked much about his own life. I know it was bad. His mom killed herself when I was three. My grandmother was the creepy one. She was a teacher and was having an affair with one of her students who ended up being my grandfather. They kicked her out of being a teacher. I think she was the only who abused my dad.

Will never know now though.

You are less fortunate in that way than I, SW, what a morass, a tragic one. There are parts of my parents, more my mother than my father probably, who are actually proud, I think, that I've tried to escape.

Just imagine, we have now generation 3 coming through and soon generation 4 and still the public is blind. Their entire political system is run by puppet/slaves and they are blind. I know of very few survivors, one woman, where it went generational again, who especially comes to mind, and has managed to get her kids into treatment, and who is working to break the cycle. What a mess.

Is there a connection between the two? I know Offutt was a stop for W on 9/11, but other than that I haven't heard anything special about it.

Add Union Pacific and ConAgra.

Chigger, why did you bring up Hobbs? That case was at least a couple of years ago, and it was a fairly "routine" pedo one at that. Were you heading some place with that?
The real issue is that there is extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new.

Indeed it has. And, I have found that Omaha is best fleshed out in the Irish pubs of the Old Market area in downtown, on Howard Street.

. . . and don't forget that Omaha is the home of John Galt Boulevard.

Why so many sex offenders? (Omaha, Lincoln: lawyers, buying a house, neighborhood)

03-05-2008

We are moving to Omaha in the summer, so I've been looking for a house in the Dundee area, which I think is beautiful. A friend told me to look in familywatchdog for sex offenders before buying a house, and for my surprise there are a lot in this area!!

We live in the Twin Cities and I found 42 sex offenders while in Omaha I found 157!!! I do not understand why there are so many being Omaha half the size of the Twin Cities.

Please someone help me understand this. I am freaking out right know. I have two daughters and it's a big concern of mine.
