ALBANY — The A&E network debuts its new series "Cults and Extreme Belief" at 10 pm (EDT) Monday (tonight) with an episode devoted to the case of NXIVM, the Capital Region-based organization whose leader, Keith Raniere, is facing federal sex-trafficking charges.

The report, hosted by Elizabeth Vargas, features an interview with Sarah Edmondson, who describes how she was recruited for a secret master-slave group within NXIVM in which members were branded with a symbol that they later learned included the initials of Raniere and Allison Mack, a former actress in the TV series "Smallville" who is currently facing charges as well.

Raniere was arrested in late March in a luxury Mexican resort before being returned to the U.S. He is currently in federal custody downstate, while Mack remains free on a $5 million bond.

Attorneys for Raniere and Mack insist the branding and membership in the group was voluntary, though prosecutors allege its members were required to provide compromising material, referred to as "collateral," as a control mechanism.
