Far-right immediately jumps to defend Roseanne after her show was canceled for racist tweet
Some of the most conspiratorial far-right voices, such as Pizzagate truthers Jack Posobiec and Mike Cernovich, raced to defend Barr. Posobiec encouraged his followers to push ABC to reverse its decision, while Cernovich attempted to layer his defense with a convoluted, confused point about “free speech.”
Others claimed that Barr’s comments, which compared Jarrett’s looks to those of characters from the Planet of the Apes film franchise, weren’t racist at all. Bill Mitchell, one of President Trump’s most vocal supporters, tweeted that Barr’s comment merely pointed to the theory of evolution, while Gavin McInnes — a far-right provocateur who has previously called transgender people “gender n*ggers” — defended Barr’s comments outright.
Roseanne’s Gender Nonconforming Character Seems Designed to Appease Anti-Trans Feminists

Ames McNamara as Mark and Roseanne Barr as Roseanne in Roseanne.
The revival of Roseanne, Roseanne Barr’s sitcom about the working-class Conner family, has already spurred a great deal of controversy. And for good reason: Barr supports President Donald Trump, as does her character, and the show reinforces the misconception that Trump supporters are primarily people who have fallen on hard times, when in fact they are on average better off than most Americans. Barr’s vociferous support for conspiracy theories has also been impossible to ignore given that she keeps promoting extremely weird ones. Yet Barr’s well-documented transphobia, as well as her association with an anti-transgender ideology described as “the Westboro Baptist Church of feminism,” has received comparatively little media attention.
Mark wouldn’t be problematic if the show’s star didn’t have a virulently anti-transgender streak.
The fact that Barr’s TV show grandson, Mark, is depicted as gender nonconforming—and that Roseanne producer Sara Gilbert is a lesbian—has dulled criticism of the show within the LGBTQ community. But dig deeper into Barr’s beliefs, and it becomes apparent that Mark was likely designed to appease feminists who hate transgender people.
To be sure, there are gender expansive kids like Mark. Children who push the boundaries of gender expression have legitimate experiences worthy of celebration. This character wouldn’t be problematic if the show’s star didn’t have a virulently anti-transgender streak. But anti-trans feminists often use such children to argue against the validity of kids for whom full social and perhaps, eventually, medical transition is the best path. And that is very likely what Barr is trying to do.
Barr’s public disgust at transgender people dates back to a 2001 book in which she describes transgender women as “a huge guy with boobs talking about female hormones and deciding to keep his penis.” In 2012 Barr mocked Green Party candidate Jill Stein for declining to debate her, tweeting, “Jill is also in favor of letting men into spaces where young girls get changed,” and “Women do not want your penises forced in their faces or in our private bathrooms.
Respect that FACT.”
Barr has a strong following on Twitter among self-proclaimed “gender critical feminists,” also known as trans-exclusionary radical feminists, or TERFs. She’s also hosted interviews with some of them and effectively endorsed their positions. This loose (and not particularly coherent) ideology is based on the notions that sex equals gender (i.e., they reject the validity of gender identity) and that transgender people are very bad for society and thus should be “morally mandated out of existence.”
In 2009, the Jerusalem Post quoted Barr as calling Israel a “Nazi state.” On Kathleen Wells' radio show in 2011, shecalled Israel a “brutal and undemocratic theocracy…which has the world's fourth largest army.” In the same interview, she decried the 2009 Israeli invasion, Operation Cast Lead, as “terrible crimes against humanity” that made her “weep and sweat at night.”
Barr went on to denounce Zionism:
“A Jew is required to correct his thinking and transform the world for the better, but Zionism has changed every single corner of Judaism now…What are the Zionists fighting for? Land? For what? Strip malls and movie theaters and tract housing?”
She praised the courage of Rachel Corrie, who died defending Palestinian homes in Gaza, and she hailed the Gaza flotilla that broke the Israeli blockade of the Palestinian enclave.
That same year, Roseanne volunteered for an inexplicably offensive photo shoot/article for Heeb Magazine titled, That Oven Feelin’, which featured her dressed as Adolf Hitler with moustache and Nazi armband. Pictures from the session show her eating burned “Jew cookies” fresh from the oven. Though both she and the magazine initially defended the tasteless stunt, the article no longer appears on the Heeb site.
Charlie Chaplin showed, in his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator, that the subject of Hitler and Nazism was a rich target for satire. But his portrayal in that film was acute and penetrating, and skewered Hitler in a thought-provoking way. Such sardonic humor seems to be missing from Barr’s photo shoot, which did little more than defile the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
In 2013, she outdid herself, promoting a jazz concert by the anti-Semitic, Holocaust-denying ex-Israeli Gilad Atzmon. Atzmon has said that the greatest historical tragedy to afflict the Jewish people was “not at all an historical narrative.” When criticized, Barr called the claims against Atzmon “lying bullshit.”

How Roseanne Barr Abandoned All Reason and Embraced the Alt-Right
Barr has retweeted InfoWars reports on the “5.7 Million Illegals” who they baselessly claim voted in the presidential election. She shared a YouTube video titled, “CONFIRMED: SCALISE IS AT THE SAME HOSPITAL THAT TOOK OUT SETH RICH,” as well as various other Seth Rich-related bulletins. She’s shared articles from The Gateway Pundit and Milo Yiannopoulos’ website, as well as Alex Jones videos. She shared a link that promised to expose “Kamala Harris’ Dirty Sex Secret,” and she’s retweeted transphobic comments and tirades against supposedly violent “Muslim Migrants” that blare, “Americans Don’t Want these Savages in our towns!”
If Barr’s evolution from political outsider to card-carrying Pepe is an understandable—if disturbing—trajectory, her positions on Israel mark a complete ideological 180. Prior to her Trump Twitter takeover, Barr was perhaps most infamous for a photo shoot in Heeb magazine titled “That Oven Feelin.” In the shoot, the Jewish Barr posed as “Domestic Goddess Hitler,” showing off her Nazi armband and pulling burned “Jew cookies” from the oven. While the shoot was eventually pulled from the Heeb website, rest assured that Roseanne’s Hitler spread really puts Kathy Griffin’s latest antics into perspective. Barr has long played fast and loose with accusations of Nazism; in 2009, she wrote a blog post in which she called Israel a “Nazi state.” Two years later, she deemed the country to be a “brutal and undemocratic theocracy…which has the world’s fourth largest army.” She also denounced “the ethnic cleansing that is happening in Gaza right now,” continuing, “I say it’s the entire world’s fault, not just Israel’s and not just the Jews’, for allowing the terrible crimes against humanity.”
But in recent years, Barr appears to have totally split with her former belief system; now Israel’s critics, particularly supporters of BDS (the movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel), are the Nazis. When the student government of UC Davis decided to endorse BDS in 2015, Barr tweeted, “I hope all the jews leave UC Davis & then it gets nuked,” adding, “#nukeUCDavisJewHaters.” According to Twitter receipts, Barr has experimented with straight-up Islamophobia, tweeting about “Islamic rape pedo culture” and sharing tweets that equate Islam and Nazism. Unsurprisingly, Barr’s less than P.C.—and often downright offensive—opinions have made her a number of virtual enemies, including Shaun King and Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour (Barr has gone so far as to tweet that “Linda Sarsour=David Duke”).
Then there’s the third category of Jew/Israel-centric Roseanne Barr opinions—those that are simply nonsensical. In August 2016, Barr went on a Twitter rant, writing, “hillary clinton is surrounded by jew haters who make fun of the holocaust & jewish suffering yet her mkultra supporters call Trump a bigot!” She also shared a link alleging that “jew hater hillary clinton’s handler huma weiner is a filthy nazi whore.” She concluded that, “Hillary will be the absolute death of Israel-she will sell #nukes to Hamas next if price is right [sic].” Just a few days ago, Barr took to Twitter to claim that, “No Jew can really speak truth anywhere…No Jew can truly speak as a Jew, yet. But, the time will come.”
Barr has described herself as mentally ill in the past. In a 2011 Oprah interview, she told Winfrey that, “I had, and still in some ways, have and always will have some mental illness,” explaining that she had been prescribed psychiatric drugs in the past—“And the drugs and the combination of drugs that I was given, which were some strong, strong drugs, I totally lost touch with reality in a big, big way.”

Not sure I see this as flopping around. Except for the Hitler-cookie stunt which I don’t get at all the rest seems quite extreme left. Atzmon’s book was smeared as anti- Semitic but was just an Israeli thinking out of the box and questioning Israel’s policies and Jewish conformism.
Actually the fact that she read and appreciated Atzmon shows that she was thinking and questioning...or one of her alters was. I haven’t any way of knowing for sure that Roseanne is MK programmed but the extreme nature of her left to right switch seems jarring.
Roseanne Barr’s fall was as righteous as it was inevitable
In her series-tanking tweet, the TV star—and avid spreader of bizarre, often anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about international pedophile rings conspiring with American civil servants to thwart Donald Trump—described Valerie Jarrett, a Black woman and senior advisor in the Obama White House, as the child of the “Muslim brotherhood & Planet Of The Apes.” That would seem to have been the straw that broke the network camel’s back, a camel that had shown remarkable, even super-camelean, fortitude up until that point.
Clearly, the weight of Roseanne having tweeted about another Black woman back in 2013—”Susan Rice is a man with big swinging ape balls,” she wrote—obviously didn’t make the camel break its stride; ABC signed her to do the show all the same. Roseanne’s penchant for spreading the theory that Hillary Clinton was at the centre of a cabal of cannibalistic pedophiles operating out of a Washington D.C. pizza joint should possibly have been taken as another indication that some kind of career-ending tweet was inevitable—but then, maybe her tweets were part of her appeal to a network said to have been worried it wasn’t locking down the “lock her up” demographic.
Roseanne’s long history of abject transphobia should also have been a clue that her triumphant return might end like this, much the way a taped confession of “I totally did it in the library with the candlestick, ask the professor, he saw everything” is a clue.
Roseanne details abuse by parents; levels new accusation
By ROGER BENNETT | Oct. 8, 1991
LOS ANGELES -- Comedian Roseanne Barr Arnold, embroiled in a bitter battle with her parents over her allegations of childhood sexual abuse, said Tuesday her father molested her daughter on the comedian's wedding day.
Arnold, 38, star of the popular ABC-TV sitcom 'Roseanne,' first went public with charges she had been molested by her father last month before a group of incest victims and therapists in Denver.
During a taping Tuesday of the 'Sally Jesse Raphael Show,' Arnold dropped another bombshell, accusing her father of molesting her daughter at Arnold's wedding.
'It was at my wedding in 1990 that my father molested my daughter, Jessica,' Arnold said. 'She didn't tell me for six months that he had done that at my wedding, which is why Tom and I got remarried,' referring to her and Tom Arnold having repeated their marriage vows.
The comedian said she began recalling the childhood incidents in 1980 when a sister revealed her own childhood abuse, but it was only two years ago while her husband was attending a drug rehabilitation program and discussed abuse he had suffered as child that her traumatic memories began to surface.
She recently wrote to her parents, Jerome and Heidi Barr of Salt Lake City to tell them she planned to reveal her childhood trauma. They did not respond.
However, since Arnold's public revelations, her parents have denied the allegations, and have announced they plan to sue People magazine for printing an article quoting Arnold about the alleged abuse.
'We're totally upset,' Jerome Barr said last month. 'I never touched my daughter... I never had any incestual relationships with her. '
The Barrs also have taken lie detector tests, their attorney Melvin Belli said, adding they both passed.
'They are not going to shut me up and I'm not going to stop,' Arnold said. 'Their lawyer said they took lie detector tests, which really craks me up because everybody knows you have got to have a conscience and feel some guilt to fail one, and they've never had either or they wouldn't have done any of it.'
Arnold said as a teenager her father would burst into the bathroom while she bathed to film her with his movie camera.
She also said her mother grabbed her by the hair on her 17th birthday and 'saying she wished I had died in the car accident the year before.'
Arnold said she has spent her adult life keeping her childhood trauma a secret, which she said drove her to 'torture' herself with drugs, alcohol and food.
'Keeping that secret is what my whole life has been about for 38 years,' she said recently. 'I did such a thorough job of keeping the secret that I didn't even know it myself until two years ago.'
She said her destructive behavior led her to smoke five packs of cigarettes a day, overeat, then diet and abuse drugs.
'I have lived the majority of my life in a flesh prison that I was always trying to blow up, break out of or whittle away,' she said.
Tom Arnold, appearing with his wife on the program, also disclosed he had been sexually abused as a child.
'I was 7 and he was 18,' Arnold said. 'He used to babysit me and it happened a lot. I was thinking -- being a guy, you always wonder, you don't want to tell anybody this happend to you. It did happen, and I want to confront the guy.'
