In yet another pathetic, evil decision, taken solely, it appears, to "own the libs", Trump has awarded the highest civilian honor America can bestow on Edwin Meese III, he of Iran-Contra, WedTech, "there's no such thing as an innocent suspect or a hungry child in America", resign-from-govt-under-a-cloud-of-corruption infamy.

Tom Barrack arranged a deal in 1980's to buy out Ron Reagan's AG Ed Meese's CA home at a premium.

A #FOIA story:

1. I sent FBI a FOIA request for specific FBI file numbers.
2. FBI refers it to @USAttorneys, calls it a court case, and closes it.
3. EOUSA denies the request for being unreasonably describe.
4. DOJ upholds appeal, noting the FBI file numbers aren't court case #s

Long time followers won't be surprised (@resentfultweet can already feel it in his bones, I'm sure) to learn that the file number came from an originally SECRET (and still partially classified) memo to the FBI Director about

[drumroll...]

The #PROMIS/Inslaw affair.

The case where:

* FBI lied to Congress about a journalist who died while investigating DOJ corruption

* FBI agents were afraid being honest would put their careers at risk

* Police manufactured evidence

* FBI withheld evidence

* DOJ can't decide if they lost the file or not

There was a brief window where I'd looked at the Inslaw affair deeply and thoroughly enough to see that a lot of it was noise and dead ends. The core of it remained questionable, but the evidence was inconclusive or relied on someone's word.

Then I looked at DOJ's handling of it

It is one of the most ridiculous, absurd, unbelievable stories I've ever heard. DOJ's handling of the case can only be explained two ways:

1. Either there was a deliberate cover up

or

2. People handling the case put buckets on their heads and hit them repeatedly with mallets

Example:

Casolaro's death was ruled a suicide, but the FBI interviewed the person considered most likely to be responsible if there was foul play. In the interview, he gave an alibi.

They interviewed him again. He gave a contradictory alibi.

DOJ forgot about the 1st interview.

Example:

Congress asked the FBI if they were investigating Casolaro's death. FBI said no.

Not only were FBI agents investigating it, a now declassified document shows at least half of them didn't accept the suicide conclusion but were afraid to say so.

Example:

A forensics expert examined the crime scene, autopsy and other evidence, concluding it was a suicide

It was later revealed evidence was withheld that, when shown, changed the expert's mind

Even later revealed the evidence including a "reenactment" made by the police

Example:

In response to a #FOIA request, FBI decided ~1,000 pages turned out to not be related to the request after all.

After I appealed, DOJ decided FBI hadn't found the files at all.

Example:

An Israeli spymaster was accused of visiting Inslaw under the name of a cooperative individual. He was later identified through photographs.

DOJ received a copy of the individual's passport which showed he wasn't in the U.S. at the time. DOJ decided it was him anyway.

Example:

The FBI had multiple informants offering information which appeared to corroborate the core allegations of the Inslaw affair, and to implicate the then-Attorney General Meese.

The DOJ left that out of their report. Wonder why.

Image

Example:

The hand-written notes made by first police on the scene describe specific statements from multiple witnesses saying they saw a briefcase which was allegedly stolen when Casolaro died.

DOJ had the notes sealed.

DOJ's report said witnesses denied seeing the briefcase.

Example:

One of Casolaro's sources worked at an NSA facility. He was killed and his body found days later in the back of a car in an airport parking lot.

DOJ said it was a mugging gone wrong, case closed.

20+ years later, FBI denies my #FOIA, citing b(7)A – pending case.

The FBI agents (who had TS clearance at minimum) investigating Casolaro's death in connection with BCCI asked the DOJ for an unredacted copy of their report on Casolaro's death in connection with BCCI.

DOJ said no.

Image

There's more, but the picture is already clear.

And now in response to a request for FBI files, FBI decides they're court files and DOJ denies them because they're not court files.

Because of course.

(Just to be 100% clear – descriptions of the government's behavior in the above tweets is based off of officially released government documents.)

Addendum for clarity:

The 6(e) here refers to the secrecy portion of the grand jury section of the federal rules of criminal procedure.

The secrecy portion of 6(e) includes several exceptions that applied to the FBI agents in question.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
