Quote:
The terrorists bought return rail tickets, and pay and display car park tickets, before boarding _ a train at Luton for London.

It would be interesting to know WHEN the return tickets were for. Was it an immediate turnaround (this would make it somewhat more plausible that they knew there were timers and that they'd have time to turn around and come back. Of course, it also supports the idea that they thought they were part of a drill. So far, no family members have been quoted as saying they'd mentioned taking part in a drill. Maybe they were told they had to keep it secret to make the test effective. Why do I put so much in parentheses? )

However, if they knew there were timers in the first place, you'd think they would be able to see how much time there was when they set them. Maybe real bombs don't have those visible counters like in all the movies. (Damn it! Do I cut the blue wire or the red wire next?) However, you'd think there would be some indicator on there in order to be able to set the time in the first place.

On the other hand, if their return ticket was for later in the day, clearly they could not have been aware they were carrying bombs at all. If they knew they were going to blow up trains, they would have known that return train service would be rather unlikely. And for a subway ride, a one way ticket is not at all suspicious, so there would be no need to buy round trip tickets to avert that suspicion.

Quote:
"We think it's possible they were told that when they pressed buttons to set off timers they'd have a short time to abandon the bombs and get away before the blast. Instead, the bombs exploded immediately."

Another bit of questionable logic. The very reason they suspected timers is that (unless I misunderstand) the bombs went off in such a synchronized fashion. Depending on the "bombers" to set the timers by hand is no different from simply having suicide bombers push the button at a certain time. In fact, come to think of it, I'm not sure why the idea of suicide bombers with reasonably synchronized watches was abandoned for the idea of timers in the first place.

Or are they trying to say the bombs were set for a particular time of day but didn't start "timing" until these guys pushed the button? Anyone seen any clarifications?
