I found the episode with Declan's Confederate soldier neighbor particularly wrenching--more so than the professional thugs graphically killing each other (except one particular young drug runner) and corrupt politicians betraying one another. IMHO, the show really 'gets' the characters in those Irish/Catholic neighborhoods, along with how family, crime, & politics intersect.
Declan's the character I find most 'deserving' of empathy....
