"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

The Sex Pistols at Winterland, Part 9. At exactly 4:10 you can see where I was crowd surfed onto the stage, bumping into Sid (he bonks a little note there - the bass is definitely on) and incurring his wrath. I proceeded at that point to launch into a spawning salmon wriggle, which seems to amuse John, and then the security dragged me off behind the band, where I pretended to be having a seizure. After the meds checked me, they let me watch the rest from backstage, a few feet from the show, and allowed me to have some drinks in the party room after the show with all the other fucks.

I mean if we're doing Sex Pistols bragging rights, I've at least got my pathetic few, and I may as well use 'em. As far as currency goes, it's pretty low on the totem pole, admittedly. I found a couple unused tickets thrown away outside on Steiner. The scalpers didn't have much business that night, frankly.

I had some friends in a band called The Sleepers who spent the rest of the night cruising for heroin with Sid. Veddy exclusive, you see.

On the contrary, I think most people who were there (certainly myself and the folks I came with) went into it and came away from it with the feeling that we were out to experience an "event" of some import, and that, no matter how "well" the band "played" (I mean, we're talking about a punk band, after all), we had certainly been somewhere that night. I believe anyone you might ask excepting the band and a few others would agree to that. And keep in mind that the Pistols were the headliners - there were two other bands that night, and not just any bands, either: The Nuns, in my opinion, the greatest San Francisco punk band of the era, and the Avengers, fronted by Penelope Houston, either of which I would have, and had before, shelled out the cigarette money of four dollars (!) to see.

I'd love to write a book or longish article about the surreal evening of the show, and someday maybe I will, but for now, the entire show, frustratingly minus the openers, is available on YouTube. And here is a decent clinical dissection of the show, for what that's worth.

That does seem like a rather truncated gestation!

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Good night!

Johnny Rotten, at the end of the last Sex Pistols concert, Winterland Theater, San Francisco, California (14 January 1978)

It figures nicely in The Filth and the Fury documentary.

EVERYBODY got cheated when it comes to the Pistols. Including the Pistols.

utterly glorious ( if rather daft & bombastic ) hymn to the space brothers by those wacky French UFO contactees in the Rael cult.

actually when they're not trying to clone Jesus from blood-spots on the Turin Shroud they're pretty musical.

I've never really thought she got as much credit as she deserved for what she brought to that band as a lyricist. Which was, basically: Something to say.

She's Scottish, you know. And hugely intelligent, charismatic, and sexy. Which is the same thing, I reckon.

And Barracuda was actually in the Winterland Ballroom when all that stuff happened in the Winterland Ballroom! As someone born two years later, who went seriously nuts on the Pistols in my teens, I think I'd actually be less gobsmacked if he'd posted proof that he'd been on the grassy knoll. Jesus. Famous people you've been in a bar with? Well, I posted next to Barra in the Saloon thread, and he was at fucking Winterland!

Song, for content:

EDIT: I fixed it, thanks to Peregrine, who knows how stuff gets done.

Thanks Peregrine. I PMed Barracuda, to learn the new technique on Youtubery, but he aint in. I know everyone has probably already discussed this, and you all know how it's done... but how's it done?

Well, when you click on a youtube vid, such as the one above, anything after the "v=" of the youtube link, you highlight & paste between these:

:)

And, if you get a "&feature..." at the end of the link, leave that out. Hope that makes sense... :D
