My favorite Mamet films, by far, are "Things Change" (hardly anyone seems to have watched it), which is a really charming wonderful movie (yes, a charming movie by Mamet), and "House of Games." I've watched "House of Games" quite a few times. It's so good. "Spanish Prisoner" I thought was terrible, it's like he was ripping himself off, trying to make another "House of Games" but failing miserably.

However the other day I watched "The Overnight" and found it a great funny ride. Really well directed and acted. And wonderfully outrageous.

Wait, you liked a Duplass Brothers film? I can't believe it!

They only produced it.

I should've known, since it was pretty good.

Probably why I liked it; I never get tired of sophisticated con-game themed films.

I tried to order 'Things Change' on Netflix, but it's on their increasingly endless list of 'saved but unavailable' films. :wallhead:

Bummer. I tried finding it somewhere a while back, probably to show my stepdaughter. She really liked House of a Games and wanted to see more Mamet movies. And she went to grade school with one of his kids. But we couldn't find it then either. Maybe it's in some legal limbo. I can't find True Lies anywhere online either. Fwiw.

Indeed, the endless borg archives of the Information Age have not lived up to the hype.

I maintain a foolishly doomed side quest trying to keep great films alive online, but I love romantically dumb side quests.

Nobody really cares about Uncle Boonmee anymore. That is perhaps a good thing; Pixar does such great work I don't think we really need those old movies anyway.

I wonder if anyone in Hollywood is developing a Canticle for Leibowitz adaptation...

Cartier Bresson hands down, eyes shut.
Only discovered after she died and that by
a miracle.

Late to the party, but wow . . 'Ex Machina' is tremendous. Wears its Kubrick influences on its sleeve yet way more than a terrestrial retelling of 2001' or a claustrophobic nod to 'The Shining', and at its best when it acknowledges those films in ways almost purely visual (the staging in the bunker hallway at the film's denouement is both subtle and shocking). One of the first great films of the 21st century. Am curious how the framing of its subtexts read to those unfamiliar with the themes upon which this narrative is structured.

I was amazed at how good it became as I was watching it. I almost didn't stick with it. By the end I was pretty shaken but exhilarated and pleased at how it turned out. I spent days thinking about it. And not just it, but other machines we've created (like out economic system).

Costa-Gavras film about the days leading up to and following the 1973 U.S. backed military coup in Chile, as seen through the eyes of a missing American's family :
