Machover presents his musical and technological expertise developed at MIT for a talk at TED dot com.
FROM YOUTUBE NOTES. Tod Machover of MIT’s Media Lab is devoted to extending musical expression for everyone—from virtuosi to amateurs, and in the most diverse forms—from opera to video games. At TED2008, he talks about what’s coming next, from new tools for music creativity to the world’s first robotic opera, Death and the Powers. Machover introduces Dan Ellsey, a young man with cerebral palsy, who has found his voice through music created and performed using Media Lab technologies.

Lexikon-Sonate, algorithmic music generator, is an interactive realtime compositional environment for live performances. Since 1985, the algorithms developed by composer, Karlheinz Essl, generate fascinatingly complex, nonrepetitive musical sequences, or structures.
The idea of autopoiesis—material organizing itself within certain constraints—employs numerous generators randomly controlling each other, creating, on the fly, variants differing sometimes dramatically from each other yet are perceptible inheritances unfolding realtime rather than replicating a conventional, fixed composition.
