Well, since I call the paramedics for a papercut...

...I guess it's a good thing I've never had kids.

As it happens, moaning, at least, has been found to be a physiological way of decreasing pain. That's, er, why people in pain moan.

I have read...read, mind you, like I said I have no first hand experience...that if someone is prepared for childbirth, relaxed (hard to do in a brightly lit hospital OR with masked people milling about), and in the proper position (squatting, not lying on their back as in hospital births), it's not supposed to be too bad. Unless there are complications, of course.

Now, again, what constitutes 'too bad' is an individual matter. My dad had a 12 cm ulcer and his only symptom was occasional burping--his doctor said he had to have had amazing pain tolerance.

All I know is if I WAS giving birth and my husband started telling me to stuff a sock in it, I'd kick him so hard in the nuts they'd hear him scream in the next state. If men had to go through childbirth humans would be as extinct as dodos and passenger pigeons.

Thanks for pointing out some resources on this intriguing topic. Avalon, I agree pushing out babies is about as beautiful and terrible as it gets. Reading LeBoyer's Birth Without Violence was an awesome, tearful experience. Midwives should wear crowns.

you can read the whole Jack Parsons story in the pseudonymously written biography "Sex and Rockets" by "John Carter"

www.amazon.com/gp/product...55&s=books

BTW I remember a newspaper story from the St Peterburg Times
in the '80's where it was found out that church members were
ensuring LRH's Battlefield Earth novels were making it onto the NYT bestseller lists by going out and buying mass quantities.
-They got busted selling the same stock back to the distributors,
it seems that they forgot to take off the B Dalton bookstore tags
before re-shipping them!

The difference

Postby Avalon » Sat Nov 26, 2005 2:11 am

As it happens, moaning, at least, has been found to be a physiological way of decreasing pain. That's, er, why people in pain moan

That's where the difference lies in consciously choosing how and when to make sound as a way of dealing with what happens, compared to just reacting and having sounds come out involuntarily.

When I wallop my finger with a hammer, I may yell out an involuntary "Bloody hell!" like anybody else. But I've learned that my pain is better handled right after by consciously employing the same breathing techniques I learned for birthing.

Big difference between handling pain randomly vs consciously is the consequences.

It's not really going to matter in the long run how somebody handles the pain of smashing her finger. But if you are being tossed around wildly by the pain of birthing, rather than surfing it with whatever skill and grace you can muster, it's going to make you less likely to relax. Being uptight will make the process longer and the pains harder, and that's not good for either you or your baby.

Having techniques that you've been taught beforehand helps. Having a birth attendant who can help you reframe your perspectives in a way that makes you feel stronger and more capable than you thought you could be helps. Realizing that you can take pretty much anything for 60-90 seconds at a time helps an enormous amount.

FWIW, I was really pleased to find that for all its intensity and occasional discomfort, birthing was not as painful for me as a root canal or bad UTI.

Regarding "John Carter" -- has his identity ever been conclusively established? Or are there some good guesses?

goats

Postby jenz » Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:02 am

any overly prescriptive treatment of childirth process annoys me. just as much those who smugly gave birth naturally, no problems, no pain killers, squatting, standing on their heads or swimming, as men laying down the law about what their wife will or will not do. check out the number of ways other species (say goats) can get into difficulties. what one woman and her child needs is not necessarily a guide for all.

scientology is evil. lower levels don't get to find that out, unless they try to leave prematurely. star system is bad, and most of what it produces is rubbish.

Experience vs. theory

Postby Avalon » Sat Nov 26, 2005 12:38 pm

So sorry to have annoyed you by talking about my experiences, and by presenting links to medical information.

But hey, isn't it wonderful that the Internet is a place where everybody can spout off their opinions about things they don't know diddly squat about?
