scientology in Israel

The week's haaretz features an odd story about a generous 150 million $ donation given this month (remember the elections in March) to the municipality of Tel aviv by the USA-Scientology org, for the purpose to applying Narcanon, the detox program for addicts, with sauna treatment. Tel Aviv municipality took the money and committed to applying the program on the clients of the welfare department. (article in Hebrew edition).Haaretz questions the decision made by Mayor Ron Huldai (retired IDF general, as well) to accept the deal from a very questionable cult. The mayor's office dismissed the claims, saying that the saunas have nothing to do with the spiritual contents of the cult.

I wrote a post about it (using also links to jeff's blog), and found the guardian from last november on same issue. In england, not only did the establishment refuse to adopt the program as its own but they consider making it illegal for Narcanon to send letters to inmates, proposing this program privately.
---
Another "donation" story this week, is the attack on Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron HUldai, who accepted a 20 million $ donation from local tycoon Sammi Offer (owner of Zim, Israeli shipping corp; El Al; Dead Sea chemical and many more former government owned corps) to Tel Aviv municipal art museum. Offer made his donation on condition that the museum change its name from Tel Aviv Museum to Sammi and Aviva Offer Museum. The mayor signed the deal, and the name was already changed, despite public outcry. This week, however, someone leaked the content of the "donation agreement" wherein, the Donor requests a Lean to be registered in the Lands Registrar, making it impossible to make any changes in the ownership (or any other transaction, rental etc.) of the museaum land, without Offer's consent. As a result of the publication in haaretz, the donor withdreaw the deal, took the money and ran away...later, he bought a whole page in Haaretz where he writes a public letter, complaining that he could not bear anymore the smears and the evil comments, and therefore he rescinds.

One victory on the money sharks...
