It would be stupid of Tom or any other man to eat the placenta, just like it would be stupid for him to snarf down a handful of female birth control pills.<br><br>I have one friend who ate her placenta, raw mixed in a blender with tabasco and V8. She said it tasted somewhat livery. I've participated in a couple of rituals where the placentas were ritually buried, and the babies were given their first taste of non-mother's milk food, as a way of honoring that first small step of independence and separation from wholly depending on the mother. The placentas had been rinsed and then frozen until the ceremony.<br><br>From what I've read over the years, that the cetaceans and pinnipeds can swim away from their placentas instead of eating them gives more credence to the idea that they are eaten to minimize attractiveness to predators.
