Scientology: Roots & Offshoots

Postby timboucher » Thu Jun 30, 2005 1:58 pm

I don't know if everybody's tired of Scientology-talk yet, but I'm not. The thing I'm finding most interesting about it is how much it connects into other groups and movements. One of the things I've been working on at my site the most is putting together info about all the offshoots of Scientology. So far I've got:

Process Church
Eckankar
Landmark Forum

I'm also working on some stuff about Synanon, Narconon and Criminon. And I want to do some further investigation into the Human Potential movemet and LGAT's. It seems too that a lot of New Age groups either directly or indirectly draw their influence from Scientological ideas.

I also want to get into looking more at the roots of where Hubbard got his ideas. Everybody's heard the Crowley connection by now, but not being a Thelemite, I'm having trouble getting a handle on just what he "stole" from the OTO, conceptwise. There's also the area of Korzybski and General Semantics, which seems like a huge influence. All the writing on it though is really obtuse.

Oh, one other thing I came up with that I thought was interesting was a description of some of the Scientology TR's (training routines). I'd also like to do an extensive comparison of Joseph Smith and L. Ron Hubbard. But I don't know the first thing about Mormonism.

Does anybody have any good ideas for further leads in these areas?

Glad you're on it, Tim. Scientology has so many offshoots, cut-outs and fronts, it gives me a sick headache.

I think comparing Smith and Hubbard would make an interesting study. Both started out as skryers (not sure if Smith was using Enochian magick, but Hubbard was), and both were scoundrels, but I think there was more going on at the founding of Mormonism and Scientology than a simple con game.

Me too. I think the number one problem with Scientology research is that everybody is focused on "exposing" it as a cult. I'm becoming less and less interested in that, and more interested in it as this humongous nexus of occultism and cultural theory for the past century. It's almost like Hubbard sucked up everything from like 1900-1950 and turned it into Dianetics. And then from 1950-onward it all got spurted back out into all these subgroups and offshoots. It's freaking nuts.

And like you said, while he may have been a consummate con-man, he also freaking studied like crazy, was influenced by just about everybody, and figured out a concrete system which actually has *effects* on people, whether or not they are positive.

I have to admit that I hadn't delved much into the C.S.T. etc.,until 'the firm'. so thanks for that Jeff. after following the links, particularly to 'planet veritas',
www.sc-i-r-s-ology.pair.c...st-cia.htm and beyond, I found I just sat back and exclaimed 'oh my ...'. I seriously doubt it's just a case of switching "Jungian psychology ... slickly packaged ... to the gullible public" so as to "keep the real stuff for themselves" but I agree that the whole story and all its machinations are most worthy of some serious study.
I concur with antiaristo that "something happened in June", but that it's much more than the memo/minutes/Milbank moment. (reading through which I found myself humming the 'hokey-pokey' - "you put your right foot in; you put your right foot out; you put your right foot in and you shake it all about ...") I've been wondering over the past few days if we're not watching the wee beastie in the process of morphing. hot on the heels of Tom's recent "we're not alone" announcement comes www.rense.com/general66/cave.htm
oh ohh ... watch out for the hairpin bend. but even I have to give them ten points for trying on this one.
