Major tsunami damage in northern Japan

The Associated Press
Friday, March 11, 2011; 1:28 AM

TOKYO -- Japanese television has shown major tsunami damage in northern Japan on Friday, following a magnitude-7.9 earthquake.

Public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TOKYO (AP) - Japan was struck by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and prompting a tsunami warning.

Japan's meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 20 feet (6 meters) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter. Smaller tsunamis of up to 50 centimeters reached some coastal communities, the agency said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and U.S. state of Hawaii.

The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the meteorological agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

Footage on national broadcaster NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.

Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.

Ditto for Hawaii. Tsunami-wise, that is.

Tsunami watch issued after Japan earthquake

EWA BEACH (HawaiiNewsNow) -- A Tsunami Watch has been issued for the state of Hawaii following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan.

Scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said that based on available data, a tsunami may have been generated by the quake. They said the earliest that tsunami waves could reach Hawaii would be at 2:59 a.m. Friday.

Warning sirens gone off here on the coast of Hawaii 5 hours before potential wave due. I'm up at around 700 feet .

Meanwhile in nz my parents are still shitting in a bucket at what's left of their place after an earthquake.
Interesting times.

Whew, I count 17 aftershocks 5.7-6+ in less than 3 hours since the major jolt. This is so horrible.

the awesome strength of that tsunami is mind-boggling....this may be some of the best footage we've seen, due to the tsunami happening in a technologically advanced country....prayers for those poor people....and I hope the rest of the countries around the pacific rim escape damage

Fucking horror, I tell you.... it's just so hard to watch.... I feel sick.... It's probably the worst thing I've seen, those aerial shots of the huge waves just eating everything up in their path at tremendous speed. You see cars driving down highways while the huge wave of horror approaches. Absolute terror. I'm so sad and scared for everyone in the affected regions.

CNN International is doing a decent job covering the tsunami's pending world-wide affect, IMO.

This just could be the straw that breaks the "global economy's" back. All Japanese ports closed. There will be shockwaves in trading and preliminary propaganda. One hour till the NY stock exchange opens. Let's see what happens at the outset. Watch your western news to see how "shock doctrine" applies in this case.

That said, dead, I would imagine in the tens to approaching hundreds of thousands. Our American news bureaus are going to run out of correspondents as they're all in the ME and north Africa.

Best of luck, my friends in Japan. :(
