we could always skip the conference and go straight to standoff.

no but seriously, are people talking about a real conference, with registration fees and guest speakers, etc? or something simpler?

Should be held on a train. Moving from one place to another. A moving target.

More like the original Russian communist party meetings. I call dibs on Bolsheviks!

I do believe that conferences cost dough, juice, the green fluff, up front, like say to reserve conference rooms and such. I think that may be the grease that might light a fire in the requisite places.

Also, didn't our host say he wanted to host the first annual, as it should be? I want to be clear however, if I go to Canada, I'm not coming back. It's OK Jeff, I'll bring my own cot.

Pulease correct me where I may be mistaken.

Otherwise, I vote for Detroit, where I could lead a very interesting tour of certain underground landmarks. Second choice, New York, but good goddess not in the summer.

Thanks for bumping the thread. And don't think the idea hasn't been baking in my thinkbox all this time. Though, to be honest, not much progress has been made in the practical sense. (Though I did toss out a tentative query to Daniel Hopsicker, who said he'd be up for it.)

I know there is space I could book in Toronto, but I'd hate, for pride if nothing else, to book a hall when a booth in a diner would suffice. So I don't know how many to plan for, or even how to go about anticipating the numbers or cost. Or just about anything else.

I've also thought a US site would probably mean a better attendance, so I'm not ruling that out. It would need to be east-ish, though.

Unless you are clear about specific goals you want the conference to achieve it will turn into another psychological soup kitchen
for the political down and out .

Chicago or Denver? I doubt I could go to Canada as I've let my passport lapse. Hell, I doubt I can even go at all. It would all depend on the stipends Jeff promised to cough up some time ago along with our blogs.

Eh. Not necessarily. I don't think this would have or has to have anything to do with any kind of "goals" or "achievement". The best things come from just shooting from the hip.

finally! a chance to hammer out a good manifesto!

well, honestly, I doubt I'll be into traveling, so I probably wouldn't be able to attend.

maybe it would be good to find some way other than a conference to allow a lot of people to contribute to some project, that would be designed to somehow reach out...

what about putting together a script for a documentary? something that would perhaps offset the questionable content out there (like ZEITGEIST? I don't know maybe some people like it. it's got good points, but lot's of questionable content. I haven't seen the sequels either)

I'm sure that would go extremely smoothly!

In early May I'll be in Costa Rica looking for a place to live.

Let's do it there!

How about one full-day, one-track conference, with meetups the day/night before and social events the night of, with room to extend it into late-night hotel room after-party-ness. Jeff should get a suite and plenty of sleep beforehand, because we're keeping him up (and F'ed up) all night, I wager.

So that's one day for the conference hall (including coffee and lunch service, which is like the concession stand at the movie theater -- it's where they really make their money), and two nights at a group rate from some attached/nearby hotel.

Or...

We rent out some desperate old Masonic hall and make their poor wives feed us on the cheap!

Thoughts?
