Judge denies bail for Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell

A federal judge has denied bail to Ghislaine Maxwell, who pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges brought earlier this month that allege she conspired with billionaire Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse underage girls. Maxwell's trial is scheduled to begin July 12, 2021.

The latest: In handing down her ruling, Judge Alison Nathan said "the risks are simply too great" and ordered Maxwell to be jailed pending trial. Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York called Maxwell an "extreme flight risk" whose "significant and unexplained wealth" and lack of ties to the U.S. give her few reasons not to attempt to flee the country.

Prosecutors told the judge that the British socialite has more than $10 million in assets, including at least $4 million in a Swiss bank account.

Maxwell's counsel expressed concern that time in prison could put the 58-year-old at risk of contracting the coronavirus and proposed she serve her pretrial detention in a luxury Manhattan hotel, according to the Miami Herald's Julie Brown, whose reporting in 2018 led to charges against Epstein.

The big picture: Maxwell has been held without bail since she was arrested on July 2 in an FBI raid of her remote New Hampshire estate, where she had been hiding out.

Prosecutors say that Maxwell ignored a request to open her door and tried to flee to another room of the house, forcing the FBI agents to bust in.

The virtual hearing on Tuesday took place exactly one year since a federal judge denied Epstein bail after he was charged with sex crimes. Epstein was found hanged in his cell in an apparent suicide shortly after.

What to watch: Maxwell is facing six charges that could amount to up to 35 years in prison. She is likely to be pitted against many of the same victims and witnesses Epstein would have faced, had he ever made it to trial.

She tried to flee to another room!

Cognitive dissonance overload. She's rich, so bad things can't really happen to her, so it's perfectly logical to "hide" in the country that wants to arrest her until the bad thing goes away (like it always has up until now), and when the bad thing came to her doorstep she couldn't process it because that's just not supposed to happen.

She could be a textbook case. And, there’s a lot to glean about Ghislaine from her being the entitled, pet child of a risk-taking, unconscionable, insatiable father (who died mysteriously). Her partnering with Epstein almost seems like a step down were he not so amoral & promiscuous himself.

Who is the real Robert Maxwell? The domineering media baron and father of Ghislaine |

Ben Macintyre shines light on the real Robert Maxwell, the The historian grew up not far from the Maxwells and in an article for the Times, he remembers the young Ghislaine, who was raised cowering beneath the shadow of an oppressive, overbearing fathermedia baron and father of Ghislaine

In these past weeks and months, so much has been written about Ghislaine Maxwell. The girl with glittering social connections, who allegedly introduced Jeffrey Epstein to Prince Andrew and in 2002, as a guest of the Duke of York, frolicked in the Buckingham Palace throne room alongside actor – recently at the centre of his own storm of sexual assault allegations – Kevin Spacey. It’s easy to forget that she was once a daughter, an innocent girl, before life well and truly spun beyond her control.

Historian Ben Macintyre knew Ghislaine Maxwell as a child in the 1970s, and remembers her very clearly. His sister, an exact contemporary, would attend her opulent birthday parties at the Maxwell residence, a 53-room Italianate mansion, where Oscar Wilde supposedly once danced with Lady Ottoline Morrell, and with grounds furnished with a swimming pool and a tennis court. For an article in the Times, Macintyre paints a picture of a gilded youth charred by the tyrannical presence of her overbearing father, the newspaper baron Robert Maxwell.

Macintyre describes her as ‘an unlikely figure of glamour among the dons’ daughters’ at Oxford High School, their mutual alma mater. Macintyre remembers that she was ‘envied, admired, teased for her money, and mocked for her slow reading’. He writes that Robert Maxwell would often invite his daughter’s classmates up to the hall to take part in reading competitions, and she was declared winner every time (regardless of how beautifully the other girls read). The story is notable for the fact that it was not Ghislaine who invited her classmates round, but her father.

Ghislaine was the ninth child of Robert Maxwell, the renowned media tycoon and even the stimulus for a protagonist in Jeffrey Archer’s The Fourth Estate, that chronicled the lives of two complicated fictional media barons based on Maxwell and Rupert Murdoch. Macintyre states that, of course we can’t possibly have an inkling of what life was really life for Ghislaine growing up at Headington Hill Hall, their opulent dwelling, but we can make an informed guess. He alludes to ‘the combination of luxury and cruelty’. ‘Bob would shout and threaten and rant at the children until they were reduced to pulp,’ Betty Maxwell allegedly said of her husband following his death, the Times includes.

A source told me how he was an unlikely choice (since he had never met the Maxwells) to be roped in as an extra to bulk out a birthday party thrown for one of the older Maxwell sons who had returned after years living away. He said what a glamorous, generous affair it was, lobster, champagne et al. But it was the next day, over breakfast, that he watched Robert Maxwell tirelessly, relentlessly barking at his sons which made for difficult viewing.

Image
Robert Maxwell at a party on his yacht with Ghislaine and his wife Elisabeth in 1990

Maxwell delighted in Ghislaine, she was the cherished child; hers was reportedly the only family photograph on display in his penthouse office. In return, she worshipped him. He gave her Oxford United football club to run and in 1986, she was summoned to a Dutch shipyard to pop a bottle of champagne and name his new yacht, the Lady Ghislaine.

On Robert Maxwell’s death, when he was found floating in the sea off the Canary Islands in 1991, Ghislaine was the one child who flew to Tenerife to manage the bleak paperwork. She claimed that he had not commit suicide but had been murdered.

Macintyre met her again at a party in New York in the early 1990s, when she was rebuilding her life. He claims she seemed much as before, only this time, she was linked with Jeffrey Epstein, ‘another dodgy millionaire’. Macintyre concludes saying: ‘Looking back, life in the Versailles on the hill above Oxford was not lucky or enviable, but the very worst childhood that money could buy.’

As Ghislaine Maxwell is due to appear in court today, for accusations she strongly denies, will justice finally be served? Macintyre suggests that perhaps her father will be in the dock with her, maybe facing his own form of justice at last.

Anyway, she has a lot of dirt she could spill on some dangerous people. Who really knows where she is—under lock and key in a Brooklyn jail or holed up in some European castle owned by the Windsor Family?

This is slightly odd.

A week or so ago ID channel on satellite TV premiered a three 1 hour segments on Jeffery Epstein. Did not watch then but there is an option where one can save programs to watch later (which I did). The ID channel is very popular with true crime fans.

Today's program guide for the satellite channel shows the three shows to replay this evening starting at 6 PM PST and repeating 9 PM to midnight. So I tuned in and there was another program showing, not Epstein related. I checked the program guide and the three Epstein remained in that time slot and the program actually on TV not mentioned. So looked at the program detail and the 3 segments were listed but also that they were not available. Checked the programs I had recorded and they remained and play (maybe the technology saves them on the receiver? I do not know).

Maybe just a glitch today but what it reminded me of was the pretty good BBC program on Prince Andrew and Epstein that was widely available for a brief time and then gone from the internet or at least the internet I see).

So this may be never mind.

‘Anti-Feminist’ Is Identified as Suspect in Killing of Son of Federal Judge in N.J.

Officials believe that Roy Den Hollander, a lawyer whose body was found in upstate New York, fired shots into the home of Judge Esther Salas.

A lawyer who was a self-described anti-feminist was identified by federal authorities as the gunman who shot into the New Jersey home of a federal judge, killing her son and wounding her husband.

New York State Police found the lawyer’s body in upstate New York, near the town of Liberty, on Monday morning, hours after the shooting late Sunday afternoon at the home of the judge, Esther Salas of Federal District Court in New Jersey. The authorities believe that the lawyer died from a self-inflected gunshot wound, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter.

Federal authorities said the lawyer was Roy Den Hollander, who in 2015 brought a lawsuit before Judge Salas that challenged the male-only military draft.

The class-action lawsuit accused the Selective Service System, the independent government agency that maintains a database of Americans eligible for a potential draft, of violating women’s equal protection rights by requiring only men to register with the service. Judge Salas ruled that the lawsuit could proceed, and the case is ongoing.

Mr. Den Hollander had also sued nightclubs for offering ladies’ night discounts and Columbia University for offering courses on women’s studies.

As part of the investigation into the lawyer’s death, the police found a package that was addressed to Judge Salas, according to another law enforcement official briefed on the matter.

“There’s a pretty good level of confidence he’s the guy,” the official said.

Federal and local authorities had been carrying out an intense search on Monday for the gunman, canvassing the neighborhood while looking for witnesses and surveillance video, according to law enforcement officials.

The authorities believe that somebody dressed in a FedEx uniform was in the neighborhood around the time of the shooting, but it could not be determined if that person was the gunman, one of the officials said.

Judge Salas was in the basement when the shots were fired and was not injured. The shooting occurred at her home in North Brunswick, N.J., which is about 40 miles southwest of New York City.

The New York State Police were notified about 8:15 a.m. on Monday about the lawyer’s body, which was found about a two-hour drive from the judge’s home. Federal investigators were examining the lawyer’s car for any evidence and set up a crime scene near the location where his body was found, according to a law enforcement official.

The judge’s husband, Mark Anderl, 63, was shot multiple times and on Monday was in the hospital in stable condition, according to Carlos Salas, an older brother of the judge. Their son, Daniel Anderl, 20, died from a gunshot wound to the heart.

In an interview, Mr. Salas described an account of the shooting that he said was provided to him by federal authorities. The judge’s husband was at home on Sunday afternoon when he looked out the window and thought he saw a FedEx deliveryman. After the doorbell rang, the couple’s son opened the door and was shot. When the older Mr. Anderl went over to see what happened, he was also shot.

Mr. Salas said his sister ran upstairs from the basement when she heard a scream and the gunshots.

The family does not know why the shooting occurred, but Mr. Salas said that either Judge Salas or her husband, a criminal defense lawyer, might have been the intended victims.

“We don’t know if she was the target or he was the target,” Mr. Salas said.

Daniel Anderl, their only child, was about to start his junior year at Catholic University of America in Washington.

“It’s surreal,” Mr. Salas said. “He was a vibrant, young, good-looking man. He had so much promise.”

The F.B.I. had been conducting the investigation with the U.S. marshals and local authorities. A spokesman for FedEx said in a statement that the company was “fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation.”

On Monday morning, yellow crime scene tape surrounded the judge’s property as television trucks clogged the street. A white BMW X5 was parked in the family’s driveway.

The authorities have not disclosed any possible motive behind the shooting.

Judge Salas presided over a wide range of cases. Last week, she was assigned to oversee a class-action lawsuit filed by a group of investors against Deutsche Bank, contending that the firm failed to flag questionable transactions that were made from the account of the financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died last August while in jail awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

In 2014, she sentenced two married stars of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” television show to prison time after the couple pleaded guilty to fraud charges. In 2016, she also sentenced a heroin supplier for the Grape Street Crips Gang to 15 years in prison.

Judge Salas, 51, is the first Hispanic woman to serve as a federal judge in New Jersey. President Barack Obama nominated her to the United States District Court for New Jersey in 2010. She had previously served as a magistrate judge and an assistant federal public defender.

Her son, Daniel Anderl, was interested in following in his parents’ footsteps and pursuing a legal career, according to the judge’s brother.

Daniel Anderl played on the club golf team at Catholic University and made the dean’s list this past spring.

In a letter published on Catholic University’s website on Monday, President John H. Garvey offered his condolences and said the school’s chaplain would celebrate Mass that evening for Daniel Anderl and his family.

“He was fiercely proud of his family and loved being at Catholic U, as he often told me,” Amy Petrovich Kerr, associate dean of students and director of residence life, said in a statement. “I cannot find words to describe what his loss means for us, but am sure that for his friends, his memory and legacy will serve as a blessing.”

Daniel Anderl graduated from St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, N.J., in 2018. In a statement, the school called him “a true friend, a proud Falcon, and an overall wonderful human being.”

He played as a left-handed pitcher on St. Joseph’s baseball team, said Nick Loffredo, 21, a teammate and former captain of the team.

“Even if we weren’t in season, he was still playing, he was still practicing,” Mr. Loffredo said.

Judge Salas met her husband when he was a prosecutor in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, according to a 2018 profile of her in New Jersey Monthly. “We’ve been inseparable since 1992,” she told the publication.

After a decade as a prosecutor, Mark Anderl became a criminal defense lawyer and co-founded the law firm Anderl & Oakley P.C. The firm represents clients facing charges that range from drunken driving to murder, according to its website.

Funny that commentators are focusing on "Russia!" — but Kroll leapt out at me.

This could go any number of directions. Patsy with a legend comes to mind.

Looks to me like Hollander was a planned patsy that was murdered.

Classic kill the assassin to cover the trail.

Has there been anything yet in MSM about Salas being the assigned judge in the Deutsch Bank-Epstein doings?

Take it down a notch, Elvis. All he did there was "manage and upgrade delivery of intelligence and security" for a year. Seem pretty standard fare for an "anti-feminist" NY lawyer's career path after all....... /s
