Shaver might well have been totally insane, he was apparently in an asylum during the time he claimed he spent sojourning in the subterranean realm, but I don't think he was a hoaxer. RAP might have been, certainly Keel blamed him for the whole of modern Ufology, back when flares were modern trousers. Him and Shaver were often rumoured to disagree, RAP "editing" RSS's work into a more publishable, arguably less obviously delusional, form. Still, don't bad mouth the Rok-Fogo.

Agreed, I don't actually consider Shaver to have been a hoaxer per se.

Ray Palmer on the other hand ... well, per my previous comments about hoaxing-personas, I always thought most folks understood his pubs were scifi-pulp-fiction.

Then again, there are always folks who gulp down "fiction" hook, line and stinker.

Thanks for the link to that story SM.

It reminds me of the controversy created when a friend of mine described Ray Palmer as the father of ufology. He was taken to task by many in the field who were offended and consider J. Allen Hynek to be the said deity / lead clergy.

I think it was from this article here ... which caused a lot of controversey for other reasons as well:

UFO ABDUCTIONS AND RACE FEAR
by Steven Mizrach

...

One of the early theories about UFOs was that they were craft piloted by Nazis who had fled after WW II and made contact with this race within the hollow earth (an idea that Ray Palmer, UFOlogy's "father," often assented to.)

Palmer's publication was also the place Crisman claimed to have been into the hollow earth, Palmer was the one who called Arnold into Crisman's Maury Island thing and Palmer is suspected of sending the anonymous letter accusing Crisman of involvement in the JFK killing (as is Crisman).

Merlin, Arthur, UFOs, and Mac Tonnies
...

But his note spurred me to look into the Arthurian legend, again.

That much of the legend is immersed in, near, or within water, Arthur’s story took me to Ivan Sanderson’s thesis that UFOs may derive from bases in and under the oceans of the world, which brings me to Mac Tonnies conjecture, in Cryptoterrestrials, that a concomitant civilization to our obvious civilization has thrived for millennia and may account for UFO sightings over the years.

Mac’s hypothesis leaves much to be desired, but along with Sanderson’s ideas and legends such as that of Arthur the King, and the fish-god Oannes who came from the sea to enhance early Babylonians, one has to consider the possibility that UFOs may come from underwater bases or a civilization evolved within the waters of the Earth.

What’s interesting to me, however, is that abduction tales never have anyone taken down into waters but, rather, up into the sky.

If UFOs do come from the seas – a big IF I grant you – one would think that the beings who are allegedly abducting people would take them downward, into the watery depths instead of upwards, into the heavens.
