And has there even been such a gaggle of fourth-rate poltroons, of shallow, witless, gormless goobers as the leaders of the "developed" world these days? Sarkozy, Cameron, Merkel, Berlusconi, Obama ....? It's like the last tribal council on Easter Island. All they have left are lies, delusions -- and brutality.

Oakland Police Riot: The Imperial Boardroom Strikes Back

I had the honor of talking with Cindy Sheehan tonight, recording an interview for her radio show, which I believe will air on Sunday. She made mention of the "police riot" -- as she aptly phrased it -- in Oakland Tuesday night, as a Democratic administration moved in with gas and other weapons of war to clear the streets of American citizens taking part in the Occupy movement.

Ms. Sheehan also noted the fact that the Occupy movement's terminology about "the 99 percent vs. the 1 percent elite" is not entirely accurate; far too many of the 99 percent are serving as willing tools of the 1 percent -- in the police forces, in the media, even in the general public, where you can always find plenty of people eagerly genuflecting to the high and mighty, even as they and their own families and communities sink deeper into the mire.

The Oakland debacle is a prime example of this, as cops -- putative public servants whose pay scales put them deep into the 99 percent -- waded into the Occupy citizens, breaking heads and driving away the very people trying to stand up for their interests.

The New York Times reports on one victim of these first strike-backs by our panicky overlords. And he is a most telling victim indeed: a military veteran, who had served two tours in the imperial war of aggression in Iraq, then turned against the War Machine and joined that stalwart band of humanity's patriots, the Iraq Veterans Against the War: (See original for links and video.)

Two veterans groups say that a protester who was badly wounded in Oakland on Tuesday night is a former marine who is now hospitalized with a fractured skull.

According to Iraq Veterans Against the War, the protester, Scott Olsen, is a member of their group who left the Marines in 2010, after serving two tours in Iraq. In a statement, the group's executive director Jose Vasquez, claimed that Mr. Olsen "sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march," on Tuesday night. Mr. Vasquez added that Mr. Olsen, a systems network administrator in Daly, Calif. "is currently sedated at a local hospital awaiting examination by a neurosurgeon."

A series of bloody photographs that appear to show Mr. Olsen after he was wounded were posted on the San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center's site, Indybay.org. Those images show that Mr. Olsen was wearing a brown military shirt with his last name on the front. Jay Finneburgh, the photographer who shot the images of Mr. Olsen, wrote on Indybay: "This poor guy was right behind me when he was hit in the head with a police projectile. He went down hard and did not get up. The bright light in the second shot is from a flash-bang grenade that went off a few feet from us. He looks like he might be a veteran. he was eventually taken to highland hospital." ....

We will see more, much more of this. You can smell the fear in the boardrooms (and in their bought-and-paid-for extensions, the government offices) around the world, as our mighty statesfolk flail at the global economic meltdown their own policies have unleashed -- with no other answer than to keep imposing "austerity" measures, one after another, destroying the societies they've feasted upon for so long.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

I totally understand where they're coming from, but I really hope that this doesn't end up like when the Hell's Angels did "security" at Altamont.

More and more, this whole thing is seeming like the opening rounds of a full-on civil war.

Thanks Bruce -- best news I've heard so far this week.

Assuming they're connected to Occupy Marines, they should be there to stand in non-violent solidarity, as a debt of honor to Sgt. Thomas and/or in honor of Scott Olsen. If this is the case, then their mission is likely to peacefully shame the police by their very presence into standing-down as necessary, as in the case of Sgt. Thomas.

In that scenario, there can't be too many of them. I'd like to see a security perimeter of righteous local marines surround each occupation facing out like human barbed wire fence.

The potential for full-on civil war will be there, but it's really difficult to imagine even the most shortsighted of police chiefs taking aggressive action against a group that's obviously under the protection of fucking marines. That would take other fucking marines, and while I've always kind of wondered, I doubt even JSOC would be able to compel ground forces to go against other marines in such a scenario.

It's going to take a truly dastardly provocation. Or a very large-scale distraction. THAT concerns me more at this point, because we know they'll do it, and nobody has to lose face because, well, "these things just happen".

It's like something straight out of an Alan Moore graphic novel. All it's missing is a ubiquitous dirigible hanging in the distant sky behind the cop.

In regard to Marines coming in, from what I heard last night, the Marines will be showing up. I also heard that the Marine who told Hannity (by camera recording) to 'fuck off', and the yelling Marine (Thomas) were leading the March last night to Union Square (NYC).

.

Pravda never, never, never did better than that. No way. The headline takes the factually correct lead ("Police carry out unprovoked massive live-fire assault on protester encampments") and turns it into a variant of "dirty hippies getting on respectable peoples' nerves."

But nothing tops that caption. Once they've been head-cracked and hog-tied and piled in the back of a copper van, the liceriddenanarchodruggydeviants also get blamed for "leaving behind" the poor kitty kat!!!

KAT-HATING DIRTYHIPPIES!!! AAAAAAAA! Will anyone adopt Puss-in-Boots?!!! Halp!

All that's missing is an editorial urging the police to bill the arrested parties for the cost of the teargas and flashgrenades. I'm sure Jennifer Rubin will provide it.

Here's a caption that would have about as much truth value, in the context: "A police officer in Oakland, CA, lures a kitty-kat prior to snatching it for mandated pest-disposal in his paddywagon Cuisinart." Ah, the magic you can work with still photos!

Michael Shaw's take
http://www.bagnewsnotes.com/2011/10/occ ... d-kittens/
Maybe the question is: what’s occupying the media?

I don’t think I need to say a whole lot about this juxtaposition from Tuesday’s hammer-fisted de-Occupation in Oakland except to say this is an excruciating example of what happens when the media’s worst “human interest” instincts meet the highest and grittiest calling of the Fourth Estate meets the tug of the corporate state (to the extent news functions all-too-well as cultural anesthesia).

The screen shot comes from a photo gallery at the Oakland Tribune. The snapshot below it, from a post at Washington City Paper (“Oakland Police Love Kittens, Teargas“) is a snapshot of page 3 of the Washington Post. Notice, by the way, how the caption, as it emulsifies with the photo and directs a blast of humanity toward the Oakland PD, is a forceful FU to Occupy across-the-board.

(Here, by the way, is the photo from Oakland that I almost used.)

Occupy Oakland update:

Last night we retook the plaza. Barriers erected around the plaza had signs on them urging us to respect the grass and allow the city to help the plaza heal and regenerate or some hippie BS equal to that. Because that's why they sent in 500 riot cops... to protect the grass. Anyways, the barriers were dismantled and the adorable mob stacked them into neat piles, sorted by type. A general assembly was held which among other things called for a general strike on November 2nd. Although this may seem rather rushed to some, it seems as though the Longshoremen may have already agreed to join in. If this turns out to be true, California's ports, which handle nearly 50% of the imports into the U.S. will be shut down. Thousands of occupiers then joined in a victory march through the streets of the city before returning to the plaza around midnight. Riot cops and regular police were present in large numbers but kept their distance. Mayor Jean Quan's career is now hanging by a thread and she has obviously ordered a stand-down in an attempt to salvage it.

And in Toronto (courtesy of our tabloid with the "Kick the bums out" front page today):

Clock is ticking for Occupy Toronto: Holyday

The city can’t let Occupy Toronto stay in St. James Park forever, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday said.

“I think there is going to be a point when they are no longer protesters; they are just habitating in our park,” Holyday said Wednesday. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re reaching (that point) soon.”

City officials confirmed last week that protesters who have set up more than 200 tents are occupying the public park without proper permits.

Almost two weeks into the protest, Holyday said it seems to be “just people squatting in our park.”

In other North American cities, officials have started to clear out Occupy encampments, leading to some violent clashes between protesters and police.

Although he wasn’t specific about when the Toronto protesters should be ordered out of the downtown park, Holyday cautioned the clock is ticking.

“When that time is reached, the city should take action,” he said. “It can’t go on forever; let’s put it that way.”

City staff are “working on a plan with affected parties to determine next steps,” according to a spokesman for Mayor Rob Ford.

Reuters article about general strike:

* Organizers say they want to shut down city next week
* Police chief says department investigating incident

By Peter Henderson

OAKLAND, Oct 27 (Reuters) - An Iraq war veteran hospitalized after being badly wounded in clashes between anti-Wall Street protesters and Oakland police had his condition upgraded on Thursday as activists called for a general strike against the California city.

Former U.S. Marine Scott Olsen, 24, was upgraded from critical to fair condition overnight, a spokeswoman for Highland General Hospital in Oakland said.

Friends said Olsen was breathing on his own and could undergo surgery in the next day or so.

Occupy Oakland organizers said they had voted to stage the strike next week, intending to shut down the city following what a spokeswoman called the "brutal and vicious" treatment of protesters including former U.S. Marine Scott Olsen.

Olsen has become a rallying cry for the Occupy Wall Street movement nationwide.

"We mean nobody goes to work, nobody goes to school, we shut the city down," organizer Cat Brooks said. "The only thing they seem to care about is money and they don't understand that it's our money they need. We don't need them, they need us."

Spokeswomen for the city of Oakland and Mayor Jean Quan could not immediately be reached for comment.

Brooks said a general strike was a "natural progression" following a crackdown by authorities early on Tuesday morning in which protesters were evicted from a plaza near city hall and 85 people were arrested.

Protesters sought to retake that plaza on Tuesday night and were repeatedly driven back by police using stun grenades and tear gas. It was during one of those clashes that protesters say Olsen was struck in the head by a tear gas canister fired by police.

Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told a news conference his department was investigating the incident.

BACK INTO THE STREETS

Olsen is believed to be the most seriously wounded person yet in confrontations between police and activists since Occupy Wall Street protests began last month in New York.

The protesters are angry at government bailouts of big banks, high unemployment, and economic inequality in the United States. Demonstrations have spread across the nation and overseas, although crowds remain relatively small in most cities.

Hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested in New York since the protests began. There have also been numerous arrests in other cities.

News of Olsen's injury ignited a furor among supporters of the protests. Activists in Oakland and elsewhere took to Twitter and other social media urging demonstrators back into the streets en masse.

More than 1,000 protesters moved onto the streets of Oakland again on Wednesday night as police largely kept their distance.

Friends say Olsen had been active in several anti-war veterans groups and had joined Oakland protesters in a gesture of solidarity after learning of the police crackdown there.

Keith Shannon, 24, who said he served with Olsen in Iraq, told Reuters his friend suffered a two-inch (5-cm) skull fracture and brain swelling.

Olsen served two tours in Iraq from 2006 to 2010 with the 3rd battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Shannon said, adding that he and Olsen deployed together and were assigned to a tactical communications unit.

Wall Street Firms Spy on Protesters in Tax-Funded Center

In a secretive government facility Wall Street firms get to sit alongside the New York Police Department and spy on law-abiding citizens.
October 26, 2011

Wall Street’s audacity to corrupt knows no bounds and the cooptation of government by the 1 per cent knows no limits. How else to explain $150 million of taxpayer money going to equip a government facility in lower Manhattan where Wall Street firms, serially charged with corruption, get to sit alongside the New York Police Department and spy on law abiding citizens.

According to newly unearthed documents, the planning for this high tech facility on lower Broadway dates back six years. In correspondence from 2005 that rests quietly in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s archives, NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly promised Edward Forst, a Goldman Sachs’ Executive Vice President at the time, that the NYPD “is committed to the development and implementation of a comprehensive security plan for Lower Manhattan…. One component of the plan will be a centralized coordination center that will provide space for full-time, on site representation from Goldman Sachs and other stakeholders.”
