Oakland Teachers Union OEA Executive Board endorsed Occupy Oakland’s November 2 “General Strike/Mass Day of Action”
October 30, 2011 in Solidarity Statements
Occupy Oakland General Strike November 2, 2011

In a unanimous vote on 10/28/11, the OEA Executive Board endorsed Occupy Oakland’s November 2 “General Strike/Mass Day of Action” and is urging members to participate in a variety of ways, including taking personal leave to join actions at Frank Ogawa Plaza, doing informational picketing at school sites, and holding teach-ins on the history of general strikes and organizing for economic justice.

Faced with growing class sizes and dwindling resources, school closures, and the ongoing attempts of charter management companies to entice Oakland schools to convert to charters, it is critical that we link our struggles with those of the 99% of Americans fighting for social and economic justice. It is simply wrong that banks and corporations are bailed out and continue to reap huge profits, while schools and social services suffer.

Join us on November 2nd, in solidarity with Occupy Movements across the globe!

WE ARE THE 99%!

Betty Olson-Jones
OEA President

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAQ’s- Nov. 2nd strike questions – OEA responses

Thank you to OEA members who responded to the email blast with questions!

MEMO: Won’t the loss of ADA adversely affect our school budget? Children are required to be at school in order to maintain ADA for that day. If parents choose to bring their children to school in the morning and then take them out at some point, that is their choice.

Q: Jennifer Dunn asked: “What is the OEA stance on this (General Strike) right now?”

A: Oakland Education Association supports the General Strike and encourages OEA members to participate in a variety of ways on Nov. 2nd.

Q: Rasheeda Turner asked: “What is the purpose (of the General Strike)?” “What are we hoping will change as a result of this one day strike?”

A: Teachers in Oakland teach the 99%, and are themselves part of the 99%. This is evident in the cuts to education, healthcare, services, home foreclosures, etc. that we witness in Oakland on an ongoing basis. Part of teaching is advocating for our students in the broader context. We hope that linking our struggle to this movement that is getting worldwide attention will force policy changes that will benefit all of us.

Q: Samia Khattab: “Why would we strike? Is it to show solidarity? Is it to protest the heavy handed response from the OPD? Or are we striking because of recent board decision?”

Q: Kamila Weaver: “@ Foster I feel like this is happening very quickly and I don’t fully understand why we would be striking and what we hope to accomplish by it.”

Q: Daniel Crew asked: “I personally think it is quite a pull to get all of us to agree to a strike without it being explicit to our contract. Is it even legal?”

A: Although Oakland Education Association is strike legal, OEA is not calling a strike action against OUSD. OEA is supporting the Occupy Oakland call for a mass action and support this call by encouraging our members to participate.

Q: Dennis asked: “What are potential employment consequences for wildcatters?”

A: Unauthorized striking may result in no pay for that day, and possible discipline. OEA would work through any problems employees encounter with the district. OEA has met with OUSD on this particular action, and OUSD said they will recognize use of personal days to support this action, provided a substitute teacher is secured.

Q: Katie @ Skyline: “How is the message getting to each school so that we have an impact??”

A: In a variety of ways. The message has gone out to OEA site reps via cluster calls. There will be constant contact messages, auto dialer messages, and information will be posted on the website as well as on our Twitter feed.

Q: Tessa Strauss asked: “What do we tell our students’ families? Should they be sending their kids to school that day?”

A: School is in session on Nov. 2nd. Every OEA member who plans to take Personal Leave to participate in the General Strike is responsible to ensure a substitute or alternative classroom coverage to supervise students. OEA members participating in the General Strike should request a sub ASAP, or by the end of the school day on Monday, Oct. 31st. OEA members should inform parents that school is in session on Nov. 2nd and inform parents of your individual plan (have a sub, have another teacher cover your class) and recommend parents make the personal decision whether to send their child to school or not on Nov. 2nd.

Q: Perry asks: “Has OEA talked about putting out a call for teach-ins at all? If the strike doesn’t pass, I think it would be a great way for us to participate on Wednesday.”

A: Yes, there is a tremendous educational opportunity here and by all means it shouldn’t be squandered.

Q: Jennifer Dannenberg: “What precautions against violent action by protestors and/or police can be taken?”

A: OEA has been working with labor council, faith based and community groups and have met with the Mayor and Chief of Police to try to ensure safety. Occupy Oakland protestors have been working to ensure peaceful and productive demonstrations.

Q: Tessa Strauss @ Ascent asks: “I’m wondering what our rights and protections are—I know most contracts have strike clauses. Would we be organizing teachers to take personal days together, have to get our principal on board and have all teachers agree to strike together and take the risk, etc—“

Q: Carrie Anderson asks: What are the technicalities of not being at work? Take a sick day or what? What do we tell our principal?

A: By all means, let your principal know that you intend to take a personal day and assure him or her that you have made arrangements with a substitute teacher. This needs to be put in writing by Monday. As for us having all teachers agree to strike together, we’re happy to hear it.

Every member must make a personal decision about Wednesday. Staff should reach consensus about coverage and site plan.

Q: Alykhan@EOSA: “How do we integrate students? Can they come with us?”

Q: Fatima@EOSA: “Will it be a walk-out for students, or a no-show for students who are participating in the strike?”

A: We can integrate students by educating them about the occupy movements and recent events that have occurred locally and nationally. OEA members cannot and should not take students to the General Strike as a field trip. OEA has not organized with secondary students to implement a student walk-out or student no-show. OEA is not aware of any potential students to organize these types of actions.

Q: I don’t want to use my personal leave, can I take a sick day?

A: NO! THAT IS FRAUD. Take personal leave or leave without pay. Do not take sick leave!

Tuscon citizens speaking to the mayor and city council about being arrested. Video at link. (can't copy embed code for some reason)

Must watch testimony from citizens blasting the mayor and the city council for openly defying the U.S. and Arizona constitution to suppress the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Watch this entire video, as it definitely gets good as Tuscon citizens touch on a wide range of issues that have motivated them to occupy.

My two favorite parts are 1) The gentlemen who citing 8 of his ancestors fighting in the 1st American revolution. 2) The gentlemen citing directly from both the U.S. and Arizona constitutions that are being openly violated and calling out the government saying these fundamental constitutional rights are more important than some city ordinance that was just enacted outlawing being in the park after a certain hour.

If nothing else, you will take away from this video that when when the last chapter of this great movement is finally recorded into the history books truth, liberty and justice will be on our side.

Chicago traders taunt ‘Occupy Chicago’ protesters with ‘We are Wall Street’ leaflets

The Chicago Board of Trade taunts “Occupy Chicago” protesters by dropping “We Are Wall Street” leaflets on top of them as they rally in the city’s financial district.

An Occupy Wall Street protestor reads a leaflet dropped by The Chicago Board Of Trade

Someone in the Chicago Board of Trade dropped leaflets on top of “Occupy Chicago” protesters Wednesday afternoon as they rallied alongside unions in the city’s financial district.

“We are Wall Street,” the leaflet said. “It is our job to make money.”

“Go ahead and continue to take us down, but you’re only going to hurt yourselves,” it continued. “What’s going to happen when we can’t find jobs on the Street anymore? Guess what: We’re going to take yours.”

“Do you really think we are incapable of teaching 3rd graders and doing landscaping?” the leaflet asked. “We aren’t dinosaurs. We are smarter and more vicious than that, and we are going to survive.”

While the group is protesting against the consolidation of economic and political power, they have not stated they want to abolish Wall Street. Their proposed list of demands includes specific policy changes, such as reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act, repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and campaign finance reform.

The protesters have also called for a financial transaction tax.

Previously, Chicago traders dropped flyers on the protesters that said, “We Are The 1 Percent Paying For This, You Are Paying For 1 Percent Of It.”

“Occupy Chicago” began on September 23, when around 20 people gathered at Willis Tower and then marched to the Federal Reserve Bank to show their solidarity with the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters in lower Manhattan.

Since then, dozens to hundreds of protesters have demonstrated day-after-day at a busy corner outside the Federal Reserve Bank, in city with a history of cracking down hard on civil disobedience.

More than 300 people have been arrested for trying to set up tents in Grant Park, leading “Occupy Chicago” protesters to confront Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Deputy Chief of Staff Felicia Davis inside Chicago’s City Hall on Tuesday.

Representatives from the group are meeting with city officials to discuss a permanent location for the demonstration.

Man found dead in tent during Occupy Okla. City protest; police say death not suspicious

By Associated Press, Published: October 31

...

Police Lt. Kevin Barnes says the death isn’t considered suspicious, but authorities have not determined how the man died. Barnes says someone called 911 about 2:40 p.m. Monday after he was found dead inside his tent at Kerr Park.

...

Fellow protest participant Mark Faulk says the man was in his early 30s and was homeless. Faulk says the man had delivered a passionate speech Sunday night about the problems of homelessness and drug abuse.

What a nice gift Banksy has given the Occupy London Movement. He created the classic Monopoly game with Uncle Pennybags himself asking for a handout. You can find the street art at St. Paul’s Cathedral as a show of support for the protest against corporate greed and corruption.

The Occupy Halloween parade ("because the 1% shouldn't get all the candy") went down on Wall Street earlier this morning, and our photographer Katie Sokoler was on the scene. She tells us there were about 22 protesters dressed up as both heroes and villains, with a fake Fox News team on hand as well. The event was essentially a photo op for press (they even had a storyboard), with "more cameras than heroes! They only walked a few blocks and stopped to pose at different buildings." Click through for photos of the working class superheroes, who will also be marching in the big Village Halloween Parade later this evening. Here's a list of characters:

The Slotbot 3000, a 16-foot-tall robotic representation of the New York Stock Exchange, squares off against Unemployed Man in a "Superheroes versus Economic Supervillains" event Monday in New York's Zucotti Park.

Unemployed Man Is the Unofficial Superhero of Occupy Wall Street
Unemployed Man and his costumed colleagues stormed Wall Street on Monday morning, bringing some superhero street theater — and a 16-foot evil robot known as the Slot Bot — to the Occupy protests in New York.
By Nicole Martinelli October 31, 2011 | 5:37 pm

The Superheroes versus Economic Supervillains smackdown was staged by Gan Golan, 37, co-author of the 2010 graphic novel The Adventures of Unemployed Man. Occupy Wall Street is a perfect stage for the book’s characters, a team of superheroes battling economic injustice.

“People at Occupy are fighting incredible forces in our society — that’s a perfect description of what you find in a superhero,” Golan told Wired.com.

Golan donned Unemployed Man’s custom orange-and-blue fetish costume for Monday’s event and joined others dressed as economic warriors from the book: undocumented worker Fantasma, student-debt-burdened Master of Degrees, Captain Generica and Wonder Mother. They waged battle against dark forces of the Just Us League, including such scoundrels as The Outsourcerer, Pink Slip and a the giant Slot Bot — part robot, part casino, with a head shaped like the New York Stock Exchange building and a menacing vacuum arm that hoovered up money.

Based in Los Angeles, Golan has been at Occupy New York for about a month now. One of his first actions was to donate a copy of The Adventures of Unemployed Man, which he co-wrote with Erich Origen, to Occupy’s then-nascent library. It’s perfect reading for those gathered in the park to speak out against corporate greed and economic inequality.

Image

With golden-age graphics, the graphic novel tells the tale of a 1-percenter who morphs into the other 99. In the book, playboy billionaire The Ultimatum, “a motivational vigilante who sees poverty as a symptom of poor mental hygiene,” gets booted from his own company and becomes a job-seeker beset by debt, bankruptcy, a lack of health care and a bad FICO score.

He becomes Unemployed Man and is joined by a trusty, silver-haired sidekick called Plan B and other “down-but-not-out” superheroes. The book, described by its creators as a “traumedy,” delivers a somewhat promising ending.

“Stories are a powerful way to guide us and keep us strong,” Golan said.

For an out-of-work guy, Unemployed Man definitely has his hustle on. When the graphic novel came out, Origen, a writer/artist, and Golan, a writer/activist, custom-ordered the title character’s orange-and-blue costume from a fetish site for about $200 and sold signed copies of the book on the streets of San Francisco. (Golan says fetish sites are the way for DIY superheroes to go — just remember to ask the manufacturers to cut an opening where the face should be. The resulting full-body suit is “very comfortable,” he says.)

Revolutions prompt Homeland Security to review guidelines for monitoring social media
By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, October 31, 10:12 PM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The wave of uprisings across North Africa and the Middle East and that have overturned three governments in in the past year have prompted the U.S. government to begin developing guidelines for culling intelligence from social media networks, a top Homeland Security official said Monday.

Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary Caryn Wagner said the use of such technology in uprisings that started in December in Tunisia shocked some officials into attention and prompted questions of whether the U.S. needs to do a better job of monitoring domestic social networking activity.

“We’re still trying to figure out how you use things like Twitter as a source,” she said. “How do you establish trends and how do you then capture that in an intelligence product?”

Wagner said the department is establishing guidelines on gleaning information from sites such as Twitter and Facebook for law enforcement purposes. Wagner says those protocols are being developed under strict laws meant to prevent spying on U.S. citizens and protect privacy, including rules dictating the length of time the information can be stored and differences between domestic and international surveillance.

Federal Judge Threatens Oakland Police Department With Court Takeover Over Ongoing Abuses
Submitted by mark karlin on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 4:10am.

EditorBlog

MARK KARLIN, EDITOR FOR BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT

Due to past law enforcement abuses, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) has been operating under the monitoring of a federal judge overseeing a consent decree since 2003.

Although it is difficult to set aside the deplorable record of the OPD in dealing with protesters for a moment - including Occupy Oakland advocates last Tuesday - it has a history of using excessive force on a daily basis. This includes the unnecessary drawing of guns, extortion and framing arrested individuals that is so egregious that the department may be put into receivership by the federal courts.

According to a September 11, 2011 article in the Bay Citizen, just a little over a month prior to the infamous Tuesday assault on Occupy Oakland, the federal judge overseeing the police department lambasted their conduct:

In a hearing that exposed the breadth of the problems facing Oakland, a federal judge blasted the Oakland Police Department Thursday for failing to make court-ordered changes designed to reduce police misconduct and abuse.

Before a courtroom full of city leaders and police department brass, U.S. District Court Judge Thelton Henderson highlighted a series of issues that "indicate to me the city and the department still don't get it."

Shortly prior to the assault on Occupy Oakland, the superintendent of the OPD resigned - after the scathing report by the federal judge - and Howard Jordan was appointed as interim chief of police. What was Jordan's prior role as assistant chief of the OPD? According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Jordan:

has been the Police Department's top authority on bringing the force into compliance with a consent decree ordered after four officers were accused more than a decade ago of systematically beating and framing suspects.

The consent decree is the most critical issue facing the department, as a federal judge warned last week that the city faces the possibility of having its Police Department placed in federal receivership due to its failure to fully comply with the court order. Such a move could result in the city losing control over its police budget, its biggest general fund expense.

Jordan, as interim superintendent, oversaw and directed the police action against Occupy Oakland supporters.

This federal consent decree is separate from the accord that the OPD was compelled to reach in 2004, which prohibits the use of potentially lethal and harmful suppression techniques against peaceful crowds, which BuzzFlash at Truthout pointed out they violated last week.

There's a thin blue line in law enforcement between enforcing the law and breaking the law. It's clear to US District Court Judge Henderson that the OPD keeps crossing that line.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
