nice

Postby Wilbur Whatley » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:23 am

catbirdsteed, I've been reading here for years, but I go long stretches without coming out of lurk mode.

Thanks for this very nice thread. I hadn't heard that clip with Leonard and Jennifer Warnes, and it was sweet.

I'd like to mention that it's not just Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan who are genius Jewish singer/songwriters with a soft spot for Jesus. A third is Paul Simon. Simon's greatest album, Rhythm of the Saints, is dripping with Christian symbolism.

Those three are my all-time favorite singers. More and more, as I've gotten older, I think that Leonard Cohen is the greatest of the three. It's a shame he is not better known. Nowadays, I play Leonard all the time, and I still play Paul Simon quite frequently, but I've gotten thoroughly tired of Bob.

Thanks for the prop, WW, It is ingratiating to start a thread (1st one) that gets well rec'd. Lots of good songs here, and I am more than a little cynical about the holidays, and at least a bit sentimental too.

Similar notions about both LC and BD, -and lots of fans all around RI- less so PS, but I do like his music a lot. Did not know that about "Rhythm of The Saints", but we do have "silent night" on the board, beautiful song, decent editing on the vid.

I have yet to see all the links posted, and would like to find something to represent patti smith singing "we three kings" ... (found it)

http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/pattismith (in player)

and perhaps there is a John Cale carol out there in online-land...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIzeG-mgDbE

John Cale - Child's Christmas In Wales (1973) (found it)

Hugh's double barrel deconstruction is welcome in the context, as it puts an intelligent minded spin on the cynicism.

So what we need here are Captain Beefheart x-mas songs, FZ, Roky Erikson, James Brown and the like, Certainly there are many more of those nuggets to tickle the fancy of bitter and misty-edye RI'ers all over the globe.

ok, I'll take a bigger swing this time...

first, some xmas poetry...

Christmas Blessings
by H. P. Lovecraft

As when a pigeon, loos'd in realms remote,
Takes instant wing, and seeks his native cote,
So speed my blessings from a barb'rous clime
To thee and Providence at Christmas time!

Christmastide
by H. P. Lovecraft

The cottage hearth beams warm and bright,
The candles gaily glow;
The stars emit a kinder light
Above the drifted snow.

Down from the sky a magic steals
To glad the passing year,
And belfries sing with joyous peals,
For Christmastide is here!

If anyone out there ought to be exposed to TL, but has not yet been, this could be the just the thing. He is an epitome of informed social satire, erudite lyricism and consummate cynicysm.

Christopher Hitchens: Bah, Humbug on Christmas

A blowhard for certain, quite the opposite of TL, but might be worth a quick view if one likes, dislikes or is curious about CH.

A John Waters Christmas - Here Comes Fatty Claus - John Prescott Remix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDAgIWaHsMU

John Prescott was Deputy PM of GB,

John Waters is directer of classic cinema.

This is a very funny song. The edited stills are passable, but they did get me to learn a little bit about John Prescott. I did not like what I found.

There is little online to listen to from this album. I will try to get a copy by next year.

Merry post-xmas all.
