Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Gosh - devour, suffering and the devil.

My only hope for salvation is that this can clearly be proved as some keyword Hijack.

Lovecraft? I kid.

But...we've seen some pretty big examples of egregoric mass trauma
for nasties to gobble up

Agreed. Someone here pointed that one out a while back. It's pretty blunt that one. Eye of Horus and all.

Just as I think exorcism is a seemingly mythological phenomena that actually bears alot of common wisdom, I think the same is true of the trauma eaters. So I am curious where else we find their existence in different cultures.

well, I have to bring up Star Trek TOS ep, "Day of the Dove"

Spock believes the entity may be feeding off everyone's negative emotions, especially fear and anger. He suggests it may have faked the colony distress call and set up this battle between the crew and Klingons so that it has a convenient source of nourishment.

Having seen the alien herself, Mara is finally convinced and leads Kirk to her husband Kang, who remains holed up in engineering. Mara tries to explain what is going on to her husband, but he doesn't believe it and demands a final duel to the death with Kirk. The two ship captains begin their swordfight and soon the entity appears to feed off their anger.

Despite the presence of the being, Kang continues fighting. Kirk however struggles to ask Kang if he would like to spend the next thousand lifetimes satisfying the alien's twisted desires. Mara also convinces her husband to lay down his arms. Kang now realizes the fight is pointless and agrees to a truce. To combat the alien entity, the Klingons and Enterprise crew begin to show goodwill and positive emotion toward each other. This finally drives the weakened alien from the ship.

and supposedly isn't one of the main reasons for burying the dead and other funeral ceremony based on the fear of some of them coming back and basically eating away at the lives of the living?

old SE Asian spirit beliefs are a good place to look.

and I think there's some parallels in Celtic mythology and fairy stories. The Púca for instance.

another point of view

Postby alwyn » Sun Jul 19, 2009 1:13 am

from Rumi:

The whole world is a form for truth.
When someone does not feel grateful to that,
the forms appear to be as he feels.
They mirror his anger, his greed, and his fear.

Make peace with the universe.
Take joy in it.
It will turn to gold.
Resurrection will be now.

Every moment,
a new Beauty.

tr. Coleman Barks

Old Crockett used to say that nothing could feed on you unless you gave it permission at some point. Permission can be gained in some pretty strange ways, though. Perhaps by indulging in murder and mayhem, or anger and greed, one feeds the creatures.

This also may be the whole point behind the Sufi structure of quelling the nafs...the bad stuff in man. When we slay our inner demons, the plane of reflection or demonstration (earth central, eh?) reflects the clear stream of consciousness, also depriving the lower astral entities 'breakfast'.

Although on another note I have noticed a distressing tendency in some people who like to create negative situations and feed off of them...doesn't require any supernatural entities at all!

LBO,
The board visited this topic years ago, lightly in the below threads, but extensively in another which I cannot find. I believe it was in the more extensive one that a poster shared his experience with entities, although I'm not sure. It sticks out in my mind because I had a big disagreement with Jeff. Maybe he remembers the thread.

Quoted as an example for any out there still labouring under the misapprehension that women are somehow "congenitally incapable" of generating original humour.

David Lynch in the Twin Peaks TV and movie volumes named the pain-food Garmanbozia , enjoyed by the archon-monsters of the blue/black/white lodge. It looks like creamed corn and they eat it during torture-murders and while feeling the hysterical despair of the bereaved.

http://twinpeaks.tumblr.com/

I certainly think Lynch is into notions like tulpas and the Demiurgic-Black Iron Prison controllers and slaves who create and grow fat on suffering. Cripes, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway and Inland Empire put across the same themes. They will turn you into a vessel of pure pain and madness.

This goes quite deeply to the more mundane pimps, slave-traders, mind controllers, war pigs, rapists and torturers who really do feed on spreading pain, and who I believe find crying and screaming exciting musical, pleasing and sexually arousing.

Lynch plays this in a blue, quiet, minor key until he really decides to scare the fuck out of you and blow your mind... and this is all part of his real effort to stop cruelty and encourage us to end the Empire.
