SWAT teams are being sent to inspect all platforms and rigs.

Since when do SWAT teams inspect oil platforms?

Makes you wonder if they're worried that sabotage was at play here?

Second drilling rig overturns in Louisiana

The Coast Guard said Friday it was responding to another oil drilling rig accident near Morgan City, Louisiana.

April 30, 2010

A "mobile inland drilling unit" overturned in the Charenton navigational channel south of U.S. Highway 90 near Morgan City, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

There were no reports of injuries, the Coast Guard said. The floating shallow-water rig was not immediately identified and the importance of the channel was not clear.

The vessel has a 20,000-gallon diesel fuel capacity, but the Coast Guard, citing officials on the scene, said there was no fuel leaking.

As a precaution, 500 feet of oil spill containment boom was deployed around the rig and an additional 500 feet were being brought in, the Coast Guard said in its statement.

I believe it stands for something very different in this instance. Something like Surface Water Assessment Team.

They're an oil spill response team.

It will hamper efforts to clear up oil from a massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico which is starting to ooze ashore in the southeastern US, threatening birds and other wildlife along fragile islands and barrier marshes and putting one of the world's richest seafood grounds in peril.

I know there are three threads going on this topic, so if I am repeating other posts I apologize ahead of time. I cannot help but think (with no back up whatsoever to prove this) that perhaps the second spill is related to the first?

I mean, the 2nd spill clearly provides a diversion from the 1st spill, and now what do you know, BP isn't the only Potential Responsible Party anymore, are they? The first spill can't possibly be cleaned up in a timely manner, because now there is a second spill to contend with and consume financial resources. I suppose in hindsight, months and years (?) after it is revealed who paid what for clean up and when will the pieces be put together about these back-to-back incidents

Causing a second spill would be a good strategy if your goal was to delay response to the first spill. From a monetary standpoint, though, you're just increasing the overall economic damage, both to the owner of the second rig, and to BP as well (that's oil that they wanted to sell, gushing uselessly into the ocean).

And alll the right-wing propaganda ministers are trying to make hay with this, that Obama is sending Special Weapons and Tactics teams to the platforms for nefarious Obamian purposes.

What a bunch of dipshits.
