Why would we be surprised that someone capable of this might have a mental health background that would include prescription meds?
We could also speculate on abuse, learning difficulties, social problems, etc.
Scapegoating the meds seems to let the individuals actions off the hook.

Yes, the UT Tower Shooting was here / there. It is a large part of what lead to the formation of SWAT, I've been told.

These school shootings came about when pharmaceutical-industrial complex vis a vis mental health had made more inroads into teenagers and young people than at any point in the past. Many of these shooters have had psychological problems, but what did these types of kids do before the late 90s? They didn't seem to be shooting up universities and schools.

Actually for at least a few years now, these shootings seem to have dissipated -- with the notable exception of Virginia Tech. I don't know if that's better school security or what. And I have not heard that drugs the are being prescribed any less like candy, than they had been in the past. There could be other things in our culture, certainly, that have brought about the advent of the school shootings... But I don't think the connection between psychotropic drugs -- and them being given to young people -- and school shooting events should be ignored.

Backatcha! Ditto for your naiveté ...

I'm not saying that pharmaceuticals don't possibly play a part, however, there is a little thing called the Copycat Effect / Werther Effect - look into it.

Hey, you might even want to read Loren Coleman's book, The Copycat Effect - How The Media and Popular Culture Trigger The Mayhem in Tomorrow's Headlines by Loren Coleman
Paraview Pocket Books - Simon and Schuster, 2004, 308 pages
http://www.lorencoleman.com/copycateffe ... ffect1.htm

http://copycateffect.blogspot.com

The bottom line is, aside from the Covert-Ops possibilities, the fact remains these appear to be Rage Shootings / Killings and are usually perpetrated by people who are suicidal. Suicidal people often end up on the drugs you and others blame as the (sole?) factor behind the shootings.

Re: Shots Fired at University of Texas Austin

Postby elfismiles » Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:02 pm

EDIT: the video report at the link below contradicts one of the witnesses who came face to face with the gunman. She says she saw him outside and heard shots fired but the video at the link below says shots were only fired INSIDE the building. On the Alex Jones show today at least one caller said he heard initial reports of a cabby witnessing a person on 21st street firing off rounds.

Police: UT Austin gunman was student, acted alone VIDEO

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Law enforcement officials say they believe the gunman who opened fire with an assault rifle at a University of Texas campus library before killing himself was a student who acted alone.

Campus police Chief Robert Dahlstrom at a Tuesday news conference that officials have ruled out the possibility of a second shooter. The initial confusion was because the suspect fired shots in multiple locations.

The University of Texas has issued an all clear hours after a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle at a campus library then fatally shot himself. A notice was posted on its emergency information website emphasizing that the school remains closed and that the area around the Perry-Castenada Library is still an active crime scene.

A man wearing dark clothes and a ski mask opened fire with an assault rifle Tuesday inside a University of Texas library, then fatally shot himself.

The 50,000-student campus - the site of one of the nation's deadliest shooting rampages four decades ago - was on lockdown while officers with bomb-sniffing dogs carried out a building-by-building manhunt.

Campus police spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said a man fired an automatic weapon on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library then shot himself dead. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the gunman fired an AK-47.

Acevedo told a news conference that police are investigating what he described as a second crime scene outside the library where shots also were fired.

Texas campus police chief Robert Dahlstrom said the suspect wore dark clothes and a ski mask.

Randall Wilhite, an adjunct law professor at the university, said he was driving to class when he saw "students start scrambling behind wastebaskets, trees and monuments," and then a young man carrying an assault rifle sprinting along the street.

"He was running right in front of me ... and he shot what I thought were three more shots ... not at me. In my direction, but not at me, clearly not at me," Wilhite said.

The professor said the gunman had the opportunity to shoot several students and Wilhite, but he did not.

Police were patrolling nearby buildings with bomb-sniffing dogs to hunt for the possible second suspect and make sure no explosives had been left behind.

"What we're doing right now is being methodical to eliminate the second suspect," Acevedo said.

No shots were fired by law enforcement, Acevedo said.

The university canceled classes for the day. Police and university officials locked down the campus for several hours and early afternoon started to allow students to leave.

In an earlier e-mail alert to students and staff, the university said police were searching for possible second shooter.

Weldon said there was no report that the possible second suspect may have been armed, but that police are taking all precautions and keeping the campus locked down.

Law enforcement from campus police, Austin police and the state Department of Public Safety rushed onto campus at the first reports of the shooting. Tank-like armored vehicles were positioned near the library. A DPS helicopter circled the campus overhead.

Jennifer Scalora, who works in admissions, was in her office about 100 yards from the library. She said the campus - one of the biggest in the country - was now empty except for police, SWAT teams and helicopters.

"Campus is very quiet. You can barely see anyone moving," Scalora said.

"The students did their part, they cleared the streets, they cleared the grounds in a very quick manner," Acevedo said.

Tuesday's shooting is not the first at the school.

On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman went to the 28th floor observation deck at the UT clock tower in the middle of campus and began shooting at people below. He killed 16 people andwounded nearly three dozen before police killed him about 90 minutes after the siege began.

The Perry-Castaneda Library is one of several on the campus and is one of the busiest undergraduate libraries.

Student Joshua Barajas, 23, said he usually is in the library in the mornings but was delayed Tuesday when he made a rare pit stop for coffee.

"These little mundane decisions could save your life. If I hadn't stopped for coffee -- and I never stop for coffee because it's $4 -- I could have been in that building," Barajas said. "It's creepy. I don't even want to think about it."

We have a name: Colton Tooley

Colton Tooley, 19, opened fire Tuesday morning inside a University of Texas at Austin campus library, then shot and killed himself. Investigators are now searching what appears to have been Tooley's Austin home.

Updated today at 3:34 PM

Austin police and crime-scene officials are searching a home said to have housed the man they say was responsible for a shooting at the Perry-Castaneda Library on the University of Texas campus Tuesday.

Just before 3 p.m. KVUE's news partner, the Austin-American Statesman, reported the gunman involved in the incident was 19-year-old Colton Tooley. His identity was confirmed to the Statesman by the Travis County Medical Examiner's office.

The Statesman reports investigators are moving in and out of a house in the 3200 block of Western Drive in South Austin, just north of William Cannon Drive near Brodie Lane. According to public documents, Tooley lived in that home.

Tooley opened fire Tuesday morning just after 8 a.m. inside the campus library, then shot and killed himself. Authorities say Tooley was a student who acted alone. UT’s student directory lists Tooley as a sophomore math major, with a focus on actuarial sciences, within the College of Natural Sciences.

UT police spokesperson Rhonda Weldon says no one else was injured in Tuesday's shooting.

An emergency alert warning of an "active shooter" and "shelter in place" was listed on the UT website more than an hour after the gunfire happened on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library.

Weldon says a man with an automatic weapon opened fire inside the library, located on the south end of the sprawling campus, and no shots were fired outside. Then, he shot himself.

The University of Texas website said, "A suspected shooter in PCL library is dead. Police are searching for possible second shooter. Lock doors, do not leave your building."

UT police used a siren and texting system to tell students there was an emergency situation on campus and to stay indoors. Students received the first text notice of an armed suspect at the Perry-Castaneda Library at 8:21 a.m. Then, at 8:45, a text said to shelter in place. A third text sent at 10:18 a.m. said to remain in shelter in place.

Just before 10:15 a.m. the UT Emergency Information webpage continued to send the warning, "If you are off campus, STAY AWAY. If you are on campus, lock doors, do not leave your building.

Soon after, UT announced that all classes Tuesday were canceled. The lockdown on the University of Texas campus was lifted just after noon.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the gunfire. Officials say Tooley had an AK-47. Investigators have not confirmed how many shots were fired.

Student Andrew McWaters tells KVUE he saw the shooter in a ski mask and a business suit, who smiled at him and yelled, "Whoohoo."

City officials and police held a press conference around 10:45 a.m. University of Texas President William Powers said, "We are fortunate that the UT Police Department and Austin Police Department in a coordinated manner...worked extremely well this morning."

APD Chief Art Acevedo said APD SWAT, UT PD, Travis County PD, and DPS SWAT are all conducted searches of the perimeter. Bomb-sniffing dogs were used as well, to make absolutely certain there was no second shooter, and that no explosive devices were left behind.

UT's police chief says that word of a second shooter may have originated due to the fact that police have received multiple descriptions of the shooter.

Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting.

If you saw the gunman, call KVUE News at 512/459-9442.

If you have more information on the shooting you call toll free 1-866 657-9400.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Police say Colton Tooley, a 19-year-old sophomore math major, was the gunman who shot himself to death in a library on campus at the University of Texas-Austin on Tuesday.

Austin and University of Texas police were searching his home on Western Drive in South Austin on Tuesday afternoon. Tooley, who killed himself at the Perry-Casteneda Library around 8:40 a.m. after firing shots outside on campus, was a student in UT's School of Natural Sciences.

Neighbors near the house on Western Drive said that around 11:45 a.m., family members were gathered at the home - several of them appearing distraught, with one woman sobbing.

Officials said the gunman began firing shots with his semi-automatic weapon randomly at 21st Street and University Drive, able to find him only with students' help. They pointed police in the right direction, who were able to then chase him into the PCL building and off the streets and away from those around.

No other injuries were reported, and police never fired their weapons.

"This was the result of a coordinated exercise," said Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell.

Just weeks before Austin and university police conducted a joint training exercise that prepared them for critical situations much like this.

In addition, Austin Police Department Chief Art Acevedo emphasized three things:

The importance of preparedness. "It became readily apparent that the University of Texas was prepared for this situation," said Acevedo.
Rapid response. Authorities were almost immediately on campus and chased the gunman inside the library building. Acevedo commended the students who led the way to the suspect as they kept pointing law enforcement in the right direction.
Agency collaboration
University of Texas Police Department Chief Robert Dahlstrom said at 12:30 p.m. that a search for a potential second gunman or suspect turned up nothing - and that initial witness speculation that there may have been two threatening individuals appear to be false. He also said that multiple descriptions of the same person led to the belief of that second person.

"There is no doubt training paid off in this situation," said Dahlstrom.

Authorities said the gunman fired a minimum of four shots from a 7.62-mm firearm into the building.

Though no one was injured, EMS did treat two people for minor injuries, which police said were unrelated to the gunman but rather due to the commotion and movement in response to the incident.

The all-clear was issued for University of Texas faculty and students around noon, meaning they can leave campus but cannot go in the investigation area where the shooting took place. The PCL is the only area that is currently contained.

Authorities - in a multiagency effort - had spent several hours searching fervently for a possible second suspect after a gunman entered the University of Texas Perry Castenada library with an AK-47, fired off shots and then shot himself.

"This is a very critical incident," said UT President Bill Powers. "The University of Texas Police Department and Austin Police Department responded extremely professionally this morning."

For more information, people are directed to call 1-866-657-9400 or (512) 471-2255.
Armored vehicles and helicopters surrounded the scene on campus as a number of agencies conducted secondary searches to eliminate explosives that could "have been left behind by one or more suspects."

K-9 officers swept areas around campus, conducting sniff searches mainly around the University Drive area.

"We are very fortunate in the fact that no one else was injured, other than the lone gunman," said UT Police Department Chief Robert Dahlstrom.

"No shots were fired by members of law enforcement," said Acevedo.

Officials said the gunman wore all black and a ski mask.

"When you have a situation like this, you're going to get multiple descriptions," said Dahlstrom. "We have to check out every lead we get or every call we get."

Oscar Trevino said his daughter, Martina, is a University of Texas employee and was on her way to work when she saw the gunman behind her as he fired a couple of shots.

"She took off running, tripped and sprained her ankle," said Trevino.

Some people were able to help her inside a building.

Trevino said Martina is OK and has texted him throughout the morning, saying she is very shaken up. He said he is worried about his daughter calming down and "getting her head back together" and that he has not asked her any questions so she won't get details confused and will be able to talk to police and the university as needed.

"I just thank God she's fine," said Trevino.

Austin police had her and others in the basement of the Perry-Castaneda Library and were moving them by bus to police headquarters.

Adjunct UT law professor Randall Wilhite told the Austin-American Statesman he was driving toward class on University Drive - by the AT&T Conference Center - when he heard what he thought was construction noise but turned out to be

gunshots.

He saw students scattering and a man in a suit carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle heading east on 21st Street.

"He ran right in front of my car, fired two or three shots south sort of generally in my direction but not at me," Wilhite said. "They seemed to hit to my left sort of in the median. It didn’t look like he was targeting individuals. He

The University of Texas Police Deparment, Austin Police Department and SWAT are all on campus. The area at 21st Street and Speedway Avenue looks like a war zone, with armored vehicles and weapons swarming that area.

"I saw the swarm when I got here," said Acevedo, adding they covered grounds in a very quick manner.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell was at the press briefing Tuesday morning and said he is "very proud" of the way the multiple agencies have responded to ensure safety. He reminded Austinites that they can be confident that they are safe.

Students were being asked to exit the Welch building with their hands up. The building is just down the street from the library.

The gunman entered the PCL at the UT campus with a weapon, fired several shots and then killed himself.

There are no other injuries reported. An ambulance could be seen just before 9 a.m. Tuesday in front of the library with its sirens on, though no people were coming out of the library.

The library is located on 21st Street and Speedway Avenue and is just across the largest dormitory on campus, Jester Residence Hall. It also across from the Gregory Gym and the Red McCombs School of Business.

Students and staff were asked to stay where they are and are being asked not to enter campus if they are not already there.

Still, some students were in the middle of an exam and had their cell phones off when the incident happened, so they missed the notification. They found out only when their professor alerted them to evacuate.

Text messages and e-mails were sent to students that read the following:

Text at 8:28 a.m.
"Armed subject reported last seen at Perry Castaneda Library on 9/28/2010. Details to follow."

E-mail at 8:57 a.m.
"At this time, UT Alert has sent a message of an armed subject near Perry Castenada Library. Details to follow. UTPD has informed Housing and Food to go into complete lock down and for residents and staff to shelter in place until further notice."

"Again, armed subject reported at Perry Castaneda Library. Shelter in place. Stay where you are at. More information to follow."

E-mail at 9:53 a.m.
In the interest of keeping you up to date on the current emergency, I want you to know that the campus remains locked down. All students, faculty, staff, and visitors should stay indoors and continue to follow instructions (from loudspeakers, email, text messages, and uniformed police officers). You will be notified when the situation becomes stable.

The armed suspect is dead. No other injuries have been reported.

All organized classes for today, September 28, are cancelled.

UT shuttle routes will continue departing from campus until 2:30 p.m. After that time, it will not run since the campus is closed.

Shuttle service will resume regular schedules Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, all non-UT Shuttle routes are running regular schedules and are no longer detoured. Re: Shots Fired at University of Texas Austin

My friend and co-host Mack White just sent me the following link - I'd seen refs to it online earlier today but hadn't followed them but now I'm thinking, like he is, that the UT shooter is a copycat of this "Suicide by Cop" incident.

Police chief: Man who led officers on chase and shot himself intended to commit 'suicide by cop'
Man became suicidal weeks ago when his girlfriend dumped him, Acevedo says.

A 26-year-old Austin man, distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend and seemingly intent to commit "suicide by cop," died early Saturday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot after leading officers on a 45-minute chase, according to Police Chief Art Acevedo.

The man, whom police did not identify, repeatedly waved handguns at officers and refused their exhortations to surrender, Acevedo said. But when he trained a gun at two men in a pickup in what seemed to be an effort to take over their vehicle, a police corporal fired a single shot at him.

"The suspect immediately dropped," and he then appeared to shoot himself in the head, Acevedo said.

The police chief was quick to praise officers, and Cpl. Javier Bustos in particular, at a time when the Police Department has been under intense scrutiny over its use of force. "In my opinion, when you exercise that much restraint, at peril to yourself at times, that's heroic," Acevedo said.

Fallout from the May 2009 shooting of Nathaniel Sanders II by an Austin officer continues to linger with the department.

The City Council rejected a $750,000 tentative settlement with Sanders' family in July, after which the family sued the city for doing so.

Meanwhile, the family's civil rights lawsuit against the former officer involved, Leonardo Quintana, is pending in federal court. Officials say Quintana shot Sanders after they struggled for a gun in the parking lot of an East Austin apartment complex.

Acevedo said the suspect in Saturday's incident became suicidal four weeks ago when his girlfriend broke up with him.

"His actions throughout his contact with the Austin Police Department were consistent with an individual that was attempting to force officers to shoot him, which is commonly referred to as suicide by cop," he said.

Assistant Police Chief David Carter said Bustos, an 11-year veteran of the department "in good standing," shot the man in the left shoulder.

Carter, who is the department's chief of staff, said officials with the Travis County medical examiner's office would determine the cause of death.

"We are pretty confident that after that first shot was taken by the officer, more likely than not it's going to turn out that the suspect then committed suicide, ended his life, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," Acevedo said.

According to police chief, the incident began as a confrontation between the man and his former girlfriend. The woman had been at a friend's house watching a movie when the man arrived in the ex-girlfriend's BMW. He told the woman that he wanted her to see him die, the chief said. Police have not given the location of that house.

She got into the BMW at his invitation, and they drove to her home on Bantom Woods Bend, which is off FM 969 near Decker Lane in far East Austin, Acevedo said. He got a handgun and started taking random shots inside the house. Then he shot her cell phone after she dialed 911 shortly after midnight, the chief said.

Officers arriving at the home ordered the man to drop his weapon when he walked out of the house, the chief said, but he went back inside, opened the garage door and fled in the BMW.

Officers gave chase but quickly lost him and returned to the house, Acevedo said. A few minutes later, the man returned.

"This is a man who is trying to engage the police, not get away from the police," the chief said.

The man drove around in tight circles and then fled again. Officers began a 45-minute pursuit in which the suspect at times drove faster than 130 mph, Acevedo said.

The incident ended about 1:45 a.m. on Ben White Boulevard just east of Riverside Drive and west of U.S. 183 after the man turned into a driveway for retail shops and started to head west in the eastbound lanes on Ben White.

"Again the officers exercised outstanding judgment," Acevedo said. "They didn't get caught up in the moment. They did not choose to pursue on the wrong side of the freeway, which would not have been the smartest thing to do."

The suspect's progress was immediately halted by an eastbound Ford pickup, although the two vehicles did not collide. He got out of the BMW and aimed one of two .45-caliber handguns he was carrying at the two men in the truck, Carter said. That's when Bustos, who was behind the man, fired.

Ben White Boulevard — a major thoroughfare to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport — was closed in both directions from Riverside to U.S. 183 for at least six hours, starting at 2 a.m., police said.

The corporal was placed on administrative leave with pay, underwent blood tests and will see the department's psychologist — all standard in such cases, Acevedo said.

The police chief said that officers captured the incident on video and that patrol cars responding to the call all had their cameras operating.

He said the incident underscores the importance of getting help for someone with mental health problems.

"I talk to my folks about that all the time," Acevedo said. "Get help. It's OK to ask for help."

The sad sign in the Cousin's public statement is that he says there were no warning signs, that Colton didn't act depressed, that "he never usually expressed his emotions."

BING BING BING BING!!!

Apparently he lived just a few miles from my home in South Austin.

Right elfsmiles, the flat affect would raise a flag to any mental health professional. This is a young man who may have benefitted from cognitive behavioral therapy and dare I say pharmaceutical use. Of course had he been using big pharma and still killed himself would those such as Montag then blame the medication? And to add to the conundrum- what if he had been self medicating with alcohol or marijuana? The point is (if I have a point here)that it is the individuals own thought process, in this case, as in many others, that led to the aberrant behavior, however he may or maynot have facilitated it.
