Which application generated that little gem anyway?

The First Amendment Redux
by Jonah Raskin | Swans dot com
— last paragraph only

(Swans - October 24, 2011) The Occupy Wall Street protesters —those with whom I have been e-mailing, anyway— understand the links between the local and the global and between New York and Cairo, Washington, D.C. and Athens. They also understand that behaving politely, speaking softly, and never talking out of turn —as many of their elders have taught them— won’t enable them to break through the clutter of corporate media. [A young American revolutionary named James] Madison never said that those who practiced freedom of speech and the press were required to mind their p’s and q’s and say “Yes, Sir” and “No, Sir” as they do in the U.S. Marines. Throughout American history, advocates of freedom and defenders of the First Amendment —abolitionists, feminists, pacifists, and environmentalists— have been a rowdy, rambunctious gang. Let’s hope that this generation carries on in that spirit, that they understand the merits of patience, and remember that the powers-that-be will do everything possible to stifle, repress, and silence their voices.

    [RESUME.]

Art will be the last bastion when all else fades away.
~ Timothy White (b 1952), American rock music journalist

3 Struck by Car and Hospitalized at Occupy DC protest; Driver Not Charged,
Police Blame Protesters and Charge One of Them

Police: 3 struck by car at Occupy DC protest

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police said early Saturday that a driver will not be charged for striking three people taking part in an Occupy DC protest in downtown Washington.

Lt. Christopher Micciche of the D.C. police said the driver was not cited because he had a green light when his vehicle struck the three on Friday night.

He said witnesses told police that the three pedestrians "either ran toward or jumped in front of the moving vehicle." He said one pedestrian jumped on the hood of the car. One of them was cited for being in the roadway.

"The protesters were apparently trying to block the roadway," Micciche said. "It was essentially an accident where three individuals were injured but they were in violation by being in the roadway."

(...)

One protester, 29-year-old Jesse Folks, told The Washington Post that he was standing in the street with other demonstrators near the convention center when the car "just gassed it into a bunch of people."

"We were in the street, but this guy didn't even give us a chance to get out of the way," Folks said.

Jeff wrote:In Oakland, a window breaks and it's shamed the entire action, and an apology and a distancing is expected from all. The same isn't demanded of a police force when a skull is cracked, though much more should be.

This sentiment was echoed by my husband Wednesday night when he asked, "what's 7 broken windows compared to 77,000 broken homes?" People are desperate.

Since Wednesday night I've seen footage of police in Oakland covering their nametags and badge numbers, in contravention of CA law.

Why would policemen do that, unless they were planning to commit crimes? Why isn't that all over the news?

The strike was an amazing success, in my view, broken windows and all. The city lost two prospective tenants, large businesses, rhe mayor is disgraced, and the news coverage that I saw was more sympathetic than I've ever known. The message being carried is: ordinary people have the power to take back their futures, even here in America.

Willie Brown (popular ex-mayor of San Francisco) was asked in an interview last Sunday, what he'd do in the face of a similar occupation. His answer:pray for rain, that's all you can do.

The fact that Occupy Oakland is so dangerous is an indication of its success. A long history of police wrongdoing is being laid out for everyone to see and among people I encounter, sentiments are coming down strongly on the side of protesters. Still, it's going to get worse before it gets better. I joke that Brown (not Willie, Jerry) would call out the National Guard, if they weren't already deployed overseas.

I'm loathe to post comments from this monster, but his analysis of the root of the "significant bifurcation" in society ought to be preserved here. It's not income inequality, it's education! Though if you attended college, and didn't major in engineering, it's your fault. Or, as he told one of his journalists several years ago who'd thought her job was to inform the public and not generate revenue for Sam Zell, fuck you.

Yes. And the danger isn't violent in its essence, unlike the police reaction to it, but it is revolutionary.

America needs engineers, sure. But this is supposed to be a sophisticated society of high culture, creativity, and application. Then there is that fucking woman on the panel that is almost as annoying. What a bitch. And the guys... the main interviewer was the least offensive, but he barely put on any counterpoint. A weak contesting, then the woman comes in and castrates him. An Joe Kernan, that piece of shit. Dick boy sits there at CNBC for decades now doing nothing but serving the corporations. His bemoaning and lying on their behalf is his marathon, getting his easy money for the service. Traitors to humanity, them all! What about the social contract motherfuckers?! WASHINGTON -- Protesters marched on the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Friday evening where Americans for Prosperity, a conservative organization funded in part by the Koch brothers, was assembled for its Defending The American Dream Summit and Ronald Reagan tribute dinner.
During the dinner, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said "I am proud to know the Koch brothers," according to The New York Times.
Across the street from the convention center, counterprotesters had organized Occupy The Koch Brothers, featuring a Guerilla Drive-In event featuring videos "fun videos that expose the Koch Brothers in colossal fashion," according to the event's website.
Several streets and intersections around Mount Vernon Square were closed during the duration of the protest near the convention center.

CHICAGO TRADER DUMPS MCDONALD’S APPLICATIONS ON THE 99 PERCENT
Chicagoist reports that someone at the Chicago Board of Trade blanketed Occupy Chicago protesters with hundreds of McDonald’s applications, mocking the demonstrators camped outside. Employees at the organization — the world’s oldest futures exchange — have heckled Occupy Chicago protesters almost since day one. They’ve proudly hung “We Are The 1%” in their office windows, papered the movement with fliers, and sent out email spam. Now, they seem to have moved on to “job counseling.” Though it may not be very good advice, as McDonald’s recently hired just 60,000 workers out of 1 million applications they received.

Occupy Denver Honors Veterans & Takes Action Against Big Banks

Denver, Colorado, November 2nd, 2011 - This Saturday, November 5th, Denver is hosting its 2011 Veterans Day Parade in Civic Center Park, where Occupy Denver has established its Occupation. Last night, Occupy Denver came to a unanimous consensus to vacate Civic Center Park following the 7 PM General Assembly meeting on Friday, November 4th, in a show of solidarity with our veterans, our service men and women, and our fallen heroes. Occupy Denver supports the valor and sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces, and unilaterally wishes to show unwavering support and respect for the Veterans Day Parade.

Occupy Denver will reestablish its Occupation at Skyline Park on 16th Street Mall, directly across from the Denver Federal Reserve building, and has planned a series of actions for Saturday to coincide with the bank boycott known as Bank Transfer Day, in which customers are urged to close their accounts with predatory financial institutions like Wells Fargo, Citibank, and Chase, and redeposit their funds into their local credit unions. Occupy Denver member Mitch Shenassa explains, “The Occupation has deliberately chosen the space across from the Federal Reserve as its temporary site to bring attention to the economic dangers posed by this independent central bank and its short-sighted fractional reserve banking system that cause the devaluation of our currency and the ballooning of our national debt.” ...

Denver’s citizens will gather at the Federal Reserve building and march en masse to their respective banks to withdraw their financial support from the corporate entities responsible for the gradual erosion of the middle class through sub-prime mortages, usurious fees and interest rates, and a loyalty to corporate profits over the financial interests of their hard-working customers. Occupy Denver will coordinate and rally customers to an undisclosed number of Downtown Denver’s corporate bank branches in a randomized sequence throughout the morning and afternoon. Following the Bank Transfer Day effort, Occupy Denver will lead a peaceful march down 16th Street Mall in protest of predatory lending practices, unlawful foreclosures on the homes of American families, and unchecked criminality in our nation’s banking and financial systems. All who wish to join the march against the greed and injustice of private and public financial institutions are invited to rally at Noon on Saturday, November 5th, at the Denver Federal Reserve. Join your fellow Coloradoans in voicing your frustrations with the banks that have preyed on us over the past decade—together we will create a voice they cannot ignore.

I walked through the Occupy Denver tent/sleeping bag city in front of the Capital and in Civic Center Park a few times a couple of weeks ago. It was a hostile, paranoic atmosphere - not friendly at all. A guy walked toward me with his two buddies, perhaps a bit stoned - and for a second, I thought I was going to have to fight. He stepped right up, got in my face and said something about "that Charles Manson shit"; but I smiled and couldn't help but laugh, and they laughed and we walked on by each other. It was pretty funny.

The atmosphere reminded me of the DNC in '08: Cops everywhere; taking pictures and mixing with the crowd. I got the feeling that half the crowd was Homeland Security. That was a before the first crack down.

Now, the cops are crackin' heads again. I respect that the demonstrator's are trying to draw attention to the wealth gap problem, but I feel this particular movement is futile and infiltrated and corrupted, so excuse me if I don't pitch a tent - even if MIchael Moore was there.

I mentioned before here somewhere in another thread that this itty, bitty bank transfer movement is going to be inconsequential to the big ass banks. The vast majority of the money in those banks is owned by by the 1%. I bank at a credit union, but they bank at Wells Fargo.

Oh yeah, I often think those Southpark guys are pretty funny, but it seemed to me that this episode was to discredit the protesters.

Re: Bank Transfer Day chump - it's not nothing:
CUNA estimates that at least 650,000 consumers across the nation have joined credit unions since Sept. 29 (the day Bank of America unveiled its now-rescinded $5 monthly debit card fee). Also during that time, CUNA estimates that credit unions have added $4.5 billion in new savings accounts, likely from the new members and existing members shifting their funds.

Prominent Silicon Valley businessman to divest Bank of America funds

By Tracy Seipel

A prominent member of Silicon Valley's exclusive "1 percent" club is pulling his money out of Bank of America and cutting all ties with the bank -- and he hopes others will follow his lead.

Mike Fox Sr., a beer magnate and well-known philanthropist, is set to announce Friday that he is divesting his long-held personal Bank of America account, which contains several hundred thousand dollars, in an effort to promote social and economic justice.

Fox said Thursday that he has also asked his executive team to move a $4 million-plus line of credit held by M.E. Fox & Co. from Bank of America to another institution. Fox's firm is a 46-year-old wholesale distributor of beer, water, New Age beverages and Red Bull energy drink.

"I think the only way I can influence people is through my personal example," said Fox, 75, who called the amount he was divesting "rather small compared to the egregiousness" of Bank of America's slow response in modifying home mortgages.

Second veteran injured in 'Occupy Oakland' violence
Friday, November 04, 2011

by Tihanna McCleese

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- There are fresh charges of police brutality against a war veteran arrested near an Occupy Oakland demonstration.

The veteran, 32-year-old Kayvan Sabeghi, underwent surgery on Friday for a ruptured spleen. Before he went into surgery, Sabeghi told his sister that he was walking to his home near Frank Ogawa Plaza when he was stopped by police, hit in the abdomen four times and then arrested and taken to jail where he could not receive medical treatment.

Sabeghi is a former Army ranger who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sabeghi's sister Shoole Sabeghi said her brother dedicated his life to serving his country and that he did not deserve the treatment he received Wednesday night.

"I am absolutely furious," Sabeghi said. "I'm absolutely furious at the way they treated my little brother. I'm so mad. They hurt him and then they refused to help him."

Sabeghi underwent surgery at Highland for about two hours. Doctors tried to repair his spleen, which was apparently ruptured after Sabeghi was beaten and arrested.

"Just because you have the power to do so does't mean you have the right to do so," Sabeghi said. "You can't treat people that way. If someone is injured...you have to take care of them."

His sister said Sabeghi spent the night in a jail cell and was refused medical treatment for nearly 24 hours.

"At one point he asked for assistance and they told him to stop taking heroin," Sabeghi said. "Another time they told him he was an alcholic and a diabetic, neither of which are true."

It's the second time in two weeks that an Iraq war veteran has been injured in violence between protesters and police.

Sabeghi was suffering from internal bleeding and vomiting. Sabeghi's sister charges Alameda County deputies with not helping him and said they have not heard back from authorities.

In a statement to ABC7, the Alameda County Sheriff's Department said they have heard claims that Sabeghi didn't receive medical attention and are launching an investigation, which will include reviewing video from Wednesday's incident.

The Oakland Police Department said they are also launching an investigation.

Sabeghi is out of surgery and is recovering in the intensive care unit.

The following statement was released by the Oakland Police Department:
The Oakland Police Department is conducting an investigation regarding Kayvan Sabeghi and the circumstances of his arrest on November 3, 2011. This case, as are all reported or alleged instances of force, is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crimes Section at (510) 238-3821.
