Scandal around Skripal case related to Syria - Russia’s Foreign Ministry

March 17, 18:10 UTC+3

"А new spiral of anti-Russia campaign has surfaced embodied in statements of the UK prime minister," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said

The anti-Russia scandal whipped up by the United Kingdom around the case of former GRU military intelligence colonel Sergei Skripal has a connection to Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Rossiya’24 TV channel on Saturday.

"The world should have been shown somehow that in fact Russia is not a peacemaker, but it plays a some sort of own game. Immediately, a new spiral of anti-Russia campaign has surfaced embodied in statements of the UK prime minister," she said. "It is the first track linking these two stories (Russia’s activity in Syria and Skripal case - TASS)."

"The anti-Russian campaign is obvious," she said. "The second track is an alleged theme of chemical weapons.".

Syria - The East-Ghouta-Afrin Exchange Is Complete - Where Will The SAA Go Next?

March 25, 2018

After the Syrian army had taken all rural parts of east-Ghouta three pockets of densely upbuild areas were left in terrorist hands. Negotiations had started about transfer of the armed men to Idleb governorate in the north. Some 100,000 people moved from the besieged areas to the Syrian government side. Surrounded by widely superior forces, devoid of human shields and without any chance of relief the terrorist groups are now giving up one by one.

First to surrender were Ahrar al-Sham fighters who held the Harasta suburb. 1,500 of them and their families, in total 4,500 people were transferred to Idleb by government buses. They had to give up all heavy weapons and were only allowed to carry one hand-weapons and no ammunition.

Next to give up were Faylaq al-Rahman who held the southern pocket. While the leadership of the group was negotiating with the government side some of the group fired barrages of missiles into Damascus city and killed dozens of people. Shortly thereafter two dozen of foreigners who had been fighting with Faylaq al-Rahman turned up dead. Having eliminated those irreconcilable elements Faylaq al-Rahman burned its headquarter and agreed to be transferred. The men and their families are now being evacuated to Afrin, a formerly Kurdish area in the north-west which Turkish supported gangs recently captured. The total of this transfer were some 7,000 people.

The last area in to be taken in east-Ghouta is Douma. It is held by Jaish al-Islam, a group of Wahhabi Islamists with intense support from Saudi Arabia. But Jaish al Islam will not want to go to Idleb. They have long fought with other Islamists and especially with HTS, aka Jabhat al-Nusra, which now rules in most of Idleb. Jaish al-Islam still tries to negotiate some autonomy for Douma but the Syrian government will not have any of that. It can not and will not allow a pocket of 'autonomous' Saudi financed Jihadis a few miles from the capital. The group will have to give up completely or agree to be transferred elsewhere. The only alternative is imminent death by Syrian artillery and bombardment. News today is that an agreement has been found but details are not yet available.

The Syrian Arab Army has cleaned the east-Ghouta pocket in a less than a month. This was only possible because Turkey had a great incentive to keep other areas, especially in Idleb, reasonably quiet. To allow Turkey to take the Afrin canton from unruly Kurdish forces was thus in exchange for east-Ghouta.

The U.S. had plans to attack Syria during the east-Ghouta operation. The Russian military sent intense warnings that it would retaliate against U.S. ships and other platforms if those would fire cruise missiles against Syria. The warnings were successful in deterring the Pentagon but not the White House hawks:

According to two National Security Council officials, Mattis has ignored McMaster’s requests for military options that would have allowed the U.S. to strike Eastern Gouta, in Syria, ...

Continues...

Thinking about White Helmets. Wondering if it is possible that there is some truth to both points of view. A shocking thought, I know.

I'm aware that even thinking about this already lumps me in the pro-assad camp in the internet wars. However, I've decided to continue thinking, anyway.

I'm also aware that simply entertaining the idea that there might be actual White Helmet-wearing first-responders in areas where infrastructure has collapsed puts me in the other camp. I'm stubborn, though. Keyboard warriors be damned.

It is not impossible to conceive that there are good guys donning White Helmets, committing selfless acts. It is also not impossible to conceive of bad guys donning White Helmets to commit terrible acts. The White Helmets are not a baseball team, they're people. Some may be first-responders, some may be posing as first-responders.

This would matter on the ground. If the guys in White Helmets show up, you would hope they're the good ones.

On the internet, it matters less. On the internet, White Helmets are a weapon in an information war. You could ignore any evidence of good White Helmets, maybe dismiss any evidence of good White Helmets as a pr show. Conversely, you could ignore any evidence of bad White Helmets. All White Helmets on the internet are lumped together, they're either good or bad.

Of course I'm not on the ground in Syria, and have never been. But if 82's panic comes to America, I may find myself in a similar situation here one day. So I think it might help to think these things through. You never know.

Of course not; they recruit, and people volunteer, just like a US-backed proxy army will get plenty of sincere "raw material" jihadist volunteers.

In these forum pages is a video (can't find it just now) of a young volunteer who joined and was disappointed that all the White Helmets did was make movies of them "rescuing" themselves.

Of course, the White Helmets being founded in Britian by a white ex-mil Brit, having HQ in London, being funded with $100,000,000 (that's one hundred million) by US/UK, sharing numerous personnel and building facilities with armed ISIS fighters, and all the while being the MSM's only news source in Syria could just be coincidence.

Elvis, you and I, we're sitting in front of our computer screens, reading, typing, watching videos.

I'm saying: Let's say there are people who are actually out saving lives. You may not believe it. But let's just say. I don't care whether they're wearing White Helmets or not, or who is sponsoring them. If they're not out saving lives but claiming to be, then sure, fuck 'em.

Maybe a Syrian revolution was hijacked at birth, maybe it was sponsored from the start. I'm not going to say that Assad shouldn't be gone, I think he should be.But I'm not for regime change, I'm for no more regimes. An impossible dream? perhaps.

I'm also not going to say that what other nations do is not my business and I should stay out of it. I'm going to be critical of all authority, everywhere.

Anyway, I'm not trying to convince you that what you believe is wrong. I'm saying that I'm keeping an open mind, and I'm not going to worry about whether or not that looks stupid to people on the internet. In person, either, but especially not on the internet.

I imagine there will be a lot of push back against withdrawing US troops form Syria, both from within and without...

US president is said to stand alone in haste to withdraw troops from war-torn country, to dismay of security agencies and allies

A phone call Wednesday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump grew tense over Israeli objections to US plans to leave Syria, US administration officials said Wednesday, adding that Trump wants to pull out all troops within six months to the dismay of the country’s main security agencies and allies.

A short statement from the White House early Wednesday said Netanyahu and Trump had discussed “recent developments in the Middle East” during their phone conversation, without clarifying what developments were addressed or what was said.

It said that “President Trump reiterated the commitment of the United States to Israel’s security,” and added that “the two leaders agreed to continue their close coordination on countering Iran’s malign influence and destabilizing activities.”

And there she blows, what a shock!

Dozens dead in possible gas attack in Syria; regime denies allegation

By Steve Almasy, CNN April 8, 2018

(CNN)Several Syrian activist groups Saturday reported that a brutal attack on the remnants of the rebel-held city of Douma in Eastern Ghouta left dozens of civilians dead and scores wounded.

The groups -- including the White Helmets, the Douma Coordination Committee and the Ghouta Media Center -- said toxic gas inside barrel bombs dropped by helicopters over Douma caused people to suffocate and choke.

Syrian state news agency SANA cited an "official source" who denied the allegations, saying the reports were a "blatant attempt to hinder the army's advance" into what the news agency described as a "collapsing terrorist" stronghold.

An official with the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) told CNN that doctors in eastern Ghouta have told him they were seeing patients who were convulsing from side to side and some appeared to be paralyzed and unresponsive.

Many of the people had been staying in underground shelters.

CNN could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the images.

The UOSSM, citing doctors and activists on the ground, released a statement saying a massive suspected chemical or gas attack was reported and at least 25 people were killed and 500 wounded.

CNN's Frederik Pleitgen in Damascus said there were heavy air strikes in the area all day and rebels shelled the Syrian capital.

Meanwhile, a US State Department official told CNN, "We have seen multiple, very disturbing reports this afternoon regarding another possible CW (chemical weapons) attack near a hospital in Douma, Syria."

"As we've said, Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the brutal targeting of countless Syrians with chemical weapons. Russia's protection of the Assad regime and failure to stop the use of chemical weapons in Syria calls into question its commitment to resolving the overall crisis."

A later statement from State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US continued to "closely follow disturbing reports" of the alleged attack.

"Reports from a number of contacts and medical personnel on the ground indicate a potentially high number of casualties, including among families hiding in shelters. These reports, if confirmed, are horrifying and demand an immediate response by the international community," Nauert said.

CNN's Fred Pleitgen, Mohammed Tawfeeq, Eyad Kourdi, Gul Tuysuz, Daniel Nikbakht, Jen Deaton, Barbara Starr, Elise Labott and Susannah Cullinane contributed to this report.

Netanyahu Had 'Tense' Call With Trump Over U.S. Plan to Leave Syria, White House Officials Say
The Associated Press and Haaretz Apr 06, 2018 1:04 PM Updated: 1:36 PM

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a 'tense' phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to two White House officials.

The conversation revolved around Netanyahu's concerns that the U.S. will withdraw from Syria and allow Israel's enemies, Iran and its affiliate militias, to gain a further foothold in the neighboring country, said the officials.

A White House statement released following the call said Netanyahu and Trump spoke about "recent developments in the Middle East," and that the president "reiterated the commitment of the United States to Israel’s security and the two leaders agreed to continue their close coordination on countering Iran’s malign influence and destabilizing activities."

Last week, Trump caught the U.S. State Department off guard when he proclaimed the U.S. was "coming out of Syria, like, very soon. Let the other people take care of it now."

Contradicting Trump, the State Department said it was unaware of any plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.

Explained Donald Trump Wants Out of Syria. Israel Thinks That’s a Problem

The U.S. and Israel are usually on the same page when it comes to policy in the Middle East, but on Syria Trump and Netanyahu are increasingly at odds

“We don’t have any limits on our action in Syria,” Netanyahu told reporters.
...

Israelis fear that the defeat of the Islamic State, while welcome, leaves in place Iran, an enemy, and Russia, a country that is friendly to Israel but whose interests are not as aligned as the United States. Russia, notably, has been Iran’s de facto ally in Syria.

The U.S. presence, comparatively, is limited, but simply by maintaining a presence, the United States signals that it has Israel’s back — freeing Israel to take action, as it did in February when Israel retaliated with airstrikes on Iranian targets in Syria after an Iranian drone entered Israeli airspace.

That becomes a much shakier proposition absent a U.S. presence, said Moshe Maoz, Israel’s preeminent Syria expert.

This deep state organized fake chemical attack clearly is meant to be the catalyst for a US attack on Syria, will it succeed?

Trump blames Putin for backing ‘Animal Assad’

By MATTHEW NUSSBAUM 04/08/2018

President Donald Trump on Sunday leveled his most direct criticism yet at Vladimir Putin, taking to Twitter to say the Russian president bears responsibility for a deadly chemical weapons attack in Syria, even as Trump weighs ending the U.S. presence in the war-torn country.

“Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria,” Trump wrote in a pair of tweets Sunday morning. “Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price … to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!”

The tweets came after reports that a chemical attack left dozens of Syrians dead in a rebel-held town. The U.S. and other United Nations member states have called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the attack on Monday afternoon, Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said in a statement Sunday.

Trump warns Assad: 'Big price to pay' for fatal Syria attack

By JONATHAN LEMIR Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned a "mindless CHEMICAL attack" in Syria that killed women and children, called Syrian President Bashar Assad an "animal" and delivered a rare personal criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting the Damascus government.

As Washington worked to verify the claim by Syrian opposition activists and rescuers that poison gas was used, Trump said there would be a "big price to pay" for resorting to outlawed weapons of mass destruction. A top White House aide, asked about the possibility of a U.S. missile strike in response, said, "I wouldn't take anything off the table."

I have a feeling that Russia will not sit back and let a US reprisal go unpunished, dangerous situation...

Russia warns of 'most serious consequences' if US strikes Syria over alleged chemical attack on its citizens

CONOR FINNEGAN and PATRICK REEVELL April 9, 2018

Russia is warning the U.S. against any “military intervention” in Syria over the government's alleged chemical attack against civilians this weekend, saying any such response would be “unacceptable” and lead to the “most serious consequences”.

The foreign ministry in Moscow also says in a statement on its website that allegations of the chemical attack are “fabricated,” suggesting the claims were invented by rebel forces and the Syrian Civil Defense known as the White Helmets.

“It is necessary to warn again that military intervention under invented and fabricated pretexts in Syria, where at the request of the lawful government there are Russian military personnel, is absolutely unacceptable and can lead to the most serious consequences,” the statement reads. “The aim of these false speculations, that have no basis, is to shield the terrorists and the irreconcilable radical opposition, who reject a political solution, at the same time while trying to justify possible armed strikes from outside.”

The alleged attack on Saturday killed 40 in the rebel-held town of Douma, multiple opposition and rescue groups including told The Associated Press, which was unable to independently verify the reports.

UN Security Council to meet at Russia’s initiative on Monday

April 08,

The United Nations Security Council will gather for a Russia-initiated meeting on Monday to discuss threats to international peace, Fyodor Strzhizhovsky, a spokesman for the Russian mission to the United Nations, told TASS on Sunday.

"The meeting initiated by Russia will begin at three in the afternoon (22:00 Moscow time). It will be followed by another Security Council meeting," he said.

The United Kingdom’s mission to the United Nations said on Twitter that nine countries, namely the UK, France, the United States, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Kuwait, Peru and Cote d’Ivoire had called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over an alleged chemical attack in Syria.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected as fake news Saturday’s reports on an alleged chemical attack carried out by the Syrian government forces in Douma near Damascus. Allegations about the use of chemical agents by the Syrian government forces are aimed at justifying external military strikes, the ministry said. The Russian defense ministry also refuted reports that the Syrian forces had used chemical weapons in Douma in Eastern Ghouta.

Syrian Airbase in Homs Province Hit by Missile Attack

A T-4 airbase in the Syrian province of Homs has been hit by a missile strike, local media reported, suspecting the United States. However, Pentagon did not confirm the reports of involvement.

A Syrian T-4 airbase in the Homs province has been hit by rocket fire, according to SANA news. According to the agency, the strike caused casualties. It was also reported that the Syrian Air Defense Force opened fire on the upcoming missiles and intercepted several.

An informed source told Sputnik on Monday that the Syrian Air Defense Force shot down the missiles. "The Syrian Air Defense Force has destroyed a few missiles, which attacked the T-4 air base. The missiles fell in the vicinity of the airfield," the source said.

In contradiction with SANA news' reports, the source said that there were no casualties as a result of a missile strike, and the airbase did not suffer any material damage.

There is an unconfirmed footage circulating on social media which allegedly shows unidentified jets flying over Lebanon toward Syria.

There was no immediate confirmation on the origin of the objects or whether they were airplanes or missiles. This is also still not clear who's behind the attack.

According to Syria’s SANA news agency, the attack might have been carried out by the United States.

However, a Pentagon representative told Sputnik that the US Defense Department is aware of the alleged US missile strike, but did not confirm the reports.

"We are aware of the reports, we have nothing to confirm," a Pentagon representative said commenting on the reports of the US involvement in the attack.

In turn, Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen broadcaster reported that the missiles were coming from the Mediterranean Sea through Lebanon.

Yup, apparently Israeli...

Israeli Jets Hit Syria’s T-4 Airbase

April 9, 2018

Syria’s T-4 airbase was subjected to an attack early on Monday, with Moscow and Damascus accusing the Zionist entity of hitting the military airport in Homs.

SANA news agency reported that the Syrian air defenses have confronted a missile attack on T-4 airport and shot down eight missiles.

It quoted a military source as saying that the missiles were fired from the Lebanese airspace by Israeli F-15 fighter jets.

The attack left a number of martyrs and injured, the source added.

For its part, Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said that it had been two Israeli warplanes that had attacked the airbase in Homs province.

“On April 9, from 03:25 to 03:53 Moscow time, two Israeli Air Force F-15 jets, carried out an airstrike by two guided missiles on the T-4 airfield from the Lebanese territory and without entering Syria’s airspace.”

According to the Russian military, the strikes were carried out from Lebanese airspace.

Five out of eight strikes, carried out by the Israeli F-15 jets, were destroyed by Syrian air defenses, the ministry said, according to Sputnik.

“Three missiles reached the western part of the airfield. There are no Russian [military] advisers among those injured.”
