DING! DING! DING!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/de ... ives-saudi

Satellite broadcasts of the US TV shows Desperate Housewives and Late Show With David Letterman are doing more to persuade Saudi youth to reject violent jihad than hundreds of millions of dollars of US government propaganda, informants have told the American embassy in Jeddah.

Broadcast uncensored and with Arabic subtitles alongside sitcoms such as Friends on Saudi Arabia's MBC 4 channel, the shows are being allowed as part of the kingdom's "war of ideas" against extremist elements. According to a secret cable titled "David Letterman: Agent of Influence", they have been proving more effective than Washington's main propaganda tool, the US-funded al-Hurra TV news channel.

Al-Hurra has shown lengthy interviews with US politicians, including George Bush, but has run into problems with locally hired journalists. On one occasion it broadcast a call to arms against Israel by Hezbollah, which was not the plan when the channel was launched across the Middle East in 2004 after the Iraq invasion.

Diplomats said they believed the allure of actors such as Eva Longoria, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer meant commercial TV had a far greater impact than al-Hurra which, according to one report, has cost US taxpayers up to $500m (£316m).

"It's still all about the war of ideas here, and the American programming on MBC and Rotana [a channel part-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation] is winning over ordinary Saudis in a way that al-Hurra and other US propaganda never could," two Saudi media executives told a US official in a meeting at a Jeddah branch of Starbucks. "Saudis are now very interested in the outside world and everybody wants to study in the US if they can. They are fascinated by US culture in a way they never were before," the May 2009 cable says.

The popularity of the channels is particularly surprising given Rotana broadcasts Fox News, the rightwing News Corp channel that takes a hard line against Islamic radicalism and has strongly supported US military intervention in the Middle East.

A senior al-Arabiya news channel director said US programming on MBC 4 and MBC 5 had become the most popular in Saudi Arabia and "told us that this programming is also very popular in remote, conservative corners of the country, where he said 'you no longer see Bedouins, but kids in western dress' who are now interested in the outside world".

The diplomats told Washington that certain themes in American movies seemed to appeal to the Saudi audience: heroic honesty in the face of corruption (George Clooney in Michael Clayton), supportive behaviour in relationships (an unspecified drama that was repeated during an Eid holiday featuring an American husband dealing with a drunk wife who smashed cars and crockery when she wasn't assaulting him and their child), and respect for the law over self-interest (Al Pacino and Robin Williams in Insomnia).

In further evidence of the advance of US media in Saudi Arabia, the same cable revealed that one of Rupert Murdoch's sons held talks with the board of al-Eqtisadiah, a Saudi Arabian daily newspaper, about a deal to publish an Arabic version of the Wall Street Journal. The meeting was said to have been called at the behest of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a billionaire businessman and shareholder in News Corporation. The 35% Bin Talal-owned SRMG media group, which owns al-Eqtisadiah, was also trying to win a contract to publish the International Herald Tribune uncensored in Saudi Arabia, the cable reveals.

Also, as far as I know, only about 0.1% of all the cables Wikileaks allegedly has in its possession have so far been released (at least to the press - is anyone actually researching this first-hand on any of the mirror sites?) And Assange's lawyer has described as "thermo-nuclear" the information contained in that safety cache, to be released in the event of anything happening to him*.

So it's early days yet. I am no means 100% convinced either that he is entirely genuine or that he isn't being "played", but I also won't condemn him as a shill or an agent - least of all a Zionist shill or agent - until the remaining 99.99% of the files can be read by people less dependably power-worshipping than the Editors-in-Chief of the Guardian, the NYT and Der Spiegel.

nathan28: Actually, Lieberman and friends of his like Lynne Cheney (you remember they put out that McCarthyite list of pro-terrorist academics after 9/11?) going rabid on the NY Times may be the only hope to wake up Teh Libruls to this assault on, well, them. Among everyone else.

vanlose: looks like you fucked up. Two of those pictures set me off to extreme, blind anger every time I run into them. Seeing them feels like a visceral attack, and I would never display them even to attack them (one can provide a link instead). Apologize and forgive yourself.

.

As for Duff, Sabrosky, Madsen and other the other intellectual non-entities Alice favors, they're not war-mongers, but the shared mentality is military. The practical upshot of their bilge (motto: "I Don't See Waldo - It's a Trap!") is coincidentally in line with the State Department commandment:

Good Citizens Don't Read The Cables!

.

Don't read'em. If you do, spin whatever you like. Or call them old news. Say they paint a harmless, gossipy picture of the empire. In the next moment, be sure to scream: Danger! Danger! Also, speak as though all 250,000 documents have been released and you've combed through the whole lot. Whatever you say, be definitive.

The other practical message of the "Wikileaks is THEM" propaganda is that we shouldn't give a shit if Assange is silenced and Manning hangs, because it's all a show and they deserve it.

That's their position, as a battle goes down with press and Internet freedom on the line.

Given this coincidence and using Alice's variety of cui bono logic (or lupercal's - though his targets differ), I guess that means we can add Duff etc. to the One Plot Orchestrating Everything (Including On This Board).

.

And remember, kids, the most important priority is never to be fooled by THEM. Don't fall into the trap of believing ANYTHING, except what you already know as your Invincible Principles. Do NOT suspend judgement. Open minds are unprotected minds!

point taken, mac, only thing with duff and his ilk is that they know whodunnit. and reading the accompanying text and the image caption, i find the entire context of the thing even more disturbing, albeit in a different way. but let me quote the passage in full, image included, and with my emphases before i go on.

GORDON DUFF: IN MOTION: THE PLOT TO DESTROY THE UNITED STATES
November 11, 2010 posted by Gordon Duff · 387 Comments

SEE IT COMING AND STOP IT, EVEN IF IT COSTS YOU EVERYTHING
By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor

“The 2010 election had one purpose, war with Iran, even if the risk is world conflict and the real loser, no matter what happens on the battlefield is the United States.”

Plans are in motion for a “false flag” attack on America. Iran will be blamed, everyone knows that and Iran will be totally innocent. This is the last thing Iran would ever want. The most likely scenario is a nuclear attack. Two bombs are missing, bombs built by Israel in South Africa and lost long ago. These were supposedly Saddam’s bombs. Now we are told Iran has them. Israel has had them all along and the fear, they may be inside the United States already.

The Israeli game with these weapons is one of the worst kept secrets in the world and has already cost the deaths of many. It will take nothing short of the detonation of one of this Hiroshima sized Israeli nukes to push America into Israel’s war with Iran, much as hunting for these nukes which Israel informed President Bush were in Iraq, led “the decider” to making one of the many blunders of his career. Our next 9/11 will be nuclear.

The purpose will be to push America into a 20 year war that will destroy Iran and Pakistan, take oil to over $300 per barrel and collapse the dollar and Euro. Iran isn’t Iraq of 2003, toothless and starving. This will be America’s last military adventure, and the end of America’s place in the world as we know it. We know the details of the proposed military campaign and the military and political leaders who support it are the worst imaginable incompetents and traitors.

Invading Iran is an impossible task for America. Other than there be no reason whatsoever to engage in such folly, something that, of recent years, seems to concern fewer and fewer Americans. Turn on the TV, if the “rodeo clown” says “wipe ‘em out” then we do it.

Invading Iran is an impossibility for America. Going to the moon was easier. No matter how senseless, how impossible, the decision has been made, more in Tel Aviv than Washington, for sure, but one that will be obeyed.

There are only two scenarios that can fulfill the nightmare Israel and her shiny new congress have in store with us. One is a preemptive nuclear attack on Iran and the other full scale total war with up to 500,000 Americans being drafted into the military.

FAILURE OF THE “VOLUNTEER ARMY”…..AS ISRAEL SEES IT

especially one of African American ancestry. Anyone who doesn’t think the real heart of American politics has always been racism is a liar. Family values means “white” family values. Decades ago, and even more recently during our last presidential election, African Americans were represented as animals, “goyim” to the Jews. Now we play “Kill the camel jockey.” Is this why the Christianized army we sent to Afghanistan murders innocent civilians for sport?

An America in total economic collapse will require another “decider” and more “Patriot Acts,” even more totalitarian and vicious than the last, that and an end to the even farcical elections that are now inundated with drug money and cash from US based foreign corporations.

This is the plan and a criminal gang in America, some in government and the military but more behind the scenes, “banksters” and media moguls, many with ties to Israel, are working feverishly to bring it about. However clever the planners may think they are, their mechanations can be tracked through the media, the army of “Wolf Blitzers” that “work” the American people with the subtlety of carny shills.

WHY DO THEY [i.e. the j-ws] HATE US SO MUCH?
Why would anyone want to destroy America, kill millions, leave the nation that has been there to save the world over and over a virtual wasteland? If you think America’s castrated government or the military, now relegated to acting as virtual mercenaries for drug lords, oil cartels and bizarre Zionist plots, have the will or ability to stop what has already begun, you have not been paying attention for some time. While the “circus of deception” went on, the utterly phony “war on terror,” imaginary enemies, the 9/11 disaster, orchestrated by Israel and its puppets, Israel has decided that America is going to war with Iran. The new congress, the one Israel openly boasts is under their total control, will make it happen, it was why they were put there. The upcoming war will leave the United States crippled, castrated, a “third world” nuclear power like the old Soviet Union. The plot isn’t against Iran and Pakistan, that’s just an excuse. The real enemy is what is left of a free and democratic America.

The real goal is to end America’s leadership role in the world.

Israel has plans for Russia, China and India, especially India, to rule the world with them pulling the strings. America had been their “milk cow” for some time, now that cow is going to slaughter.

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2010/11/11 ... ed-states/

now correct me if i'm wrong here, but reading that passage, with the image and its caption "RACE HATRED, AMERICAN KRYPTONITE" suggests to me, that part of the ZOG -plan to destroy AMERICA-the-pure is to incite race-hatred. that is, if you fall for that, you've once again been fooled by the j-w.

now that is one nefarious plan, don't you think? they're behind everything, both the civil-rights movement and the kkk.

that's it from me on WL as a zionist plot. (for now, at least.)

Joe Lieberman: New York Times Should Be Investigated For Publishing WikiLeaks Cables

Senator Joe Lieberman said that the New York Times may have committed a crime by accepting and publishing the State Department cables from WikiLeaks, and should be investigated for potential violations of the Espionage Act.

Not relevant to this thread. But since it's here, I'll just register my disagreement with just about everything Mr. Booth says in this article. He's an idiot and ignorant, too. First, nobody watches al-Hurra and that's pretty much all that's worth saying about it. Second, it's true that the MBC channels from Saudi Arabia broadcast American tripe 24/7 throughout the Middle East, and believe me, shows like Friends and Desperate Housewives and Criminal Minds (my favorite) and Oprah are fun to watch but for reliable information about the world the vast majority of Arabs turn to trusted sources of news and documentaries and talk shows, with al Jazeera being the most watched. The only positive effect of American tv shows I can discern is that almost all Arabs tend to distinguish between American people, about whom they hold generally positive views (in some cases quite idealized), and the US government, which is viewed very negatively. FOX is already available throughout certain satellite providers and I find it fascinating that even some older people I know who are very Westernized and pro-American are revolted by FOX News' grating bias and ignorance. Widening the audience for FOX News among Arabs is a sure way to stimulate even more resentment and suspicion against the US government. For those who are interested in the subject, a much more accurate and serious overview from 2008 can be found here.

Actually, it's the opposite. What I'm saying and what others are saying (what is an "intellectual non-entity"? what is an "intellectual entity"? Which one are you?) is READ the leaks, and especially the tiny fraction of them that are being boomed around the world by the same big media that sold the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and is now targeting Iran.

THINK about the odds that all these media would have had the chance to sift through tens of thousands of cables in record time to publish the same needle-in-a-haystack allegations, and critically EXAMINE the substance of the message being transmitted. COMPARE it to similar (or identical) messages that these "leaks" serve to amplify and confirm, despite the fact that in neither case are these messages credible or substantiated. NOTE the barely-contained glee of certain parties at their "vindication" by the "leaks". ASK yourself who has been relentlessly pushing this very same message, and what this is really setting the stage for: a fair, negotiated deal with Iran that respects that nation's legal rights? an end to government secrecy and a new commitment to the free flow of information on the internet? A more peaceful, just world? Or the exact opposite?

As for "being military" certainly not all those who have serious doubts about this whole circus are from a military background. At least you acknowledge that none are war-mongers; on the contrary. Furthermore, experience of military and intelligence operations can allow one to pick up on certain clues that others might miss, that the real story is not what we are being told it is.

You're saying it is, and that we should BELIEVE what we are told, even by serial liars and experts in deception and by the mysterious Mr. Assange, even when so many things about the story ring false, or be ridiculed and insulted by you and the likes of Nathan28. I know you won't be persuaded by anything I say. It's ok, really. I just want to make sure that these questions and observations are available for those who are willing to consider them.

You get a bunch of people. You pay them overtime. You sit them in a room twelve or fifteen hours a day with boxes with sheets of paper and have them skim through documents. You have them flag interesting ones or relevant ones. You pull the flagged ones and look at them again. Better yet, you use computers instead of paper and you do it a lot faster and without papercuts. You find the "best" ones and give them to the reporters and editors and run them by the Mockingbird dude in your office.

I don't know how long it'd take to go through somewhere between 250,000 and 750,000 pages of stuff, but I can tell you that if you were the NY Times Der Speigel Guardian Axis of Evil and ready to drop an international incident on the public, which just happens to feature an egomaniacal protagonist who's going to do everything in his power to get his latest haircut plastered across every newsstand in the world, thereby pushing you into the PR stratosphere and sending your ad sales into outerspace, then, yeah, you get a bunch of cash and wave it in front of a repographics vendor and he gets your three hundred boxes of cables scanned and word-searchable onto a DVD in a week.

Instead of THINKING that you KNOW the ANSWER to your hypothetical SCENARIO maybe you should actually try ASKING someone who has an inkling about HOW this typically happens.

I don't think all the media hype over Wikileaks is the strategy TPMB would take if it were in fact a real threat. Ask yourself: why Wikileaks? Cablegate looks a lot like Cryptome fare, and the helicopter attack video a lot like something we've seen many times on Liveleaks. After all, like someone here said not so long ago, "the whole Internet is a 'wiki-leak' - why the focus on this one site? This is major spectacle, like 9/11. Comparing Julian to Osama is not so far-fetched, I don't think.

§ § §

BREAKING: WikiLeaks Being Used to Justify "Patriot Act" Legislation For Internet
Eric Blair
Activist Post

Senator Mitch McConnell called Assange a "high-tech terrorist" on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday and said, "if it‘s found that Assange hasn’t violated the law, then the law should be changed."

Over the weekend, an insightful article by Zen Gardner exposed how WikiLeaks resembles an establishment creation. The article correctly pointed out that the WikiLeaks storyline was conforming nicely to the elite's problem-reaction-solution method, with the solution of more tyranny for our safety.

WikiLeaks is being used to bring in the agenda on so many levels, but most importantly by setting the precedent of shutting down websites for politically "dangerous" content. Gardner writes:

After all, if information is now the enemy, we must carefully police any and every aspect of this dangerous medium -- all for the safety and protection of 'we the people.'

Oh, we’ll still have the Internet, just like you can still fly. You’ll just have to be on the 'approved' list, screened, stamped, zapped, mugged and molested if you want to get 'on the net.' No biggie. Thanks Julian -- job well done.

First, let's be clear, the 250,000 pages of cables amounted to some geopolitical Jerry Springer he-said-she-said nonsense to make countries look petty and stupid. They revealed nothing new that wasn't already known or well suspected. The information simply stoked existing flames by airing geopolitical dirty laundry, nothing more -- no secret weapons, no major arms deals, no tactical locations of troops, and no revealing the ID of secret agents, etc.

Yet, the government has used its corporate muscle to illegally limit access to WikiLeaks. It was recently revealed that Amazon, the server host for WikiLeaks, caved to political pressure to drop the website. Then, in dictatorial fashion, PayPal removed its service for donations to WikiLeaks, and now their bank account has been frozen. And all this comes a week after the shutdown of 80-plus websites for "copyright infringement," apparently in preparation for passing the "Blacklist" bill.

Now, Gardner's weekend speculation and McConnell's call for action has turned into political reality. The Hill reports today that Senators unveil anti-WikiLeaks legislation, which seems to be a sort-of "Patriot Act" for the Internet. It's astonishing how fast these guys can write legislation when major events occur. And again, it's tyranny-saurus rex, Joe Lieberman, leading the charge with scandal-ridden Ensign (R-Nev.) and empty-suit Scott Brown (R-Mass.). Ensign was quoted:

WikiLeaks is not a whistleblower website and Assange is not a journalist.

That, we agree with. Yet, therein lies the concern for establishing new Internet rules of what can and can't be discussed, and who qualifies as a "journalist." Look, Assange is clearly either a kinda-smart "useful idiot" or a brilliant insider to the elite. He is certainly not a genuine whistleblower. Admittedly, though, for those of us who hoped he was the real thing, the elite have used some savvy tactics to boost WikiLeaks' rogue credibility in order to confuse us.

The White House has sent down a warning to government agencies to restrict employee access to WikiLeaks in order to make Assange and crew appear dangerously off limits. Apparently, this warning has already trickled down to "potential" government employees as well. It was revealed that the State Department warned Columbia University students who may apply for a Federal job:

DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter.

In other words, the Thought Police are out in full force telling job-hungry students to not apply if they discuss current events if authorities label those events dangerous or harmful to America. Soon, they'll most likely publicly fire a mid-level employee who went over the line to prove how serious they are. After all, they desperately need to keep the slaves on the plantation.

Furthermore, an Interpol arrest warrant has been issued for Julian Assange for shady rape charges, making him an internationally "wanted" man.

And Assange is playing the clever but likable villain part so well, too, claiming to have an encrypted "insurance" file in case anyone kills him or terminates the website. Assange is the perfect international man of mystery with the dark shades in press conferences; endless mainstream media interviews with his exotic accent and short temper; and his famous silver-blond locks. What a great show they're putting on for us. I'm sure the movie industry is already clamoring for the rights to the script.

In the meantime, it has become the typical political game show. Only in America could Cablegate become such a divide-and-conquer partisan issue. The Right have successfully defined WikiLeaks as a dangerous terrorist organization and desire the assassination of its leader, while the Left defends the public's right to knowledge, but disparages the damage the documents may cause, thus setting up the obvious bipartisan compromise: tighter control and surveillance of the Internet.

It will go down like this: the Right's extreme calls for Assange's execution will give the establishment the publicly defensible compromise to at least shut down their website by way of pressuring their service providers, etc. And the wimpy Left will compromise by letting it happen, while Assange will be allowed to remain alive and free.

It fits ever so perfectly for them to extend the definition of an "enemy combatant" to a website that publishes "anti-government" material. Enter Attorney General Eric Holder, who has authorized "significant" action into the probe of WikiLeaks. Can't you just smell the tyranny coming to the Internet?

Ron Paul said it best in his book Revolution: A Manifesto: "Truth is treason in an empire of lies." Paul reiterated this principle of transparency in a recent interview. Paul said we need more WikiLeaks if we expect to live in a free society:

'In a free society we're supposed to know the truth,' Paul insisted. 'In a society where truth becomes treason, then we're in big trouble.'

Given the angry calls for action and today's developments of government proposals, not to mention the blight of Internet legislation already on the table, we will likely get the exact opposite of the free-flow of information that Paul is advocating. In fact, if history is any indicator, get ready for nothing less than the Patriot Act for the Internet!

Re: The Wikileaks Question

Postby nathan28 » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:44 pm

Bracketing his antisemitism, does anyone not see the process of thought at work with Duff?

1. Duff thinks that Israel controls all aspects of the world historical scene. (I'll give him enough rope on that one)
2. Duff thinks Israel wants Iran eliminated. (probably true!)
3. The WikiLeaks docs paint a picture of a world hostile to Iran. (true)
4. The US or Israel or another party will false-flag nuclear (gotta be nuclear) attack the US. (...)
5. IMPLIED: The WikiLeaks docs will be used to make Iran appear to be the likely guilty party in this attack.
6. The US will attack Iran in response and become mired in a long, long conflict. (...)
7. Because the US will attack Iran, and because Israel wants Iran off the world-stage, this means that the war (4, 6) is part of an Israeli plot. (...)
8. The Wikileaks docs will cause the US to become part of an Israeli plot. (...)
9. Therefore, the Wikileaks docs are part of the Israeli plot. QED, motherfucker!!!

There's a huge problem here.

Motherfucker knows the future in specific details, apparently. I guess Gordon Duff has access to the "other" cables that WikiLeaks buried that give him the details of a soon-to-happen false flag attack that features two nuclear devices made by Israel and South Africa, which will lead to a 20-year war between the US, Iran and Pakistan requiring the US military ramp up to 500,000 by a draft, pushing oil to $300 thereby bankrupting the US, allowing Israel to make China into a puppet state.

It'd be one thing if Duff bothered to document any of that. He doesn't, he just looks in the crystal ball... apparently he likes the way glass tastes.

Here's the problem: even assuming that he's just writing a fable here for sake of illustration, he's basing his analysis of the present on events that he knows will happen in the future. You actually have to step into a time machine to reach this conclusion. This is like post hoc ergo propter hoc meets Back to the Future.

There's another problem, but in small text b/c it's a smaller problem. It is true that if there was a plot to use the WikiLeaks docs to cause the US to attack Iran, then the WikiLeaks docs would portray Iran negatively.

If X then Y, right? But if X implies Y, Y does not necessarily imply X! If I step on glass my foot will hurt, but if my foot hurts, this doesn't mean I stepped on glass. If the WikiLeaks docs portray Iran negatively that does not mean they are part of a plot to cause the US to attack Iran. But this part is in small text because it's not as important.

Look, this is the closest you're going to get from an olive branch from me here. Many of you are basing your analysis of the present on a future that may and probably never will happen. That's a species of misanthropy, to be honest. And there's severe confirmation bias at work here, also known as intellectual laziness. Five days ago Assange was a Zionist/Fascist/Reptilian Stooge because he hadn't been arrested or assassinated yet. Last night he was a Zionist/Fascist/Reptilian Stooge because he was negotiating with UK police on surrendering to them instead of having been arrested or assassinated. Today he's a Zionist/Fascist/Reptilian Stooge because he's only been in lock-up since this AM. When his plane explodes or he dies of radiation poisoning he'll be a Zionist/Fascist/Reptilian Stooge because it didn't happen soon enough. If he dies in custody tomorrow he'll still be a Zionist/Fascist/Reptilian Stooge because that would be enough for most conspiracy "researchers" to call off their dogs and keep us from learning the Truth of his duplicity.

You don't have to be one of these addle-brained tin foil types who thinks like this. Don't. Please.

After all, like someone here said not so long ago, "the whole Internet is a 'wiki-leak' - why the focus on this one site?

That would have been me and precisely why I am questioning the narrative and thus taking shit for it. Take it or leave it, but those are my thoughts so far. I wrote that shit way back in July or whenever it was in fact, with the "shocking" helicopter video. It ain't shocking. Leaks do not shock. Inhumanity does.
There is no me. There is no you. There is all. There is no you. There is no me. And that is all. A profound acceptance of an enormous pageantry. A haunting certainty that the unifying principle of this universe is love. -- Propagandhi

Because the internet is not a wikileak. Most of the time it is merely an entertainment aid, pity fools like me who have hope for it to be something more.

And the focus is not on one site or one man, it is on thousands of leaked cables. I think ppl from 'celebrity news' focused propaganda environments find this hard to grasp.
