The Zoo Hypothesis posits that we have not detected extraterrestrial intelligences (ETIs) because they deliberately prevent us from detecting them. While a valid solution to Fermi's Paradox, it is not particularly amenable to rigorous scientific analysis, as it implicitly assumes a great deal about the sociological structure of a plurality of civilisations. Any attempt to assess its worth must begin with its most basic assumption - that ETIs share a uniformity of motive in shielding Earth from extraterrestrial contact. This motive is often presumed to be generated by the influence of the first civilisation to arrive in the Galaxy. I show that recent work on inter-arrival time analysis, while necessary, is insufficient to assess the validity of the Zoo Hypothesis (and its related variants). The finite speed of light prevents an early civilisation from exerting immediate cultural influence over a later civilisation if they are sufficiently distant. I show that if civilisation arrival times and spatial locations are completely uncorrelated, this strictly prevents the establishment of total hegemony throughout the Galaxy. I finish by presenting similar results derived from more realistic Monte Carlo Realisation simulations (where arrival time and spatial locations are partially correlated). These also show that total hegemony is typically broken, even when the total population of civilisations remains low. In the terminology of previous studies of solutions to Fermi's Paradox, this confirms the Zoo Hypothesis as a "soft" solution. However, an important question to be resolved by future work is the extent to which many separate hegemonies are established, and to what extent this affects the Zoo Hypothesis.

It is argued that the "generic" evolutionary pathway of advanced technological civilizations are more likely to be optimization-driven than expansion-driven, in contrast to the prevailing opinions and attitudes in both future studies on one side and astrobiology/SETI studies on the other. Two toy-models of postbiological evolution of advanced technological civilizations are considered and several arguments supporting the optimization-driven, spatially compact model are briefly discussed. In addition, it is pointed out that there is a subtle contradiction in most of the tech-optimist and transhumanist accounts of future human/alien civilizations' motivations in its postbiological stages. This may have important ramifications for both practical SETI projects and the future (of humanity) studies.

The Fermi Paradox is based on a willful and total exclusion of the facts. As long as you're down for ignoring centuries of history and thousands of reported sightings and encounters just in the past 50 years, then yes, there's a "lack of observational evidence" after you've discarded all the...you know, observational evidence.

We have exterminated pretty much everything awesome on Earth. Any advanced civilization would view the human species as a disease, at best.

Just got my copy of Dark White in the mail, will probably read it on the bus this weekend.

Any advanced civilization whose empathic standards would be so shocked by the general result of human behavior would also be just as able to identify a million different reasons why a huge percentage of humans are basically decent and worthy of not being viewed as a mere disease, including but not least of which is that there are millions upon millions of humans whose own empathic standards are equally shocked by the same thing.

This is an absolutely fascinating thread, I have nowt to contribute as usual but just wanted to thank Elfis and all the other posters for it. I don't follow the UFO scene all that closely, but was reading about the Napolitano case quite recently in an older book - having this new (to me) information condensed and linked and explained here by folk who know a lot more about it is invaluable.

Was a surprise to see Richard Tomlinson mentioned, but he seems to come into a lot of things one way or another.

At the end of Tim Binnall's live show yesterday evening interviewing Jeremy Vaeni, Vaeni says he is about to begin writing a book with Emma Woods.

Paratopia Launches Project Core

Paratopia is ambitiously undertaking Project Core, a broad study into all kinds of reported paranormal phenomena. The initiative includes Dr. Tyler Kokjohn, Dr. Kim Cooper and Paratopia personnel Jeff Ritzmann and Jeremy Vaeni. In Jeff's words:

Project Core has Launched. For the next 10 months we will collect your stories and answers to questions. No, this is not a gathering of accounts for a book, film or anything else – only research into paranormal experiences and those who’ve experienced them. It’s an anonymous submitting process, but one that requires raw truth – no matter how odd or unbelievable. This is not exclusively a UFO/alien data collection process – ghosts, PK, ESP, non-human contacts, etc are all sought and welcome.

This is where we start over – and try to get to the Core.

Access the site through this link: Project Core

Until such time as we get an easier URL for the site, you can spread this link far and wide – it’s greatly appreciated.

Please be sure to include your methodology in selection of subjects to be included. That is the biggest problem for me in Eddie Bullard’s ’87 work on abductees: how did he get those subjects? how did he get the information that tells him there is no investigator influence on the reports or type of experience the individual reports? Did he take the ones hand-picked by Hopkins, Jacobs, Mack? Those are the sorts of things I’d like to know about your very necessary study. Thanks for doing this! Carol Rainey

I’m sure Tyler won’t allow us to get away without doing so.
