Art Bell and his estimated 3 million loyal listeners would certainly disagree with you, Nordic.

Ahh, those were the days. Never missed a night when Terence was on the show.

And what a pretty necklace McKenna is wearing.

Well, I thought it was interesting. I just don't really think it's possible that no one in the company would have pointed out the obvious connection between Terence McKenna and 2012 at some point in the design process. I still think they most likely settled on that name for this particular year as a marketing ploy. Or maybe it's just that the timewave function is collapsing as it reaches infinity, in which case I suppose everything will start being named McKenna.

It could just be that one of the creative types at American Girl thought it would be a sly reference, and easy to get away with, as most people sadly still have no idea who the fuck Terence McKenna is.

At best, I'd say it's that.

If the dolls came with a hit of acid, maybe I'd agree with the OP.

Does anyone really think an 8 year old girl is gonna read a wikipedia entry about Terrence McKenna? Especially if her focus is 100% on the doll?

If naming the 2012 doll McKenna isn't a reference to Terence McKenna, that's a pretty big coincidence. Just thought that was interesting, and maybe some people here will find some deeper connections or something. American Girl also made the doll a gymnast to tie in with the summer olympics, and I know there has already been much discussion of the mascots here at RI.

There was actually an FBI agent turned rogue who was helping combat cointelpro back in 1968, his name was Terry Mckenner. All this meta-woo "Mckenna" stuff is well, you know.

WB, this has got to be one of the silliest OPs on this site, ever.

Surely the obvious choice would have been "Maya 2012"?

I hope next year's doll is named MacCruiskeen.

So do I, because then it would have to be a grotesquely fat Irish cop.

I named my own three lovely daughters McGillicuddy, Horowitz and Smithers. Sadly, we are estranged.

I'll agree with that for the most part based on what I've seen here at RI, but I still think it's weird enough to have shared here.

Good point. Maybe just a bit too obvious. Just a bit.

???
The fact that Terrence McKenna's wiki article shows up first when 'Mckenna' is googled may indicate that he is more well known than you think. That's the only point I was trying make. I believe that's how the google search engines work, McKenna may appear in the search engine's databases in relation to Terence McKenna more than any other single individual associated with the name Mckenna.

Google results are easily manipulated. I've done it right here, using my comment line. Also did it at dailykos back when i ppsted there a lot using the same technique.

Seriously, Nordic? Why on earth...?

Sorry, I have to laugh. My first association will always be with Ian McKenna, the hero of our primary-school football team. :yay :yay :yay He was a self-dribbling jeweled basketball all right. Even at the age of eleven he was built like the proverbial brick shithouse. He was nearly as wide as he was tall. From the neck up he looked like Edward G. Robinson, if Edward G. Robinson had been ginger. Beautiful he was not. Just hard to stop.

(When "McCann" comes into fashion as a girl's name in the US, I won't hesitate to tell you about John "Sody*" McCann, another unusual-looking child who was famous at our school for acts of bizarre random violence.)

*Short for for "sody-heid", i.e., "soda-head". He was a somewhat effervescent chap.

When I glanced at the thread title, I thought of Terrence McKenna and Cynthia McKinney. If the CIA is trying to make me not think of those people, they're doing a lousy job.
