This would appear to be a fairly middle of the road rebuttal I have seen to the situation on the web, that wasn't hyped up and had a lot of glamour attitude to draw web clicks, as opposed to the extremity of my previous post as the worst fate he could meet in the hands of a pitchfork mob.

Salon Publishes HORRIFYING Article on Pedophilia; We Respond

Image

In probably what is one of the most disturbing things you’ll ever read at Salon, and there are plenty, their latest is written by a self-proclaimed pedophile who wants your sympathy.
Yes you heard that correctly. A pedophile writing for Salon wants your understanding and support in his demented psychological illness.

The man tries to claim pedophilia is a sexual orientation. SERIOUSLY.
No, pedophilia is not a sexual orientation, it is a psychological illness of the degenerate kind. He thinks because he hasn’t acted on his urges to have sex with children that he’s somehow to be praised for this.

It doesn’t seem that he has actually tried to get the help he needs to address what seem to be multiple psychological issues. He believes this is just who he is and there is nothing that can be done about it other than hang out with other pedophiles who don’t actually act upon their ‘desires.’

Here are some snippets from the pedophiles article on Salon [emphasis added]:

I recall an event from when I was 11, sitting in the family jeep with my dad and his friend Andy when a news piece on the radio reported the sexual abuse of a girl, to which my dad said to his friend something like, “They should take people like that and place weights on top of their genitals until they smash.” Pretty horrific imagery for an 11-year-old to process, and I couldn’t help but sympathize with the abuser. After all, I could recall my own molestation perfectly, and I hardly felt it warranted that kind of response.

I wanted desperately to be friends with people who shared my sexual orientation, even if they held crazy beliefs, but I could never quite reconcile with their viewpoint.

For better or worse—mostly worse—we have this sexuality, and unlike with most sexualities, there is no ethical way we can fully actualize our sexual longings. Our desires and feelings, if we are to remain upright, are doomed from the outset. Indeed, whereas the majority of crimes can be bounced back from, society doesn’t extend a mulligan to molesters. I understand why, but that doesn’t make the burden any lighter to bear, particularly for those of us who have minimal or no attraction to adults.

So, please, be understanding and supportive. It’s really all we ask of you. Treat us like people with a massive handicap we must overcome, not as a monster.

The only reason this guy hasn’t already molested a child is because he knows he’ll end up in prison and probably dead. His self-preservation is clear. He doesn’t actually care about protecting children, he cares about protecting himself.
The fact that Salon is trying to normalize this behavior as just another ‘sexual orientation’ is disturbing.

At one point in the article the guy tries to blame his ‘Conservative Southern’ state of Tennessee for not allowing him to get full disability benefits. He isn’t a productive member of society because he has chosen to put his pedophilia as a sexual orientation first, above his ability to provide for himself.

The psychotic lunatics on the left have been sympathizing with pedophiles for years. Not only do they push sympathy for these people but clearly from this article they ignore the true victims – THE CHILDREN.

This man was a victim of sexual abuse by an adult yet he sympathizes with his abuser. He heard a story and his father’s reaction and sympathized with the abuser, NOT THE VICTIM.

There are far more deep-seated psychological issues with this man than just pedophilia. He is absolutely a disturbed individual on many levels. That Salon tries to ‘normalize’ this shows just how disturbed they are as well.

"Be nice to me (and repeal your mandatory reporting laws) or I'm going to rape your children" is really not a stellar rallying cry for a social justice movement.

Of course this is the manipulation of liberal guilt, among other things.

Some quotes from the comments section of the OP:

One thing I know about pedophiles is that they are master manipulators and this "selfie" is just another attempt at manipulation.

That first pro-contact forum that he refuses to name, but assures us had no illegal activity going on there? Yeah, right. You can't have it both ways, Mr. Nickerson. We will start believing in your fine intentions when you start helping us to put away the men who destroy young lives. Because you are certainly in a position to do so.

we need to know how much narcissism and a lack of empathy generally coincides with the development of pedophilia. I agree with the article's main sentiment that there are many pedophiles who don't intend to act on their desires, and who live among us. But where there's smoke, there's fire, with neurological conditions, and you can tell from this article that the author has more than mere depression issues, he also has trouble relating directly to other human beings. There are telltale signs. I think we will look back on conditions like pedophilia and find it more important to assess the person's function for empathy than their eroticism of children. The problem with Bill Cosby's obsession with raping sleeping people is that it is not a random desire -- it is an eroticism of vulnerability and violation. The desire is a DIRECT, not indirect, interaction with his lack of empathy.

I have no doubt this distinction will be born out by further study.

The OP is standing in the odd intersection where the shallowness of third wave feminism, the problematic edges of identity politics, the facility of social media for the use of shaming as a tool of social control (yes, I can hear my own critics baying at this point), and cooptation of the language of social justice movements converge to create a wickedly effective stealth backlash strategy.

The call to compassion, together with the stick of shaming held high, render the liberal blind to telltale signs of narcissism, and various subtle and not so subtle boundary violations.

Bear with me now, I'm going to talk about an oppressed group that is deserving of great advocacy, so the parallels are limited, but they're noteworthy. The trans movement is largely made up of and arguably driven by MtF autogynophiles. Autogynophiles are heterosexual men who present with typically masculine mannerisms and interests pre-transition, who are sexually aroused to the thought or image of having a woman's body or otherwise resembling a woman. In other words, their transsexualism is rooted in a paraphilia (unsurprisingly co-morbid with narcissism). It is evident that these men carry with them their socialized entitlement into post transition, some of the most vociferous spouting MRA laden rhetoric while they walk around in heels. There are too many examples to cite, but to get an idea of the rampant misogyny in the trans movement, look up "cotton ceiling". In liberal and left leaning circles, and especially among third wavers, they've been very successful in making certain their needs are met. There are feminist venues where women are not allowed to talk about menstruation or pregnancy because it's too triggering to trans women (they can't experience those things). Female police officers are charged with discrimination if they don't want to pat down pre-op trans women, and lesbians are called bigots if they don't want to sleep with them. There are institutional and legal changes occurring every day with little or no discussion allowed of the consequences because once the territory of oppressed class is defined, in this climate, any attempt at reasonable (and compassionate!) analysis and boundary setting is impossible.

So I contend that if one group of mostly white heterosexual male people can make the world bend to the needs of their paraphilia, I have no doubt that another one can—pedophiles. It might take a while, but self identified "virtuous" pedophiles may well succeed in silencing survivors and redefining child rape as we know it. I can imagine a future trigger warning on a rare story about sexual abuse, "May be difficult material for virtuous pedophiles." Really puts a whole new spin on the concept of privilege.

Wow, Project Willow.

That's got to be one of the most intriguing, insightful and wise posts I've ever seen on these topics. You've crystalized a few things I've been worrying over for months now, about the trans in my own life.

Much food for thought, there.

Yes, thank you Project Willow, you're a treasure.

Now this is something I can have a handle on:

you can tell from this article that the author has more than mere depression issues, he also has trouble relating directly to other human beings. There are telltale signs. Trying to understand is sometimes messy and human sexuality... well it can drive a man to drink. And of course I'm all for the extreme vigilance WombRex mentioned.

Political Correctness is a cool concept but to me it simply means "try to be nice." PC is becoming a corrosive barrier in the communicative process due to the "oppressed class" phenomenon.

The problem, in my opinion, is created by the fact that people with no stake in the common game of survival, the Elite Master Class, have found a way through PC to create a hall of mirrors classification of "oppressed classes", in which to bury themselves for protection.

Ironically, at least in my own observation of my own neighborhood, most of the members of these "oppressed classes" themselves are not much concerned with the rights the Elite Master Class demands that they should fight for because most of actual members of the classes are at home minding their own business or waving at each other on the street corner.

Ironically the members of these different classes, unless they watch tv or listen to politically correct instructions from the Elite Master Class seem to get along fine with one another most of the time.

Even more ironic, when the very few of the classes engage in not getting along, it seems to be because they listened to the Elite Master Class, understood that THEIR NAMES AND LABELS THE MASTER CLASS GAVE THEM were not being properly respected, and so they engage in conflict exactly as the Elite Master Class has told them that they should.

Perhaps the most ironic, is the fact most of these "classes", which of course includes us all by now because we have all been given a label, don't really give a damn and go about our daily business without thinking about it but we think we are all fighting because the Elite Master Class system keeps telling us that we are.

How many of us had to get up and fight all those other assholes from all the other classes this morning just to get the day started? Didn't think so....

Until of course, we should try to communicate with one another in the presence of the Internet Judge And Jury (US), fail to address each other properly by our Elite Master Class given name labels, realize that our labels were not properly addressed, and fight each other like stupid animals because of it.

The system is working exactly as it was designed.

In the meantime the predators are slithering between the cracks in the labels where nobody can see them.

Political Correctness has been great hasn't it?

Before we all had PC names we waved at each other, said hello, and went about our business. Now that we know we all hate each other, which we never knew, we hate each other.

The system is working exactly as it was designed and has made us all more paralyzed and dysfunctional in my opinion. PC is supposed to make us nicer to each other and seems to achieve the opposite.

There was a time when the labels we identified each other with were the ones we commonly recognized each other as, with pure recognition skills, simply to address one another. I think this system worked a lot better. Until of course we were told that it didn't....

Are autogynophiles really that large of a percentage of the trans community? That hasn't been my observation from afar but I could be wrong.

I'm definitely one of those progressives who think of the trans community as always losing out (it might affect my perception as I live in a neighborhood with a lot of lesbians and trans men) but I have heard some of the anecdotes that you allude to here. Though I had never read that cotton ceiling exchange before, thanks for that.

I would have to disagree. Culture is certainly progressing at a rapid pace in the information age, and in some ways, society is drifting off in a much different direction than the state and corporate power. There are certainly no "good old days" when comes to interpersonal relations; that comes the next minute, and then the next minute after that. Globally we are all drifting together, moving into larger cities, and at least in the west, violent crime is precipitously dropping. We are more accepting of others and each new generation believes less and less in fairy tales like borders.

A cowboy who is fundamentally an anti-pc human being is a dinosaur. What are their core beliefs, anyway?

Could be all sorts of things, you would need to engage in dialogue to find out. My impression is that consensus is in fact splintering in the west especially in places like europe, where the spirit of 68 seems to increasingly be identified with dinosaurs. Even among so called progressives there is serious divergence bubbling under the surface.

As far as i can tell "pc" has its origin in corporate and state power. I'm definitely not averse to trying to reach mutual understanding with someone such as yourself who clearly subscribes to a different view.

To clarify i definitely do not want a return to some sort of good old days. To say conforming to some tenuous respectable consensus is the only other choice is not accurate. Borders aren't a fairy tale, they are very real and walls and fences are for better or worse multiplying not disappearing.

I am not sure what cowboys is supposed to mean; needless to say, not all dissenters are rural ranchers. As far as violence goes, all signs point to the sort of conflict going on in the middle east and north afriica eventually spreading to the so called west - just look at Ukraine.

Yeah, sorry, I just meant to say that I can't even envision someone who is dyed-in-the-wool anti-PC right off the top of my head, or what that person would be like. Walls and fences are multiplying, I agree - that's one area in which state and corporate power diverges sharply from the wants of a growing number of the common people.

I can't be sure exactly what I'm arguing for, especially in the context of this thread, where I am disgusted by the pedophile in the original post, but want to stand up for oppressed people who aren't hurting others (an actual trans woman bigoted towards queer women would not be in this category).

I would definitely imagine that the powers that be prefer a divided people as opposed to those that show solidarity across color, gender, age, class, and sexuality lines. I'm not sure I ever heard that political correctness is a statist tool.
