Like I know ALL of what there is to know  about football. But, when the cowplop hits the propellers, I suppose coaches usually sprint to the next position on chess boards of college and professional sports. Anyway, here's one guy.

Ohio State set to unveil Meyer as new coach
— Tribune News Services, 12:18 p.m. Nov 28, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Urban Meyer is returning to coaching -- and to his roots.

The former Florida coach and Ohio native will take over at Ohio State, a program with a glittering past that has suffered through a difficult year of NCAA violations, suspensions and a 6-6 record.

The university scheduled a 5:15 p.m. news conference to introduce its new coach. But it did not mention Meyer, even though there are numerous reports that Meyer has already agreed on a multiyear contract that could pay him almost $6 million a year.

    [MORE.]
_________________

I was pretty surprised that Urban Frank Meyer is a devout Roman Catholic, according to that wiki page. His coaching career began in 1985 at St. Xavier HS that lists Authority (Chicago–Detroit Province) as Society of Jesus, and that Catholic society returns us to RI's post wrt Josh McDaniels, who drafted Tebow.

Whom did Meyer replace at Ohio State? James Patrick Tressel, who, per his wiki, is actively involved with his wife in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action both of which are evangelical Christian sports ministries in the tradition of Muscular Christianity. Athletes in Action is a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ.

So, is there a cast of thousands of openly religious coaches and players? I didn't know, really. The Catholic Athletes for Christ are active as are Campus Crusade for Christ participants at Penn State.

Occurrence of religious symbolism in U.S. sports noted for later research.

Not so ‘independent’
10:21am Nov 29, 2011, CentreDaily.com, Lee Samuel Finn wrote:The Penn State board of trustees’ 10-member “independent special committee” has been appointed. With the exception of one member — Louis Freeh — all have exceptionally close affiliations with Penn State.

One is chairman of the Faculty Senate and others are members of the board, whose leadership and oversight of the university are generally agreed to require investigation.

It is hard to understand how the committee’s composition merits the appellation “independent.”

The committee has hired Freeh Group International Solutions to carry out the investigation. According to the second sentence on the “About FGIS” section of its website, FGIS has “built a reputation for working closely with each client to efficiently assess their circumstances, provide independent counsel, and jointly develop or enhance effective risk mitigation strategies.”

I have no doubt that FGIS will do the job it has been hired to do. The role of such a large special committee of insiders in an “independent” investigation does puzzle me and leads me to wonder just whose risk FGIS was hired to mitigate.

1st Penn State Abuse Suit Comes From New Accuser

By MARYCLAIRE DALE Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA November 30, 2011 (AP)

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused a young boy more than 100 times after meeting him through the charity he founded, then threatened the boy's family to keep him quiet about the encounters, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The lawsuit identifies the plaintiff, an adult, only as John Doe. It claims Sandusky abused the boy at the coach's State College home, at Penn State facilities and on at least one bowl game trip.

The plaintiff is not among eight victims named in a grand jury report released earlier this month that detailed a series of alleged assaults involving Sandusky and boys as young as 10. Sandusky has acknowledged showering and embracing young boys but denies molesting them.

According to the lawsuit, Sandusky gave the boy gifts, travel and privileges after meeting him through his charity, The Second Mile, in 1992. The abuse began shortly after and lasted until 1996, the suit said.

Sandusky is charged with abusing eight boys, some on campus, over 15 years, allegations that were not immediately brought to the attention of authorities even though high-level people at Penn State apparently knew about at least one of them.

The scandal has resulted in the departures of school President Graham Spanier and longtime coach Joe Paterno. Athletic Director Tim Curley has been placed on administrative leave, and Vice President Gary Schultz, who was in charge of the university's police department, has stepped down.

Schultz and Curley are charged with lying to the grand jury and failure to report to police, and Sandusky is charged with child sex abuse. All maintain their innocence.

Attorney Jeffrey Anderson planned a news conference for Wednesday morning to discuss the lawsuit, which was filed in Philadelphia.

Messages were left for Sandusky's lawyer and for officials at Penn State and the Second Mile.

...

The man released this statement:

"I am the man in this lawsuit and I’m writing this statement and taking this action because I don’t want other kids to be hurt and abused by Jerry Sandusky or anybody like Penn State to allow people like him to do it—rape kids! I never told anybody what he did to me over 100 times at all kinds of places until the newspapers reported that he had abused other kids and the people at Penn State and Second Mile didn’t do the things they should have to protect me and the other kids. I am hurting and have been for a long time because of what happened but feel now even more tormented that I have learned of so many other kids were abused after me. Now that I have told and done something about it I am feeling better and going to get help and work with the police. I want other people who have been hurt to know they can come forward and get help and help protect others in the future."

In the suit, the man claims that Sandusky threatened to harm him and his family if he told authorities about the assaults.

The Second Mile released this statement:

"We will review the lawsuit and respond appropriately when we have done so. The Second Mile will adhere to its legal responsibilities throughout this process. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

The university told the Associated Press it had not yet seen the lawsuit.

Citadel lawyer hoped to avoid criminal probe of abuse

By Harriet McLeod

CHARLESTON, South Carolina | Thu Dec 1, 2011 2:37pm EST

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters)- Newly released documents tied to a 2007 internal probe of child sexual abuse allegations against a camp counselor at The Citadel show a school lawyer hoped a criminal investigation of the matter could be avoided.

Local and state police are investigating The Citadel -- South Carolina's military college -- for not reporting to authorities a 2007 allegation by a former summer camper that he was sexually abused by the counselor five years earlier, when he was 14.

The case emerged in public in the wake of the child abuse scandal at Penn State University involving a football coach. Another case of alleged sexual abuse by a coach has prompted an investigation at Syracuse University.

The man at the center of the allegations, former camp counselor Louis "Skip" ReVille, was arrested last month on separate charges of abusing five boys in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Police said he had admitted to those crimes, and more charges have since been filed.

A Citadel graduate, ReVille had worked as a counselor at the school's camp for three summers between 2001 and 2003. The Citadel closed its camp in 2006. ReVille had worked elsewhere as a school principal and sports coach.

The Citadel did not report the allegations to police, instead asking in-house counsel Mark Brandenburg to investigate, and took no further action.

"I found (the former camper) to be believable," Brandenburg wrote in an e-mail in August 2007, according to the documents released by The Citadel on Wednesday.

"His story remained the same as the one he related to me over to the phone some time ago," Brandenburg wrote.

"No 'formal' civil or criminal investigation has been initiated," he wrote in another email that month.

"Although the complainant could certainly file a report with the police, which would start a criminal investigation, or file a lawsuit in civil court, which would start a civil investigation, the complainant has done neither."

"Moreover, I am hopeful that, by conducting an investigation on behalf of the school, no 'formal' investigation -- civil or criminal -- will occur," Brandenburg wrote.

According to an interview transcript, which The Citadel released last month, the young man told Brandenburg he and other campers used to hang out in ReVille's room "and then one night, he pulled out a pornographic video and put it in and started masturbating".

"He encouraged everyone in the room to join in. And they did. And I guess he made an agreement with these kids that he would keep buying them Chinese food and pizza and all these good things and give them privileges if they continued to come to his room," the interview document said.

The emails show Brandenburg writing that the former camper's parents felt "the school can be part of the solution, even as it was part of the problem," and that the ex-camper expressed interest in attending The Citadel.

The documents state The Citadel wanted to reach a financial settlement with the family, and Brandenburg was authorized to offer them $20,000.

Julie Moore, a Charleston lawyer for the former camper, said last month that: "When (the family) went to The Citadel in 2007, they wanted to make sure that there were no other victims of Skip ReVille. They didn't want any other family to go through what they went through."

"Fortunately, since we now have an interview with (the former camper), we have an unequivocal trigger for the statute of limitations," Brandenburg wrote in a November 2007 email, going on to detail when the period for bringing formal charges might expire under the statute.

The documents show Brandenburg referring to the former camper's allegations as "a new round of sexual abuse at the summer camp" and linked the case with a previous child sexual assault case at The Citadel.

In 2006, the school paid a $3.8 million judgment in a civil suit filed by five former campers who said they were sexually assault by Marine officer and camp counselor Michael Arpaio. Arpaio was court-martialed for the crimes by the U.S. Marine Corps and served time in Charleston's Navy Brig.

"Skip (ReVille), as I have reported, denies all this," Brandenburg wrote in an e-mail. "However, Arpaio's initial denials were equally forceful, and, unfortunately, ultimately proved totally false."

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has said he will review the sexual abuse scandal when police investigations finish.

Citadel President John W. Rosa apologized at a news conference last month.

"This should have been reported (to police)," he said. "We're profoundly sorry, sorry that we didn't pursue it more. We acted on what we thought was our best information ... We're all held accountable."
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.

Civil lawsuit filed against The Citadel
— For Release | October 1, 2003

Statement from Citadel President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds

“The Citadel has been named a defendant in a lawsuit filed Monday that alleges improper conduct took place between a counselor and a camper at The Citadel Summer Camp between 1997 and 2001. Michael Arpaio, the counselor, has also been named as a defendant.

“The allegations of inappropriate contact of a sexual nature are shocking and deeply disturbing to the college and everyone associated with the summer camp.

“The Citadel first learned of allegations involving this counselor in the closing days of the camp session in the summer of 2001. At that time, the camp acted immediately to investigate the report and to remove the counselor.

“The matter was later investigated by Charleston Police and the United States Marine Corps. That investigation resulted in the court-martial of Michael Arpaio. He was sentenced on charges of conduct unbecoming a Marine officer and is currently serving prison time on those charges.

“Prior to the session this past summer, we notified parents of campers of the 2001 incident and we encouraged them to talk to their children about safety and reporting inappropriate conduct.

“In view of our longstanding concern for the safety and welfare of those on our campus, The Citadel constantly reviews all of its programs involving children.

“While the facts of the case still have to be determined, the college wants all of its constituents to know that while it will defend the lawsuit, The Citadel condemns in the strongest possible terms the conduct alleged in this lawsuit.”

I've snipped some redundant info from this report.

First lawsuit filed vs. Jerry Sandusky
Dec 1, 2011, 2:17 AM ET, ESPN.com news services wrote:PHILADELPHIA -- Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused a boy more than 100 times, and threatened to harm his family to keep him quiet, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by a new accuser who is not part of the criminal case.

The 29-year-old, identified only as John Doe, had never told anyone about the alleged abuse until Sandusky was charged this month with abusing other boys. He filed a complaint with law enforcement on Tuesday, and a day later became the first plaintiff to file suit in the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal.

< snip >

"I am hurting and have been for a long time because of what happened, but feel now even more tormented that I have learned of so many other kids were abused after me," the plaintiff said in a statement his lawyer read aloud at a news conference.

< snip >

The man's lawyer, Jeff Anderson, said he believes Sandusky was a predator who could not control his sexual impulses toward children. He harshly criticized officials at Penn State and The Second Mile who failed to report their suspicions and put a stop to any abuse.

"We need to address the institutional recklessness and failures," said Anderson, who specializes in clergy sex-abuse lawsuits. "Was it because of power, money, fear, loyalty, lack of education?"

The university said it had not yet seen the complaint.

The charity said it would respond after reviewing the lawsuit, but added: "The Second Mile will adhere to its legal responsibilities throughout this process. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

The lawsuit was filed hours before students and high-ranking administrators participated in a town hall forum organized by students at Penn State's main campus in State College.

Penn State president Rod Erickson promised the university would raise the visibility of ethics "to a new level" following the scandal, which has rocked the campus.

"So hopefully everyone in the university understands ... we learn to do the right thing the first time, every time," Erickson said in opening remarks before an audience of about 450 students and employees at an auditorium in the student union.

Students said the forum, which was broadcast on the school's public television station, will help in the healing process.

< snip >

Anderson suggested that it ended four years later because Sandusky was not sexually interested in older teens.

< snip >

The lawsuit seeks a minimum $400,000 in damages for sexual abuse, negligence, emotional distress and other claims. The accuser long thought he was the only victim and was mired in guilt and self-loathing, the lawyer said.

"Now that I have done something about it, I am feeling better and going to get help and work with the police," the accuser wrote in his statement.

Anderson declined to specify what sexual acts allegedly took place, but he called them "severe." Nor would he say which police agency his client contacted Tuesday.

Police in Philadelphia and State College said they were not aware of such a complaint. Both the attorney general's office, which led the grand jury investigation, and state police said they could not disclose if a report were filed.

The university had no information that campus police received the man's complaint, a spokeswoman said. The university has turned two other recent complaints of past abuse, reported after Sandusky's arrest, to the attorney general's office.

By Anderson's count, the grand jury report lists 17 adults made aware of complaints or suspicions about the coach over the years, including those who knew of a 1998 complaint that Sandusky had showered with a Second Mile boy. Police pursued that mother's complaint, and compiled more than 100 pages of investigatory notes, but no charges were filed.

Had John Doe known about that, he might have come forward to a parent or counselor years ago, Anderson said.

"Why were so many people, for so long, making choices that protected the institutions and not the children?" Anderson asked. "It's not just about Penn State, it's about all of us."

The man has not talked with prosecutors since he came forward and is not expected to testify at Sandusky's preliminary hearing on Dec. 13, Amendola said, according to The Patriot-News.

A 1994 piece in The New Yorker called "The Naked Citadel" pointed to this sort of thing.

The New Yorker archive requires a subscription or one-time payment (and I recently cancelled my decades-long subscription in disgust) but someone has helpfully posted it in PDF here:

http://www.hendrix.edu/uploadedFiles/Ad ... itadel.pdf

Of note are the Citadel's traditional "shirt tuck" (requiring another male cadet standing behind the tuck-ee to shove his hands into their pants), and the writer's visits to "a nearby gay bar where it is reported that some cadets have transvestite lovers."

Luther, thanks for those thoughts.

I'm putting below an update to the purported-25K-membership-megachurch New Birth Missionary Baptist Church's Bishop Eddie Long, a self-appointed bishop. Not finding an indication that the church is either Independent or fundamentalist (or, for instance, affiliated with Southern Baptists), it could be presumed Mr. Long is only responsible to himself and "unto the Lord" as a charismatic through the entity New Birth Church Association.

Eddie Long wiki notes that Long has a bachelor's degree in business admin; it seems then his church's operations had been arranged as a business, which could lead one to think his sermons teach a version of the prosperity gospel—to some 25,000 people. Please note too the New Birth Christian Academy for K-12.

The Wife of Black Minister Eddie Long Files for Divorce, Then Withdraws
Dec 2, 2011 5:49pm, ABC News wrote:Late Thursday night, Vanessa Long confirmed long-standing rumors that she and her husband, megachurch Pastor Eddie Long, were on the brink of divorce. She filed divorce papers Thursday, and in an emailed statement wrote that “After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long.” In the initial divorce filing, she said the marriage was “irretrievably broken” and had “no hope of reconciliation.”

Eddie Long was accused by four young men of coercing them into sexual relations when the they were teenagers. He settled with the accusers for an undisclosed amount last May. Some suggest he spent nearly $2.5 million settling the case. At his first public appearance after news of the allegations broke, Vanessa Long stood by his side. Her divorce filing was the first real sign that there was trouble in the Long marriage.

But this afternoon, Vanessa Long had an apparent, sudden and dramatic change of heart.

“Upon prayerful reflection, I have reconsidered and plan to withdraw my petition for divorce from my husband, Bishop Eddie L. Long,” she wrote. “I love my husband. I believe in him and admire his strength and courage. My filing followed years of attacks in the media that frustrated and overwhelmed me. I love my family and church family, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Therefore, my husband and I have mutually agreed to find healing from these attacks. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”

This is Eddie Long’s second marriage. He married Dabara Houston in 1981 and they were divorced four years later. According to court documents, there were allegations that he beat his then wife with his fists when she was more than seven months pregnant.

New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, which has more than 25,000 members, has been rocked by the scandal involving their “bishop.” Elder Bernice King, daughter of slain civil right leader Martin Luther King, left the church this summer but denied she left because of the allegations surrounding Long having sex with young men in his youth ministry.

Long has a long history of preaching again [sic] gays, gay sex and gay marriage. He once led a march against gays through the streets of Atlanta, and described homosexuality as a “spiritual abortion.”

"Mrs. Long continues to hope that this matter may be resolved expeditiously, harmoniously and fairly; however, she has determined that dismissal of her divorce petition is not appropriate at this time," Kilpatrick Townsend partner Michael W. Tyler said in a prepared statement.

"To avoid any undue confusion, Mrs. Long's future statements, if any, will be issued through her attorneys," he said. A spokesman for Kilpatrick Townsend refused further comment.

Audio
Jerry Sandusky in His Own Words
Jerry Sandusky, accompanied by his lawyer, Joseph Amendola, sat down with The Times’s Jo Becker for a wide-ranging interview that stretched over two days. Sandusky, in a nearly four-hour interview, insisted he had never sexually abused any child, but he confirmed details of some of the events that prosecutors have cited in charging him with 40 counts of molesting young boys, all of whom came to know Sandusky through the charity he founded, known as the Second Mile.

Statement of Innocence

Sandusky denied charges of sexual abuse detailed in a grand jury report made public last month.

Growing Up

Sandusky grew up in a recreation center run by his father in a small Pennsylvania town.

The Sandusky Family

Sandusky and his wife were unable to have children biologically, so they adopted and fostered several children, including one that came through the Second Mile.

Founding Second Mile

Sandusky said that his experience adopting and taking in foster children inspired him to start the Second Mile.

The Times reported in November that the Second Mile is preparing to fold as it tries to reconstruct what it knew, and did, about any suspicions or allegations regarding Sandusky over the years.

Sandusky's Extended Family

Second Mile children were always part of the Sandusky home, but he took a special interest in some more than others.

Physical Activity With Children

Sandusky spoke of how he interacted physically with children through his work with the Second Mile.

1998 Investigation

In 1998, the Penn State University police and the Pennsylvania child protection agency began an investigation after the mother of an 11-year-old boy told the university that her son had showered with Sandusky. A grand jury report details a conversation between the mother and Sandusky that was taped by the police. In it, he says: “I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead.” Sandusky remembers the conversation differently.

Thoughts on Joe Paterno

Both the college president and Coach Joe Paterno have said they knew nothing about that 1998 investigation. Both were forced to step down after the grand jury report became public.

2002 Meeting With Penn State Athletic Director

Sandusky spoke about a crucial meeting he had with Penn State's athletic director, Tim Curley, over a 2002 incident in the football locker room's shower. An assistant football coach, Mike McQueary, testified to the grand jury that he witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a boy of about 10 years old and that he related to Paterno some version of the incident the following day. Paterno testified that he informed Curley and another administrator that McQueary told him he had seen Sandusky "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy." Curley has testified that it was his understanding that McQueary saw "inappropriate conduct" that he termed "horsing around." The incident was never reported to the police.

Sandusky said the Second Mile did not limit his access to children after Curley informed the program’s executive director, Jack Raykovitz, about the 2002 incident.

The photo at the top right shows McQueary and Paterno in October.

The Victims

Sandusky on why he thinks those who have made allegations against him are making claims of sexual abuse.

Victim 1

When the young man known as Victim 1 alleged that Jerry Sandusky sexually abused him, it resulted in a grand jury investigation. In a Nov. 23 New York Times article about Victim 1, Sandusky's lawyer, Joseph Amendola, said Victim 1 lashed out with false accusations after Sandusky, in his role as mentor, pushed the boy too hard. This is what Sandusky has to say about Amendola's statement, and about Victim 1.

Bob Costas Interview

Sandusky reacted to his interview on Nov. 14 with Bob Costas.

Life Today

Since the grand jury report became public last month, most of Sandusky’s former friends and colleagues have distanced themselves from him. Now, along with his wife and children, Sandusky’s St. Bernard, Bo, is one of his few companions.

“I miss coaching,” Sandusky said. “I miss Second Mile. I miss Second Mile kids. I miss interrelationships with all kinds of people. I miss my own grandkids. I miss, I mean you know I’m going to miss my dog. So, I mean, yeah, I miss, yeah. Good grief."

“Due to extraordinary circumstance, the board of trustees needed to act swiftly and decisively on the personnel decisions announced Nov. 9, 2011, and reported at the public meeting on Nov. 11,” Garban said. “We believe immediate action was necessary and we stand by those decisions.”

The meeting was held in the Nittany Lion Inn, but none of the trustees appeared in person. Instead, they took part via telephone conference. There was little discussion. The committee members voted unanimously by voice, and the meeting was over in about five minutes.

“What they did today was cross their T’s and dot their I’s,” said Vice President for University Relations Bill Mahon.

He said the minutes of Friday’s meeting will go to the full board for reaffirmation at its January meeting. He said he couldn’t speculate on the possibility that trustees violated the Sunshine Law by making those decisions in meetings conducted behind closed doors the week of Nov. 6.

Melissa Melewsky, an attorney with the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, said state courts have established through case law that a public agency that violates the Sunshine Law may “cure” the violation by repeating the action in a public setting, as the university is doing.

“It would be very, very unlikely that a challenge would win against the board,” she said.

The trustees held closed-door meetings, which were not publicly announced, in the days after news broke that former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky had been charged with sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period, and that two university administrators were charged with lying about, and failing to report, what they knew about at least one such instance of abuse.

The trustees held a news conference shortly after 10 p.m. Nov. 9 to announce that Spanier would no longer be university president, and Paterno, the iconic football coach, had been fired. Rod Erickson, who had been executive vice president, was named the new president and Tom Bradley was named interim head football coach.

News of Paterno’s firing led thousands of students to flood the streets of downtown State College in apparent protest.

The nine-member committee also voted Friday to reaffirm the decision to appoint Erickson as president effective Nov. 9. While he was initially named acting president, the word “acting” has since been dropped from his title. University officials have said he is the president and there are no plans to conduct a search for the job.

Mahon said Erickson’s appointment isn’t for any specific length of time. Erickson, an ex-officio member of the committee, did not participate in the conference call.

Mahon said after the meeting that the board has had executive committee meetings before, including one two years ago about the budget and state support.

Mary Kay Hort, a daughter of Joe and Sue Paterno, was one of the people who attended the meeting and a news conference that followed.

She asked Mahon why any board members who live in the State College area didn’t attend in person. Mahon said he didn’t know.

Garban lives in Harris Township.

Hort declined to comment after the news conference.

> And in doing so, the board sealed their own fate for Feb 27th, 2012 when they'll all be voted out.

> Spanier and Paterno ran large-scale operations, for which they were amply compensated, presumably with contracts that spell out every termination scenario. A very common and therefore anticipated scenario is that they'd have to leave, voluntarily or not, because something awful happened under their watch, regardless of their legal or practical responsibility. That's the most common termination scenario for senior executives, after all, rather than something terrible they do directly. It's a no-brainer that they had to go, and it's a no-brainer that they're being handled in conformity with a part of their contracts that they hoped never to use, but that's there precisely for these circumstances.

> The people who were fired/removed had to be considering the gravity of the situation whether a major university or a chicken farm. There is likely more heads to lop off, ie anyone who knew and did nothing. Justice must prevail here.

Sandusky accuser says police knew dinner
Updated 2h 54m ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A Penn State accuser who dined with Jerry Sandusky this summer did so only after getting permission from police, the man's lawyer said Friday as he blasted suggestions that alleged victims remained friendly with the former Penn State coach.

One Jerry Sandusky's (pictured) accusers had dinner with the former Penn State defensive coordinator last Summer after receiving permission from police.

"Police gave their seal of approval for him to attend. They even wanted him to wear an electronic listening device," attorney Howard Janet said Friday. He also called into question Sandusky's motives for inviting the man to dinner while the ex-coach knew he was under investigation.

Sandusky has been charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years. He is accused of mining the ranks of his Second Mile charity to find underprivileged boys to abuse.

Sandusky says he is innocent and his lawyer, Joseph Amendola, has questioned several accusers' claims and the depiction of his client made in a grand jury report that identified the alleged victims by number. Earlier this week, Amendola told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that several accusers visited the Sandusky home and stayed on good terms with the ex-coach for years.

He told The Associated Press on Friday that another dinner guest that night was the man identified in the grand jury report as Victim No. 2, who Sandusky is accused of sodomizing in a Penn State shower.

Janet said another man identified as a victim in the grand jury report attended, but he did not specify who that was. He called Amendola's claim that accusers remained friendly with Sandusky "grotesque."

Janet represents the man known in the grand jury report as Victim No. 6, who was allegedly bear-hugged by Sandusky as they showered together at Penn State in 1998, when the boy was 11. The boy's mother filed a complaint; a police investigation ended with no charges filed.

The alleged victim, now 24, contacted police this summer when Sandusky invited him over for dinner, Janet said.

The dinner started at Sandusky's house and then moved to a restaurant, and included Sandusky's wife.

Janet said Sandusky pitched the dinner as a chance for former Second Mile participants to get together. "Why was he arranging to meet with victims while under investigation? Was he trying to tamper with or improperly influence potential witnesses?" Janet said.

He would not say if the investigation came up in conversation that night, or detail what his client later reported back to police. The client didn't wear a wire because he was nervous, Janet said.

Sandusky's lawyer said the meeting was part of an effort by Sandusky and his wife to maintain "friendships with lots of kids they helped as those kids grew into adulthood."

"The dinner at a local State College restaurant last summer, which was attended by Jerry and Dottie and alleged victims 2 and 6, was simply an effort on the Sanduskys' part to maintain those long established positive relationships with young men whom the Sanduskys believed were their friends," Amendola said.

Victim No. 2 was the boy seen being abused by Sandusky in a Penn State shower in 2002, according to the grand jury report. The witness, since identified as then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, told coach Joe Paterno about the incident, but police were not notified, the report said.

The grand jury report said Victim No. 2 had not been located. Amendola has said he believes the alleged victim is being represented by a State College attorney who did not respond to messages left by the AP late Friday.

Penn State fired Paterno and school President Graham Spanier after the report was made public. Two former Penn State officials are charged with failing to report complaints of abuse, and with lying to a grand jury. They have pleaded not guilty.

Sandusky is free on bail, and is next due in court on Dec. 13 for a preliminary hearing.

Earlier Friday, the executive committee of the university's board of trustees reaffirmed last month's shake-up of top university personnel.

In a four-minute meeting, the committee unanimously reaffirmed the firing of Paterno, the resignation of Spanier and the appointment of Rodney Erickson as his successor.

The board scheduled the meeting after criticism that the trustees violated the state open-meetings law by taking its initial votes behind closed doors last month.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.
