Do you see that poster? I was shocked.
As a performing artist, it represents freedom
of a certain kind and a freedom for all.
I'm seeing it through tears, today.

Occupy Wall Street | From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
— Many links in the original

ImageOccupy Wall Street is an ongoing demonstration[3] opposing corruptive corporate influence over U.S. politics, the monied corruption of democracy[4] and a lack of legal repercussions over the global financial crisis.[5] It was initially called for by Adbusters, an anti-capitalist group based in Canada, and was inspired by the Arab Spring movement, particularly the protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square which resulted in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.[6] The protest has since grown to draw the support from a diverse group of demonstrators from various social and political backgrounds.[7]

The aim of the demonstration is to begin a sustained occupation of Wall Street, the financial district of New York City, to protest perceived corporate greed and social inequality. Organizers intend for the occupation to last "as long as it takes to meet our demands." Demands are in the process of being negotiated and developed.[8][9]

On October 1, similar demonstrations were held in Washington, Los Angeles, and Portland, Maine.[10][11]

I mistook the fact Obama is a figurehead as a given on this board. Hosni Mubarak was a figurehead as well. His ouster only strengthened Egyptians resolve for real change, after much celebration... I understand everybody's point that removing Obama isn't key, but it isn't pointless. The bankers don't spend billions on Obama because he's pointless.

Occupy Wall Street seeks to unify people from starkly different realities. Powerful statements will be needed to accomplish this. One that is ready and waiting is calling for Obama's removal. If he goes, we still have little chance of change. If he stays, we have zero chance of change. Continued action should not diminish in either instance.

Proffering Senator Sanders took up three words of my plea. I even used the word "perhaps", which I thought offered some ambiguity while lightheartedly opening the discussion about who should succeed. I was really just calling him out for disclosing the speculative data which was beneficial to people in general, yet opposed by every other member. I do not believe for a moment those three words detracted from the overall message.

FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN
Artist(Band):Leonard Cohen

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I don't like your fashion business mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby ...

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I've practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I am guided

Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

appreciate it if you coud stop off in London on the way back... :thumbsup

We are the 99 per cent
Occupy Wall Street is a peaceful stand against the big American rip-off. Support it and regain your dignity

Mark Ruffalo
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 2 October 2011 13.07 EDT

I have spent the last two days at the Occupy Wall Street gathering. It was a beautiful display of peaceful action: so much kindness and gentleness in the camp, so much belief in our world and democracy. And so many different kinds of people all looking for a chance at the dream that America had promised them.

When people critique this movement and say spurious things about their clothes or their jobs or the general way they look, they are showing how shallow we have become as a nation. They forget that these people have taken time out of their lives to stand up for values that are purely American and in the interest of our democracy. They forget that these people are encamped in an urban park, where they are not allowed to have tents or other normal camping gear. They are living far outside their comfort zone to protect and celebrate liberty, equality and the rule of law.

It is a thing of beauty to see so many people so in love with the ideal of democracy, so alive with its promise, so committed to its continuity in the face of crony capitalism and corporate rule. That must and should be celebrated. That must and should be respected and admired.

Their message is very clear and simple: get money out of the political process; strive for equality in taxation and equal rights for all regardless of race, gender, social status, sexual preference or age. We must stop poisoning our food, air and water for corporate greed. The people on Wall Street and in the banking industrial complex that destroyed our economy must be investigated and brought to justice under the law for what they have done by stealing people's homes and savings.

Jobs can and must be created. Family farms must be saved. The oil and gas industry must be divested of its political power and cheap, reliable alternative energy must be made available.

This movement transcends political affiliations. America has been debased and degraded by greed. This has touched 99% of America's population. The other 1% is doing just fine – with more than a third of the wealth of this nation. We all know people who have been hurt by the big rip-off. We all know people who have lost their jobs or their homes. We all know people who have had to go and fight wars that seem to have no objective and no end – leaving families for years on end without fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.

The 99% of us have paid a dear price so that 1% could become the wealthiest people in the world. We all pay insanely high energy prices while we see the energy companies making record profits, year after year. We live with great injustices in the land of justice. We live with great lawlessness in the land of the law.

It's time to check ourselves, to see if we still have that small part that believes in the values that America promises. Do we still have a shred of our decency intact in the face of debasement? If you do, then now is the time to give that forgotten part a voice. That is what this movement is ultimately about: giving voice to decency and fairness.

I invite anyone and all to participate in this people's movement to regain your dignity and what you have worked for in this capitalist society. Each of us is of great value to the whole. Do not forget your greatness. Even when the world around you is telling you you are nothing. You have a voice. You want a better life for your children and the people you love. You live in a democracy. You belong, and you deserve a world that is fair and equal. You have a right to take your place and be heard.

Show up at an Occupy Wall Street gathering in any major city in the US. Hit your social media outlets. Tweet it. Facebook it. Talk it up. It's easy to do nothing, but your heart breaks a little more every time you do.

Omg, since you're quoting it, can you finally explain to me what these lyrics mean? It's been killing me for oh, a while. That it may vaguely have something to do with the RAF (as heard in the German bits on the Warnes recording) isn't enough. Why then Manhattan first? The violin's a rifle, surely, but who's got the fashion business and did he do to the sister? What's the birthmark? Don't tell me poetry has no explanation, because here the references seem specific to concrete events.

FIRST ‘OFFICIAL’ STATEMENT FROM THE OCCUPY WALL STREET MOVEMENT

This was unanimously voted on by all members of Occupy Wall Street last night, around 8pm, Sept 29. It is our first official document for release. We have three more underway, that will likely be released in the upcoming days: 1) A declaration of demands. 2) Principles of Solidarity 3) Documentation on how to form your own Direct Democracy Occupation Group. This is a living document. you can receive an official press copy of the latest version by emailing c2anycga@gmail.com.

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.

They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.

They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.

They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.

They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*

To the people of the world,

We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

Y'know what else is bugging the shit out of me? It's the news that a gaggle of celebrities -- Kanye West, Michael Moore, and Susan Sarandon among others -- have glommed onto this movement, no doubt with the ulterior motive of channeling the movement's energy into supporting the Democrats. I hear that Moore is back aboard the Obummer bandwagon -- drone strikes, extrajudicial assassinations and all -- based solely on that smarmy, bitch-slapping speech he gave to the CBC this week. Fucking fat-assed poseur.

If the folks at OWS had any sense at all, they'd be chasing the goddamn' celebrities off with tire irons and baseball bats. They don't need pop stars and Hollywood big shots to validate their movement; the People themselves, by simply being there, validate their movement. They don't need any goddamn' "star power" to legitimize them.

Bah. Fucking celebrities.

Even a casual observer could see that a few celebs made an appearance to lend badly needed attention that the protest, which was at the time, lacking and in need of if it were to be effective and continue. Rosanne was among the first, but there were others too. Musicians who cam discretely to offer moral support. "Well knowns' leant their ability to attract cameras to the protest. Media was trying to ingore the protestors. This fucker above is too dumb and juvenile to see that. As far as MMoore, did the author not see 'Capitalism, A Love Story'? This is MMoore's issue. This is MMOORE's idea, actually. I have issues with Moore, but those are seperate. Moore has helped the protestors immensely. Go ahead and bash though. Dumb fuck. "If the folks at OWS had any sense at all..." If they had any sense at all? Any at all, eh? Fuck YOU.

Mm, I was gonna say... is that true about Moore supporting Obama now? I haven't seen that. I'm not seeing it on his site right now. If it's true- maybe a link?
I've had mixed feelings about Moore throughout the years, but recently I've been much more supportive of him than anti-. How many anti-capitalists with a decent sense of humor are out there reaching millions of people? Not many. Stewart and Colbert? Not anti-capitalists.

Roseanne Barr is friggin awesome. Did you see the clip of her hugging Luke Rudkowski from We Are Change?

And Cornel West I'd say is a real net positive to the world right now, too. His presence at OWS has been a plus.

It depends on the celeb. In this case I'd say these folks have helped the OWS protest immensely.

Protestors are turning to anonymous smartphone messaging platform Vibe to avoid law enforcement agencies snooping on their BlackBerry Messaging (BBM) and Twitter posts, helping to outwit police at the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York.

Vibe allows users to send any-to-many open messages, much in the same way as Twitter. The major difference is that all Vibe messages are posted anonymously, and can be set to self-destruct after a set period of time, from 15 minutes to never - helping protestors to avoid their communications being intercepted by the authorities.

Vibe messages are also able be distributed only to users within a certain range, from a few metres away to globally.

Vibe, which is available for free on iOS for Apple iPhone and iPad and Google Android devices, has now become the messaging service of choice for Occupy Wall Street protestors - a fact that is actively encouraged by developer Hazem Sayed, who flew from California to the New York protest to deliver leaflets explaining how to use the app.

Activist Drew Hornbein, a member of Occupy Wall Street's Internet Committee, explained the app's importance to the NY Daily News:

"Let's say you're protesting and someone up ahead sees that the cops are getting ready to kettle people, they can send out this vibe that only lasts a few minutes that says, 'Cops are kettling'.

"It's anonymous too, so not only are you able to send out relevant information to a small radius, but it also disappears, there's no record of it, so no one can come after the person who sent it."
