It's because Stormfront *loves* Ron Paul, and that means he's being set up by Je-, er, Zionists who are out to destroy him.

But by all means, keep voting, keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I mean why not? Fuck it.

I hate to agree, but deep down, I do. The corruption is blatant on so many levels you don't need extravagant conspiracy theories to see that a vote for either party is a vote for the status quo.

That being said, I doubt there are very many Republicans telling their constituencies to stay away from the polls. That is a serious imbalance, but it seems to be the truth.

The fact is progressives don't have any representation in American politics. We have right and far right. It sucks. I have never heard any Dem candidate get up and tell it like it is.

For the "fairness doctrine": (I know Republicans don't like fairness)

in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king,

and ron paul is one-eyed,

personally i could never vote for a racist,

i remember reading senator byrds anti iraq war speech and thinking 'what a dude', and then later reading some of the fucking racist shitty things he'd been involved with and thinking, bummer

in australia we have an up coming election where the left is trying to be hopeful and optimistic about the labour man rudd beating the fascist john howard,
but it requires the same blindness,
because the truth is rudd is just as grey and conservative and fascist as howard,

but we've been down so goddam long that it looks like up

sad isnt it

Yes indeed, and that's why Paul looks so appealing to so many, especially since some of his ideas are so extremely radical. People want radical change, especially after BushCo.

And, yes Masonic, let me just agree again with your postings about voting -- doing so is giving legitimacy to the mafia, plain and simple. I've only come to this conclusion since the 2004 election, and that's knowing a lot of shit that most people don't know (thank you, RI) -- and, it still took me awhile to get it. The act of voting is such a deeply entrenched duty, and what we've wanted to believe was the cornerstone of democracy. Realizing that we have no democracy is the hard part for most.

Wow.

Reading all of these passionate pro-RP/anti-RP postings, I have only one question:

If we had another (engineered or not) economic crisis of the proportions of the Great Depression of the 1930s...

...how obvious is it that another FDR wouldn't stand a chance?

Maybe it's not so obvious to all that a New Deal Government is better than a No Deal Government? (Or worse than No Deal, if you ask the Katrina survivors?)

P.S. Wondering what all of you sane Canadians and Northern European Socialists think of this topic (or any of its tangents)?

There was a comment on the blog a while ago, suggesting Americans ought to put aside political differences to unite behind Paul because of his integrity. I replied that the extremist right has often found cross-over appeal to the middle and even the left by playing the integrity card and downplaying "mere politics." Paul's convictions and vision for government are not trifling things. I don't know why American progressives would consider abandoning their own beliefs in order to support him, unless they don't know what he believes, or what they believe themselves.

Something that's often forgotten is that fascism is also a populist movement.

From this European's eyes the US seems a funny place when a big girly scream can pretty much media event of the year and yet accepting responsibility for repugnant racist remarks doesn't seem to be a problem...

Beyond that, I think the whole libertarian thing is just dandy in theory but in reality survival of the fittest is for animals, not a civilised people...

Thanks,

I'm totally down with the Suicide Girls take on RP. RP's crossover popularity strikes me as just a symptom of the desperation in the US electorate.

And nothing sums up that desperation like Citizen Kang, from one of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror trilogies...

As a Canadian, if I had my pick, I'd put Mike Gravel in office. His foreign policy is similar to RP's on the face of it, but he actually seems to have the depth of knowledge to wind his way through the minefield, whereas RP sounds like someone who read up on foreign policy issues just to find the right buzzwords to appeal to the 'anti-war left', and is more informed by a ridged ideology than actual, well, history.

Though I'm no huge fan of Barack Obama, I think that if he were President, and Gravel was Veep (and had even 1 tenth the influence over Obama that Cheney does the current presidency), it could be a good combination.
