In "Learned Optimism", he recounted an experiment where optimists and pessimists were put in a room with a light switch. They had varying degress of control over the lighting in the room, but did not know how much. [this is from memory, so please confirm the details]
Optimists invariably believed they had more control over the switch than they actually had. Pessimists, on the other hand, reported accurately the precise amount of control they actually had.
Seligman's verdict was something like 'Optimists live longer, have better career success, and are happier and healthier than pessimists. The only area where pessimism is prefereable to optimism is in grasping reality'.
I thought that was fairly telling.
