Quite right. How did I mix them up? Oh. They look very similar being symmetrical. And a child could do the same thing.

But if they WERE octogons, then parents would be much more likely to notice them as Stop signs and wonder why, right?

But pentagons are what they are. A unique and unmistakable shape.
No "ordered retreat from war metaphor" there.

And there's lots of negative framing of 'home' in tricky ways in psyops media because that's a secondary attitude supporting the primary one, recruiting.

nonsense. so now evidence that you were wrong can be reinterpreted as evidence that you were right?

i thought going home was the goal of baseball?

have i been playing it wrong all these years?

misleading and/or inaccurate headline.

The 47 men, aged 18-23, were all American Football players who previously played at the high school (secondary school) level but had failed to be picked for their university's team and were now cheerleaders instead.

Male cheerleaders? I didn't even realise there was such a thing.

OK, I take it back, without reservation. American 'Football' is so totally not gay.

i never said it was not an homoerotic sport. this doesn't make it unique though, as many contact sports involve men pushing other men onto the ground.

i just thought it was misleading in an obvious sort of way.

(intentionally provocative)

it should have said that "a study of former high-school American Football players who went on to become cheerleaders has found that more than a third said they had had sexual relations with other men".

which is not nearly as shocking, really.

male cheerleaders are awesome, btw. best way for non-players to meet female cheerleaders.

....

not as misleading as the suggestions of a causal relationship between depictions of violence and actual violence, but more obviously so.

the evidence against such a causal relationship goes back quite a ways, much moreso than modern neuroscience (which, as a student of, i have the highest respect for, and hate to see it oversimplified as Hugh does constantly).

I'd submit Kublai Khan as evidence for your consideration.

(or Mongke or Genghis, to a lesser extent)

ARGGGGGGGHHHH WOW!!!!!! How did I miss the most spectacularly tragicomic line Hugh ever came up with!! Haha SHAPES. Wow. They look very similar being SHAPES. God and I thought your occasional forays into assigning very specific significance to primary colours and individual letters was dumb and crazy as you could get. Guess I was wrong.

And not even the SAME geometric shape?! How similar is close enough Hugh? Every octagon is a subliminal pentagon suuuuure but how far do you take it? A square? A triangle? a line? a dot?

Wow talk about the on-topic analogy of MOVING THE GOALPOSTS

Hoorah. Let's have it a few more times, it really cracks me up:

Hugh don't worry so much, no child is as dumb or visually illiterate as you are so they'll be OK.

Arthur Miller went round to his friend's house one time as a youngster, and walked into the basement (who came up with the idea of hanging out in basements?) only to find the entire high school football team furiously tugging each other off. Apparently by established tradition. In 1930 or something. I read it in a book.

It didn't say whether he joined in or told them all to stop it. Should've told them all to stop the football and concentrate on the group masturbation, imo. More worthwhile. Better exercise, and no stoppages.

American Football is in no way gay, though, as these men have scientifically proven:

A psychoanalytic Consideration of American Football
by (the now sadly late) Alan Dundes

http://www.jstor.org.ezproxy.library.dr ... 499315.pdf

I believe that a useful way to begin an attempt to understand the
psychoanalytic significance of American football is through an ex-
amination of football folk speech. For it is precisely in the idioms
and metaphors that a clear pattern of personal interaction is re-
vealed. In this regard, it might be helpful first to briefly consider
the slang employed in the verbal dueling of the American male. In
effect, I am suggesting that American football is analogous to male
verbal dueling. Football entails ritual and dramatic action while
verbal dueling is more concerned with words. But structurally
speaking, they are similar or at least functionally equivalent. In
verbal dueling, it is common to speak about putting one's opponent
"down." This could mean simply to topple an opponent figura-
tively, but it could also imply forcing one's adversary to assume a
supine position, that is, the "female" position in typical Western
sexual intercourse. It should also be noted that an equally hu-
miliating experience for a male would be to serve as a passive re-
ceptacle for a male aggressor's phallic thrust. Numerous idioms at-
test to the widespread popularity of this pattern of imagery to de-
scribe a loser. One speaks of having been screwed by one's boss or
of having been given the shaft. Submitting to anal intercourse is
also implied in perhaps the most common single American folk
gesture, the so-called digitus impudicus, better known in folk
parlance as the "finger." Giving someone the finger is often ac-
companied by such unambiguous explanatory phrases as "Fuck
you!," "Screw you!," "Up yours!," or "Up your ass!."
