Milwaukee archdiocese to release sex abuse files
Apr 3, 2013 |

Prevailing modern wisdom has been that an American — or a citizen of any superpower — could not be elected pope. Many Vatican watchers still think that's true, but others say that Dolan, a Ballwin native, may represent the first real prospect of an American pontificate. / AP

MILWAUKEE — The Archdiocese of Milwaukee said Wednesday it will release thousands of pages of documents tied to sexual abuse lawsuits, including depositions with some former top officials.

The archdiocese, which had been fighting the documents’ release, made its announcement the day before the matter was to be decided in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Milwaukee. The archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2011 to deal with about 500 sex abuse claims. Lawyers representing the men and women who filed the claims had been seeking the documents’ release.

The documents include depositions by New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who previously led the Milwaukee archdiocese, as well as by former Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert Weakland and retired Bishop Richard Sklba. Victims’ advocates have accused archdiocese leaders of transferring abusive priests to other parishes and concealing their crimes for decades.

Jerry Topczewski, the chief of staff for current Archbishop Jerome Listecki, said the archdiocese will post the documents on its website by July 1. The documents will also include items from priests’ personnel files and the files of bishops and other church leaders.

Topczewski said officials need time to ensure the identities of sexual-abuse victims are fully redacted. The archdiocese also plans to post timelines to provide some context for the documents.

“I think what the archbishop has done is say, ‘If this is what’s needed for resolution, if this is going to help abuse survivors, then I’ll authorize their release without the court being involved,’” Topczewski said.

Dolan, who led Milwaukee’s Roman Catholics from 2002 to 2009, gave a deposition in February in which his attorney said he had answered questions about his decision to publicize the names of clergy members who’d been accused of molesting children in mostly decades-old cases.

“As I stated at the time of the deposition, I was grateful for the opportunity to go on-the-record with a full account of how the Archdiocese of Milwaukee responded to abuse survivors, and to answer any questions that I could,” Dolan said in a statement Wednesday. “I stand ready to assist in any way that I can in the future.”

Plaintiffs’ attorney Jeff Anderson said the archdiocese’s decision marks a “giant step” toward helping the survivors heal. He said the next steps will involve resolving financial claims with the archdiocese’s insurance companies.

“The survivors’ priority was the document disclosure,” Anderson said. “Now that this is achieved we can now pursue with vigor the archdiocese’s insurance companies, who have been a major impediment to resolution.”

One Milwaukee plaintiff told The Associated Press that even though he was glad the documents would be revealed, he wasn’t eager to read them himself.

“I think it’s good for the general population because then other people can get a glimpse,” said Billy Kirchen. Now 46, Kirchen says his choir director at a Milwaukee parish assaulted him for five years beginning in the 1970s when he was about 11. “I’ll probably read it at some point, but it’ll probably be an affirmation of what I already believed was going on: secrecy, untruths, cover-ups.”

The AP generally doesn’t identify people who say they were victims of sexual abuse, but Kirchen gave permission to use his name.

Milwaukee is the eighth U.S. diocese to seek bankruptcy protection over abuse claims. Advocates for victims have accused Milwaukee church officials of trying to shield its assets, in part by transferring millions of dollars several years ago into a cemetery trust fund and a parish fund.

Some of the documents to be released go back as far as 80 years, the archdiocese said in a statement. The papers will show that church leaders often didn’t know about abuse until years after it happened, in many cases because victims didn’t report the crimes to church or public authorities until decades later, the statement said.

The documents also detail how priests who were accused of abuse in the 1970s and ‘80s were often removed from their parishes for medical reasons, sent for counseling and then reassigned to other parishes with the recommendation of their medical professionals. The diocese said the documents will show that most priests who were reassigned did not abuse again, although some did.

Other documents show that police, church and other authorities did not always investigate abuse claims and that priests who were convicted did not always receive jail sentences, the archdiocese said.

Sklba took over as head of the archdiocese after Weakland abruptly retired in 2002 after news broke that Weakland had secretly reached a $450,000 settlement with a man who said Weakland sexually assaulted him in 1979.

“I welcome the release of my deposition transcripts and of these documents as a way to further get out the truth of what happened - and what didn’t happen - during the many years the Church has been dealing with this issue,” Sklba said in a statement.

War College Army colonel arrested for child porn possession
April 04, 2013 3:38 pm
By Tammie Gitt and Naomi Creason, The Sentinel

A colonel at the U.S. Army War College is in Cumberland County Prison after he was arrested Thursday on 120 counts of possession of child pornography.

Col. Robert Joel Rice, 55, whose last known address is a motel in Middlesex Township, faces 120 counts of child pornography charges after court documents say more than 10,000 files of suspected child pornography were found on Rice’s laptop. Rice is the director of the DA Support Branch at the Center for Strategic Leadership at the U.S. Army War College.

Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed said the charges stem over a couple months of investigation.

“That’s the time it takes to do a detailed forensic analysis (of the computer),” Freed said.

The affidavit of probable cause said Rice’s wife, Marilyn Barbara Rice-Goldie, was interviewed on Feb. 7 when she told the District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division that she saw child pornography on Rice’s laptop computer. She turned the laptop into the Silver Spring Township Police Department, which was then turned over to the district attorney’s office, the affidavit said.

That same day, a search warrant was obtained to conduct a forensic analysis of the laptop. Upper Allen Township Police Det. Ryan Parthemore conducted the forensic analysis and was able to identify, without question, 120 files as being child pornography, court documents said.

The affidavit noted the laptop’s file system contained more than 10,000 images depicting children under the age of 18, engaging in prohibited sexual acts. Because of the large number of files on the computer, only 120 images were subjected to detailed analysis, court documents said.

Of the 120 images, 70 were discovered within the Yahoo! Messenger folder structure, with date/time stamps indicating the images were stored between April 27, 2010 and Dec. 22, 2010, the affidavit said. The images were not deleted and were still accessible through the user account.

The remaining 50 images were discovered in the Windows thumbcache — a database of images created by the Windows operating system, court documents said. The purpose of the cache is to generate smaller previews of various file formats when the folder is set to display in the icon view mode. Through this, the images were present on the computer and recovered during forensic analysis, the affidavit said.

After the investigation, Freed said Rice was arrested Thursday. The Army Criminal Investigation Command arrested Rice when he was on post, according to a statement posted on the Army War College Facebook by Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo.

Cucolo added the War College is taking the allegations seriously.

“The allegations, if true, are very serious,” he said in the statement. “The command is cooperating with the Cumberland County district attorney’s office. He is innocent until proven guilty, and he and his family will receive appropriate support. Meanwhile, his clearance has been suspended and his duties here, pending adjudication, will be with projects that do not entail access to classified information.”

Aware the allegations would draw public attention and could reflect negatively on those at the post, Cucolo wrote: “I will take every opportunity to tell folks I am very proud to serve with a group of magnificent professionals — you — who live the values of our profession, on- and off-duty, 24/7. Let’s think of Col. Rice’s family as we continue to give full support to local law enforcement officials as they conduct their investigation.”

Rice had his preliminary arraignment in front of Magisterial District Judge Elizabeth Beckley Thursday, where she set the bail at $100,000 monetary. He remains in Cumberland County Prison unable to post bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, before Magisterial District Judge Paula P. Correal.

'Cadillac Ranch' sponsor Stanley Marsh 3 indicted on sexual assault charges

Stanley Marsh 3, seen here at a 30th anniversary celebration for his Cadillac Ranch -- a row of 10 brightly painted Cadillacs planted nose-down in a field -- has been charged with 11 counts of child molestation.

‘Cadillac Ranch’ patron Stanley Marsh 3 charged with 11 counts of child molestation
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) -- A Texas grand jury has indicted eccentric millionaire artist Stanley Marsh 3 on charges that he sexually assaulted two teenagers, according to documents released Thursday.
Marsh was indicted Wednesday on four counts of sexual assault of a child, eight counts of sexual performance by a child, and two counts of indecency with a child.
Marsh, the son of an oil tycoon, faces up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000 on each count. His attorneys have denied the allegations.
The allegations date to before Marsh suffered a massive stroke in 2011. His wife is now his legal guardian.
Marsh, who is probably best known for sponsoring the pop art landmark "Cadillac Ranch" in the early 1970s, settled civil lawsuits in February involving 10 teenagers who alleged he paid them for sex.
Marsh has been free on bond since he turned himself in on a November arrest warrant for six counts of child sexual assault and five counts of sexual performance of a child. Those allegations involved a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old.
A statement from his lawyers then noted the accusers had filed civil suits "seeking millions of dollars" and that they had waited to come forward until after Marsh's stroke.
"Cadillac Ranch" along Interstate 40 near Amarillo features 10 Cadillacs buried nose down. The cars, including a 1948 club coupe and a 1963 sedan, were gathered from junkyards, private collectors and used car lots. Visitors over the years have splattered them with graffiti, and in 2005 they were coated in pink to honor breast cancer victims, survivors and their families.
Marsh, who uses the Arabic numeral `3' in his legal name, also has painted them black and yellow to honor the passing of longtime friends.
This is not the first time Marsh has been accused of sexual misconduct. In 2001, four lawsuits against Marsh that alleged imprisonment, sexual misconduct and harassment of teens were settled. No other details were made public.
In 1998, Marsh pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of unlawful restraint and criminal trespassing as part of an agreement that dismissed five felony charges including kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and indecency with a child. He served 10 days in jail and paid $4,000 in fines.
In 1996, Marsh settled a lawsuit with a youth who claimed Marsh sexually abused him.
In the latest case, Lubbock County District Attorney Matt Powell was appointed special prosecutor after the district attorney for Potter County recused himself. Powell has said the settlement in the civil cases won't affect the criminal prosecution.
The civil suits alleged Marsh gave teenage boys cash, alcohol, drugs and in one case, two BMWs, to perform sex acts with him during secret encounters at his office. In one of the civil cases, a teenager claimed he had more than 100 sexual encounters with Marsh in his office and Toad Hall home in Amarillo.
Amarillo police say that they found evidence in Marsh's downtown offices that corroborated "the accounts of sexual exploitation of minors." Police seized computers, couch cushion covers, a photo of a nude male and signed confidentiality agreements, among other things, according to a search warrant inventory report.

Catholic religious order abuse files may go public

GILLIAN FLACCUS | April 16, 2013 03:35 AM EST |

LOS ANGELES — Less than three months after the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles released the files of priests accused of sex abuse, attorneys for alleged victims are back in court seeking similar records kept by more than a dozen religious orders.

A hearing Tuesday will begin the process of determining if – and in what form – the records kept by religious orders such as the Jesuits, Vincentians, Salesians and Dominicans, among others, will be made public.

The continued legal battle comes after the Los Angeles archdiocese unsealed under court order the files it kept over the years on 120 of its priests who have been accused of sex abuse in civil lawsuits. The church agreed as part of a $660 million settlement to release the documents, but attorneys for individual priests fought for five years to keep them under wraps, citing privacy issues.

A number of religious orders signed off on the settlement agreement and contributed significant amounts to it because up to one-third of the accused priests belonged to religious orders, said J. Michael Hennigan, an archdiocese attorney representing the interests of the orders at the hearing.

Those orders assigned priests to work in the archdiocese but are separate entities with their own hierarchy and disciplinary processes, he said.

Ray Boucher, a coordinating attorney for the plaintiffs, said the records kept on accused priests by the religious orders are critical to understanding the scope of the sex abuse scandal and the internal dynamics that contributed to it.

In many instances, the archdiocese file on a religious order priest is empty or one-sided and missing records that would show whether the order already knew of the priest's behavior and how they ultimately handled him, he said.

Some of the orders have also reached separate settlements with alleged victims, including the Franciscans.

Franciscan files released last year revealed a pervasive culture of abuse over generations at a Santa Barbara seminary dedicated to training future Franciscans. The file included a rarely seen "sexual history" written by one priest for a therapy session that detailed how he formed a boys' choir and selected his victims from among its ranks.

"These orders ... have really flown under the radar," Boucher said.

Religious orders whose files will be discussed at the hearing include small groups such as the Piarist Fathers and larger, more well-known organizations such as the Jesuits and Dominicans.

Max Clifford charged with 11 counts of indecent assault
Charges against celebrity publicist refer to offences allegedly committed between 1966 and 1985

Max Clifford, the celebrity publicist who made his name and fortune helping some of Britain's most famous people shape their reputations, has been charged with 11 indecent assaults of girls and young women, including one of a girl aged 14.

The charges related to offences allegedly committed between 1966 and 1985 and were laid in the course of Operation Yewtree, the police investigation which was set up in the wake of revelation of the sexual offences carried out by Jimmy Savile.

On Friday evening, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that it had authorised police to charge Clifford, who was arrested at his home in Surrey in December on suspicion of sexual offences. He has consistently denied the allegations against him. On Friday night he said the charges were "completely false" and vowed to clear his name in a court of law.

Alison Saunders, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London, said: "We have carefully considered the evidence gathered as part of Operation Yewtree in relation to Max Clifford, who was initially arrested on 6 December 2012 over allegations of sexual offences.

"Having completed our review, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Clifford to be charged with 11 offences of indecent assault relating to seven complainants.

"We have also decided that there is insufficient evidence to authorise charges in relation to three separate allegations. These decisions were taken in accordance with the code for crown prosecutors and our guidance for prosecutors on sexual offences.

Clifford is to appear at Westminster magistrates court on 28 May. Indecent assault is punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment upon conviction in the crown court.

"Anyone who really knew me all those years ago, and those who have known me since will, I'm sure, have absolutely no doubt that I would never act in the way that I have today been accused," he told Reuters in December.

As part of Operation Yewtree, police have been looking into categories of alleged offences: those involving only Savile, those involving Savile and others, and those which had no direct link to Savile. Clifford's arrest was understood to have been part of the third strand.

The charges include one offence of indecent assault against a girl, aged 14, in 1966, as well as a charge of indecent assault against an 18-year-old women in 1974/75. Three other charges of indecent assault related to a 15-year-old girl were allegedly committed in 1977/78 while another offence of indecent assault against a 19-year-old woman was allegedly committed in 1978.

The remaining charges related to two offences of indecent assault against a girl, aged 16 or 17, in 1981/82, an offence of indecent assault against a 19-year-old woman in 1980/81 and two offences of indecent assault against an 18-year-old woman in 1984/85.

Clifford, who has become a household name in his own right for selling "kiss and tell" stories relating to the rich and famous, has wielded major influence on Fleet Street for decades.

After training as a journalist, he moved into what was then the emerging sector of press relations, starting out at EMI, where he was involved in early publicity for the Beatles.

His own company, Max Clifford Associates, was established while he was in his 20s and has gone on to represent figures ranging from Frank Sinatra through to Muhammed Ali and, in recent times, Jade Goody and Simon Cowell.

In the course of acting for another client in the 1980s, Clifford is credited with inventing the story that led to the cult Sun headline "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster".

NYC: Too late to prosecute prep school abuse case
5:32 p.m. EDT April 26, 2013
Prosecutors say a pattern of sexual abuse simmered at a NYC prep school for 30 years.

NEW YORK (AP) — A systemic pattern of suspected sexual abuse existed at an elite New York City prep school from the 1970s until the mid-1990s, but the statute of limitations to prosecute them has expired, prosecutors said Friday.

The Bronx district attorney's office and the New York Police Department launched an investigation into allegations of abuse at The Horace Mann School after a New York Times Magazine article last summer that said the academy was plagued by teachers who sexually abused children in the 1970s.

A hotline was set up for victims, and more than 30 calls came in mostly in the first few months after the June report, prosecutors. More than 60 interviews were done, with investigators traveling to California, Colorado and Vermont to speak to people about allegations of abuse. During their 10-month investigation, they identified more than 25 victims and more than 12 suspected abusers.

Horace Mann is one of New York City's most prestigious private schools — and one of the most expensive, with an annual tuition of $39,100. Its alumni include media mogul Samuel Newhouse, O.J. Simpson lawyer Barry Scheck and Food Network chef Alex Guarnaschelli.

The Times article was written by Amos Kamil, a 1982 Horace Mann graduate. In it, former students — mostly identified only by letters in their names — accused at least three now-deceased teachers of repeatedly molesting them and other pupils. They described an atmosphere at the tony school where the social lines between teachers and students were routinely blurred and then taken advantage of by pedophiles.

Attorney Gloria Allred, who said she represents 25 former students — three women and 22 men — who are alleging they were abused, didn't immediately return a message Friday seeking comment. She previously said most of the former students have reached settlements with the school.

Prosecutors said Friday that they found a pattern of abuse that went even further than what was alleged in the article. They said they found instances of abuse from the 1970s up until 1996.

But to date, all the instances of reported sexual abuse occurring between 1962 and 1996 are beyond the state's statute of limitations, which for all felonies is five years and for misdemeanors is two years. The statute of limitations for child sex crimes is more forgiving but has still passed, prosecutors said.

School officials didn't immediately return a call for comment on Friday.

North Wales child abuse inquiry records 140 claims
(AFP) – 6 hours ago
An inquiry into historic child sex abuse cases in North Wales care homes has uncovered evidence of "systematic and serious sexual and physical abuse".
Investigators have recorded 140 allegations relating to alleged offences across 18 care homes between 1963 and 1992, since the launch of Operation Pallial last November.
The report on the first phase of the inquiry said 76 new complainants had come forward.
Complainants named a total of 84 people as suspects, 75 of whom are male and nine female -- though some of these may no longer be alive.
The alleged victims were boys and girls aged between seven and 19.
"These are serious allegations that will be thoroughly investigated," said Detective Superintendent Ian Mulcahey, of Merseyside Police, the senior investigating officer for the inquiry.
"Many have provided graphic accounts of abuse, in some cases of very serious criminality."
He said detectives would focus their ongoing inquiries on individuals who pose the greatest risk to the public as a matter of priority.
The operation is being run in conjunction with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), overseen by the National Crime Agency.
Soca said one man had been arrested in connection with the investigation. He was detained in Ipswich, Suffolk, last Tuesday on suspicion of "a number of serious sexual offences against a number of individuals" and was bailed pending further inquiries.
Operation Pallial was set up under the orders of Home Secretary Theresa May to re-examine claims of sex crimes and review the original police investigations into abuse at North Wales care homes.
North Wales Chief Constable Mark Polin said it was "never too late" to report abuse and urged any other victims to come forward.
"People who commit serious and sexual offences should live with the knowledge that we will always examine new information and evidence and seek to bring them to justice for their crimes," he said.
"Offenders should quite rightly have to look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives."

Last night on local news I saw a clip of the arraignment of an alleged serial pedophile.
Now, granted, presumed innocent, etc. He might have just been innocent. Possible.
Also, he might well be a psychopath with a broken or non-existent conscience.
But here's one thing, for sure, which troubled me: He did not look nervous.
When accused pedophiles are arraigned in a court and aren't nervous...
Isn't that a sign that there's something the rest of us should be nervous about?
Why wouldn't someone arraigned on that be nervous, despondent, shell-shocked?
One reason could be that the accused knows someone has his back, is in no danger.
Another reason is that the criminal penalties for sexual abuse are relatively soft?

Three Cleveland girls who vanished a decade ago found alive

May 6, 2013 5:43 PM |

2 women, missing for a decade, found alive in Ohio: Cleveland police say two women who went missing as teenagers about a decade ago have been found alive in a residential area about 2 miles south of downtown.
Written by
WKYC

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Police say they've discovered Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus and a third woman named Michelle Knight, all of whom have been missing for years.

According to Cleveland Police, the women were being kept in a house in the 2200 block of Seymour Avenue near West 25th Street.

The women identified themselves as Amanda Berry, now 27, and Gina DeJesus, now 23, and Berry was holding a baby. Police have not released any more information at this time.

WKYC confirmed they were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and friends and family have gathered outside MetroHealth.

Amanda was last seen at approximately 7:45 p.m. on April 21, 2003, near West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue wearing a Burger King uniform and a black apron with "Burger King" written on it in yellow letters.

Her mother, Louwanna Miller, passed away in March of 2006.

DeJesus, then 14, disappeared April 2, 2004, while walking home from school in the same area. Since then, Berry and DeJesus have been the subject of numerous vigils.

Police confirmed that the man, Ariel Castro, 52, who was in the house was taken into custody and they will hold a press conference Tuesday morning.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said, "I am thankful that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have been found alive. We have many unanswered questions regarding this case and the investigation will be ongoing. Again, I am thankful that these three young ladies are found and alive."

AUDIO: Amanda Berry's frantic 911 call

(Cleveland) - "I'm here. I'm free now!"

Amanda Berry escaped her captor's home Monday and called 9-1-1. She told the operator she was being held on Cleveland's west side by 52-year-old Ariel Castro.

The Cleveland law Department released recordings of the call.

A frantic Berry tells the dispatcher who she is and that she's been in the news the last ten years. When asked what her captor was wearing when he left, Berry says, "I don't know 'cause he's not here right now. It's how I got away!"

Cleveland Police found them in a home at 2210 Seymour Ave. A huge crowd of people gathered quickly as word got out.

Berry has been missing since 2003 and DeJesus since 2004. Knight, now 32, has been missing since 2002. She would have already been an adult when she disappeared.

All three have been taken to MetroHealth for examination.

On Monday night neighbors crowded around Seymour Avenue which had been blocked by Cleveland Police and FBI agents. There was a sense of relief Monday night. "I prayed for a miracle, and today we have a miracle" said Connie, who had lived a couple streets down from 2210 Seymour for 20 years.

Another neighbor organized vigils for Gina and Amanda for the past 10 years, and said she was overcome with joy and sorrow that Amanda's mother, Louwana, who passed away from illness several years ago didn't get a chance to know her daughter was alive.

According to sources, Berry called 911 Monday afternoon. She also told the 911 dispatcher that Gina DeJesus is with her. Witnesses tell WTAM news Berry escaped to a neighbor's house Monday night. The neighbor went back in the home they were held captive and rescued the three missing girls and four children.

A 52-year-old man has been detained and police say they will hold a press conference Tuesday morning. Sources tell Newsradio WTAM 1100 that his name is Ariel Castro.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

WORCESTER MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SOLICITATION TO KIDNAP A CHILD; DUNGEON DISCUSSED IN ONLINE CHATS DISCOVERED IN DEFENDANT'S BASEMENT
BYLINE: States News Service
LENGTH: 1134 words
DATELINE: BOSTON, MA

The following information was released by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts:

Geoffrey Portway, 40, a citizen of the United Kingdom and most recently of Worcester, Mass., pleaded guilty today to solicitation to commit a crime of violence (kidnaping of a child) and distribution and possession of child pornography.

According to the agreed upon statement of facts, Portway engaged in numerous chats with many individuals about a mutual interest in abducting, raping, murdering, and eating children. Many of these conversations were accompanied by the trading of child pornography. These chats also included images of children known to them, accompanied by discussions of the desire to sexually abuse, murder and cannibalize those children.

As stated both in court filings and at the hearing today, through his online chats, Portway solicited several people for their help in abducting a child, predominately from Michael Arnett of Kansas. At least as early as 2010, Portway utilized Skype and other programs to communicate with Arnett, trading child pornography including images of injured, mutilated and deceased children while chatting about the sexual abuse, rape, abduction, murder, and cannibalism of children. Over months, Portway repeatedly solicited Arnett to kidnap a child for him, with the intent that Portway would ultimately rape, kill and eat that child. These solicitations for help abducting a child included discussing real children, by name and photo, that Arnett claimed to know and have access. In the chats, Portway and Arnett discuss different ways to kidnap children and the age range that Portway prefers. During the time that Portway was soliciting Arnett, Portway had been told that Arnett had helped others with such requests before and that Arnett had experience with the abduction and sexual abuse of children. Arnett has since pleaded guilty in Kansas to the sexual exploitation of a child for the purposes of producing child pornography.

On July 27, 2012, federal agents along with state and local police, executed a federal search warrant at Portway's residence in Worcester. Various computers and digital devices containing Portway's child pornography collection were seized, in addition to the computer he used to trade child photography and attempt to plan the abduction of a child.

During the execution of the search warrant, agents also discovered a locked door in the basement of the residence. Inside the door was a sally port that led to a second door (with a keyed lock). Inside the second door was a dungeon, which was lined with acoustical sound-deadening material and contained a chair, television, and what appeared to be cable access to the Internet. The room also contained a child-sized homemade coffin (with large speakers covered in wire mesh at one end) with exterior locking devices, a steel cage (approximately 3' wide, 2' high and 4' long) with multiple locking devices, and a steel table top (with steel rings at six points, presumably for restraints). Outside these rooms were a cabinet freezer, an upright freezer, disposable scalpels, butchering kits, and castration tools. This dungeon was described in detail by Portway in recovered chats as a place he intended to use to keep kidnaped children while he sexually abused them and as a place to eventually murder and cannibalize the children.

A forensic examination of the computers uncovered evidence of over 4,500 trades of child pornography between Portway and others. Many of these trades involved Portway distributing child pornography to others based on their stated specific preferences, including images and videos appearing to depict dead children and the cannibalism of children.

"Clearly, the facts of this case were quite disturbing and we are grateful law enforcement acted when they did," said United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz. "I hope that this case sends a clear message that we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who participate in these types of activities. Even though criminals attempt to hide in the anonymity provided by the Internet, the Department of Justice is committed to aggressively pursuing them to ensure that there is no place to hide."

"An investigation that began in Milford in 2010 - expanded to Europe and beyond - has returned back to where it originally started: the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," said Bruce M. Foucart, special agent in charge of HSI Boston. "Since we began this operation - Operation Holitna - a worldwide network of offenders has been, and continues to be, unraveled, including Portway. Thanks to the determination of HSI, along with our partners at the U.S. attorney's office, we have been able to rescue 160 children and arrest 51 perpetrators worldwide - all as a result of the arrest of a Milford man, and subsequent advanced forensics of his digital media. Portway's guilty plea should serve as a stern warning to those inclined to abuse children or share images of child pornography: there isn't a place in the United States, on the Internet, or the planet in which you are truly safe. We will investigate you, we will prosecute you and we will bring you to justice."

Under the terms of the plea agreement, the Court must sentence Portway to between 216 and 327 months in prison, a lifetime supervised release, restitution and forfeiture. He will also be required to register as a Level 3 sex offender. Additionally, Portway is to be deported after serving his sentence.

US Attorney Ortiz; SAC Foucart; Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early; Colonel Timothy Alben, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police; and Chief Gary J. Gemme of the Worcester Police Department made the announcement today. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacy Dawson Belf of Ortiz's Major Crimes Unit.

If you have any information related to this investigation please call 617-748-3274.

Today's guilty plea is part of Operation Holitna, an ongoing HSI-led investigation that originated in Boston. In 2010, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts and HSI Boston arrested Robert Diduca on child pornography production charges. He was convicted and subsequently sentenced in June 2012. Forensic analysis of Diduca's computer led investigators to the Netherlands where a Dutch national was arrested and charged with production, distribution and possession of child pornography, as well as the sexual assault of 87 minors. Since that time, a worldwide network of offenders has been, and continues to be, unraveled, including today's defendant. Defendants and victims continue to be identified around the world. To date, more than 160 children have been rescued and 51 perpetrators arrested worldwide - including Portway - as a result of Operation Holitna.

^ Thanks for posting that. I will cross-post if you don't mind. I hope she gets compassionate, competent care to help her process the trauma.

That she suddenly seizes up in the midst of her narrative suggests she is abreacting electroshock. It looks to me like she's accessing memories that someone attempted to train her not to access, and so she's intermittently getting a jolt of punishment as she accesses them. Of course she is not wired up here, it's a conditioned response. Caveats about remote diagnoses apply of course, but until I undid a lot of my conditioning, that is exactly what it was like for me. My whole body would react as if it were being shocked when I was trying to tell someone what happened. I still get those phantom shocks sometimes.
