Heh, that's witty 4B. Interesting that this happened not only on the same day as the much-vaunted 28-page release but just as the USA and Russia were tentatively agreeing to collaborate against IS and Jabhat al-Nusra (or so they said).

Re: Let's talk Turkey
So is the coup over?! I keep finding videos on twitter and elsewhere of military members being surrounded by unarmed civilians, who then escort the military out of buildings and even out of their own tanks! It's like the military didn't want to shoot anyone and didn't know what to do when crowds came out to block their way. Here's a periscope video of a tank crew being talked out of their tank by civilians and led away by the police.
https://www.periscope.tv/w/1OwxWvldRNeJQ
However, I've also seen a few videos of violence; one a helicopter firing into the city (no video of people being hit) and a video of the parliament building be shaken by an explosion. Some people have died, but it looks like most of the military units in the cities just kind of gave up. It's really hard to tell right now.
Also, several Turks on reddit have said this felt like a "false flag coup" for how inept it was, and was possibly organized by Erdogan to create political capital with a victory. *shrug*

I don't know. I have read about ten articles and the situation seems a little confused. It seems Erdogon may be hiding somewhere. I saw a report that he flew to Germany and they refused to let him land but who knows right now.

Re: Let's talk Turkey
Well, I just saw another video of a tank swerving into a guardrail that was packed with civilians . . . yeah, that was nasty. People definitely died. So one video of a tank crew peacefully surrendering and one video of a tank crew smashing people (possibly accidentally). This thing is definitely real, if not confusing.
Link to second tank video - graphic - I only post it as a record of facts. Don't watch. I can remove it if its inappropriate. Its hard to know what's appropriate to document as truth or what is gratuitous

Yeah right now it's impossible to tell with any certainty what is going on. Frustrating.
I despise Erdogan so much I hope he's out. I also hope he's not replaced with something worse although that is very difficult to imagine.

Re: Let's talk Turkey
In the past, military coups have brought Turkey back towards a more secular government. People are assuming that was their aim here, but without any real communication, that'd be hard to say. I have read that Erdogan has basically used the Syrian mess as a smoke screen to kill Kurds, and has gone pretty soft on ISIS and other extremist groups around their border.

"Gone pretty soft" on ISIS? He's been their main supporter and supplier and purchaser of their stolen oil!! He basically is ISIS!! Without him there would be no ISIS!Novem5er » Sat Jul 16, 2016 12:20 am wrote:In the past, military coups have brought Turkey back towards a more secular government. Re: Let's talk Turkey
Who knows if this is accurate but its interesting. One bit of information that keeps surfacing is that it was only a small faction of the military that attempted the coup and not the whole army but who knows. That also sounds kind of dumb because a small faction that breaks off would get its ass kicked by the bigger army and the small group would know that. Might make sense though because they are not gunning people down in the streets and firing the tanks and as far as I know the jets screeching overhead creating sonic booms and knocking out windows from the boom have not fired.
I don't know who is in the jets but if it really is a small faction in the tanks it might not be coup group. Maybe they are creating the sonic booms to let the tanks know they face deep shit but who knows. Also how does a small group wrestle tanks away in defiance of the larger part of the army? Maybe they had them hid somehow. Lots of questions. It looks like the tanks are trying to retreat and get the hell out of dodge because they had a change of heart and didn't want to shoot the citizens maybe.

According to the Istanbul governor, the military coup attempt has been suppressed.
The commander of Istanbul's 3rd Corps has reportedly issued a televised order for all troops to return to barracks.
Turkey's National Intelligence Organization also claims that the coup attempt has failed. An adviser for the organization, Nuh Yilmaz, announced that General Staff Hulusi Akar, who was being held by the military, has been released.
State television channel TRT reports that 4 soldiers have been arrested for the coup attempt, including one who was high-ranked. At least 13 people were detained while attempting to capture the presidential palace in Ankara, including high-ranking members.
Roughly 30 soldiers who were part of the coup attempt have surrendered arms in Istanbul's central Taksim Square, according to witnesses. They were taken away in police vans as a fighter jet screeched repeatedly overhead, causing shockwaves that shook surrounding buildings and shattered windows.
Several servicemen have been injured and killed, according to Special Forces Command commander Major General Zekai Aksakalli.
Anadolu news agency reported earlier that 17 police officers were killed during clashes.

"A small number of servicemen supported the coup. We shall take the situation under control shortly. There are deceased and injured among our servicemen," he said as part of an NTV broadcast.

The prime minister described the attempt as an act of rebellion by followers of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gullen. The Alliance for Shared Values (AfSV), a non-profit group linked to the cleric, issued a statement condemning the attempt.

"We condemn any military intervention in [the] domestic politics of Turkey," the statement reads.
The Turkish prime minister has called on citizens to remain in the streets until the coup is completely suppressed. He claimed over 120 individuals have been arrested so far.

Looks like they might be firing from the air after all. Hit that first twitter link and look to the left at related searches and that is supposed to be a helicopter firing on the main intelligence center.

I'm glad there isn't full out civil war, but damn it's weird how they just gave up like that. There was an expert at a loss for words last night on the live Skynews stream when they first showed that clip of people all ducking together for gunfire like it was choreographed. He literally used the word "choreographed" if i remember correctly. Asked what he thought about the clip he was silent for a long time and then remarked: "that was... weird, it looks like it was choreographed".

I'm pretty sure it can be classified as emergent behaviour under heavy weapons fire.0_0 » Sat Jul 16, 2016 10:12 am wrote:I'm glad there isn't full out civil war, but damn it's weird how they just gave up like that. I must be too witty for my own good. How was what I said witty? It's a real question. Everyone here is pro-Ataturk, right? Pro-kemalist?tapitsbo » 15 Jul 2016 22:05 wrote:Heh, that's witty 4B.
