Re: What gives with the site?
This is what seems to be they want... a slow decay where people stop posting and or looking... Then poof!
Man I wish I could get an archive before it evaporates. I wish some of the cool kids here could ask Jeff to acknowledge the board or an archive. I'd be willing to pay!
I suspect Jriddler wants this space all to himself for research purposes, and is waiting on it to die, so he can have it all to himself.

Re: What gives with the site?
That reasoning seems really far-fetched.
If I had to put money on it it's either a misconfiguration, or AI bots scraping the board. There's been plenty of cases lately of smaller forums and open source projects getting DDOSed by AI scrapers ignoring robots.txt and coming back every six hours to get every last scrap. And the fuckers keep disguising their IP addresses to make it look like regular traffic, so blocking them is an endless game of whack-a-mole.

Re: What gives with the site?
FBI agents are using this site as a honey pot to attract activists/others who visit RI
Agents are the last hackers I would suspect hacking a site posting information about crimes they have committed.
The FBI's FY2025 budget request includes $13 billion for federal cybersecurity spending, a significant increase from the FY2024 budget. This funding aims to bolster national security, criminal law enforcement, and criminal justice services, including cyber investigations. The FBI specifically requests $7 million to enhance cyber investigative capabilities and $27.2 million for protecting internal networks.
Key aspects of the FBI's cybersecurity budget:
Overall Funding:
The FY2025 budget request includes $13 billion for federal cybersecurity spending, with $3 billion allocated to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
FBI-Specific Allocations:
The FBI's request includes $63.4 million for enhanced cyber information-sharing and cyber tools, and $27.2 million for protecting internal networks.
Personnel:
The request also includes funding for 192 new cybersecurity positions, including special agents, intelligence analysts, and other staff.
Cyber Investigative Capabilities:
The FBI seeks $7 million to enhance cyber investigative capabilities.
Protecting Internal Networks:
The FBI is requesting $27.2 million to help protect its own internal networks from cyber threats.
Threat Mitigation:
The budget also includes $17.8 million to mitigate threats from foreign intelligence services.

I hope Jeff doesn't mind my saying so, but hold tight everybody. PHPBB is really old tech and buggy. The issues resolve to database query code, and the system needs a major update or replacement. Talks are in progress, and improvements are planned.
I've researched the major alternative discussion board platforms. Personally, I recommend Discourse, but it isn't perfect. If any of you have a suggestion, please post it here.

I'm down for whatever, Willow. If you want to lead the charge to migrate what is left of this community over to Discourse, I will definitely make an account there.
Current site moderators offering feedback? Well, all AWOL it seems. Jeff last logged in mid April.
The obviously sad fact - not many of us around here anymore. Sound off if you are!

Re: What gives with the site?
I’d love to join a Discord with all of you.
I also received that error for a couple months but I was able to log in today because I wanted to look up some old Crowdstrike info. I was using a U.S. server on my VPN and received a notice that I’d been permanently banned. Switching to Canada (ha) obviously helped but I definitely don’t want to ruffle any feathers so I reached out to the rigorousintuition email. Not sure that’s being looked at though.
Anyway, all for Discord and watch out for those U.S. IPs.

Re: What gives with the site?
Discourse, not Discord, I hope. Discourse is open source forum software, so in theory at least you could migrate the entire archive over. Discord is a closed platform that's not searchable from outside, and we would essentially have to start from scratch. It's also heading straight for enshittification, having just gotten a new CEO (from Activision Blizzard, and before that McKinsey. Huge heaping mounds of shit practically guaranteed) in preparation for going public.

Re: What gives with the site?
I stand corrected. In that case, Discourse definitely sounds better.
