TWA 800/missile launcher on lawn/anti-missile defense on jet

A: Because acknowledging the vulnerability of America's commercial aircraft and 'crediting' terrorists with the act would've (rightly) terrified significant numbers of people right out of flying and collapsed the multi-billion dollar civil aviation industry in this country.
Q: If terrorists shot down TWA 800, why haven't they shot down other U.S. planes?
A: Because after TWA 800, they [terrorists] realized that the act would be covered up and explained away -- not so much in order to deprive them of recognition for their 'accomplishment' but for the purely greedy motives of keeping airplanes full of paying passengers. (Hence, the more drastic, undeniable spectacle of flying planes into buildings just five years later.)
So now read these three articles, and see if you don't go "hmm" just as I have done:

Irrelevant? Really? The FBI and the CIA did not think so. In 1996-1997, the two agencies climbed over the notorious "wall" to collaborate on an animation showing how a crippled 747 could climb rocket-like for 3,200 feet after its nose had been blown off. This animation was critical. The FBI needed such a scenario to silence the media and close the case.

An MD-10 cargo jet equipped with Northrop Grumman's Guardian anti-missile system took off from Los Angeles International Airport on a commercial flight Tuesday, the company said.
The FedEx flight marked the start of operational testing and evaluation of the laser system designed to defend against shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles during takeoffs and landings.

NEW YORK CITY - A New Jersey woman made what to her and her neighbors was a shocking discovery Friday morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.

Sources say that the device is an AT-4 missile launcher that is used to fire against tanks and buildings. The device was first approved by the U.S. Army in 1985 and its very powerful warheads can penetrate through more than a foot of armor.
